A few years from retirement now, and I'm beginning to think that a major expense will be dental work from reading some of these threads! I can anticipate that all my old crowns and fillings will start to go at once...

Yep, that's precisely what is happening to me. 40 years of old fillings, crowns, etc going to hell. I've elected to get all the work done this year and that includes many new porcelain crowns since some of the old teeth were just worn out. I just budgeted the same as if I were to buy a new pickup truck.

I believe W2R is going through the same exercise. Now some of the younger members here may not be saddled with the older style work that apparently has a finite lifetime and starts coming apart when you least expected it to.

Oh, Medicare doesn't cover any of the dental work, except under certain circumstances.

I did get a lot of dental work done for my husband two years before he retired. I knew it's a large item. I save my HSA for major dental work in the future. My husband did break one of his old crowns by chewing on a soft ginger candy piece. Unbelievable. 2 replacement crowns this year already.

Two hours in a dental chair, with a subsequent follow up appointment on Monday......I luvs me a root canal!

W2R: If I'd've been astute enough I'd have noticed he'd already given me a repeat of the antibiotics.......DW's getting it filled now.

Yay, you're done with it! I will have my root canal done a week from Tuesday, while you are off enjoying your travels.

And I think your dentist is great with details! He remembered that you might need some more antibiotics in Europe. It will be nice to know you have them if you need them.

Yep, I sure am. I just hope that once I get the worst of them replaced with implants (in my case), the dental work will lessen considerably for my remaining years of life. I think that is how it's supposed to work. :) I have had four implants, a bridge, 2-3 root canals, five crowns, and some cavities filled in the past couple of years, and soon I'll be having another root canal done on a tooth that will probably end up being replaced with my fifth implant.

I would imagine that whatever they are having done, will have a finite lifetime also no matter what they are being told right now. Life is never fair, even for younger people (despite the fact that sometimes it seems like they get all the breaks).

That said, my dentist told me back in 1975 that the solid gold crowns he was putting on my back molars would last as long as 15-20 years. They are only now starting to be a problem, 42 years later. So, one can luck out once in a while. BTW this was sort of a backwoods dentist in a small Mississippi town, so one never knows. He did a great job.

And it's not cheap. I am so glad that I have a lot of slack in my budget so that I don't have to worry about the cost of fixing my teeth.

My dentist was talking about that recently. He said that while they use porcelain crowns for most of their customers, many dentists insist on gold crowns for themselves because they last virtually forever.

Spent the day worrying about my pooch. :(

This morning she was very lethargic and didn't want to get out of bed nor would she eat or drink. The dog has always been very healthy and energetic, but she is now 11 years old. Earliest vet appointment I could get was 3 PM so I fretted the day away until the vet could see her. Thankfully, it appears to just be a bladder infection, so $700 and a few shots and pills later, the dog is doing much better. Fingers crossed.

Oh thank goodness, Travelover! Hope she feels better and better as those antibiotics do their thing.

Angel Flight
Flew a lung cancer patient from UCLA to his home near San Diego. Kind of exciting with low clouds and another plane on my fanny with the tower telling me to expedite my turn off the runway.

How does this work? Who picks up the tab for these flights, and can I presume they have to insure you also?

I and other volunteers pick up the tab. last year I spent almost $8,000 on Angel Flights. I also pay for my own insurance. The patients sign a hold harmless waiver before we fly them.

That's wonderful. Good for you!!

I don't like "stuff" but have let my life get cluttered with it so I've been spending my days giving away everything that I don't use and love.

This morning I put in the mail a Waterford pen and a Mont Blanc pen. Both were awards for "top sales" that I won years ago and both have the company logo on them.

I don't use them and almost gave them to Goodwill when I remembered that we have a company alumni group on Facebook. I posted that I was giving both to a good home; they were snapped up instantly. The one I'm happiest about is a retiree that had the same pen that he loved. He had it in his briefcase in his truck. Truck was broken into and the briefcase with his pen was stolen.

I'm so happy that something that had no value to me could make someone's day a little brighter and it only cost me $2.67 to mail it. :)

Today was a rainy, cold day here in Iowa. So we went to the 11:00 movie matinee of The Circle. It did not get good reviews, but it was a good way to spend a chilly day. I love the pop and popcorn.

Spent a couple hours reading reviews and watching YouTube videos of car road tests, and tackled a huge tangled mess of audio cables from one of my band's last gigs...sorted them and neatly wrapped them up with colour coded Velcro ties. It also warmed up enough in the afternoon to putter around in the garage for a while.

Today is our anniversary so we went to a restaurant at the pier to celebrate. I love the lunch menu here and the location. We all had our favorite fish dishes and a few appetizers. To top it off, we finished with a free hula pie. Simply decadent.
Afterwards, we went and watch some pro beach volleyball practice. There is a competition here next week I believe. Nice and beautiful weather. Can't ask for a better day.

A beautiful day working in the garden followed by a bottle of Pinot Noir and relaxing by the fire pit. Planted flowers, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.

Went down to the city to pick up my Jeep. While I was down there, I ordered hearing aids at Costco. I have my misgivings about hearing aids, but my hearing is getting so bad that the ability to communicate in person is a real struggle.

I got back from town just in time for it to start snowing. It will probably snow all night.

DW thinks I need a hearing aid. I know my hearing was damaged in my Air Force days, but I can understand any conversation without a lot of background noise. She had picked up this habit of speaking in a near whisper to me. I understand everyone but her. I ask her to just speak in a normal tone and I'll hear her fine, but she insists it's me. Can't win!

Any way they could make that new role 4 days a week for 80% of full-time pay? Might be a win-win. I worked for many years towards the end of my career less than full-time... in our firm everything was just a % of FTE... so my vacation pay was 80% of an FTE, etc. Only thing that was different was health insurance... that was the same for everyone from 50% to 100% and nothing for those less than 50%.

The situation would be coming in to clean up a dysfunctional mess. Can't imagine that this would be doable on 4 days a week. Might be able to wangle some work from home time, though. They have not clearly formulated positions, etc, yet so this is a slow burn.

Ran errands and did grocery shopping the morning knowing there was a big storm coming in. Resisted the temptation to muck with bees despite the 65F and sunny weather since overnight lows will be in the low 20s. Banged out a flat of trap shells at my reloading bench and then made dinner for family and MIL (quail egg quiche and Jerusalem artichokes, MIL brought salad). Now sitting in front of the fire with a glass of scotch while the snow piles up. This one will be a tree breaker.

I haven't been able to hear in a noisy environment since my stints in the Air Force and Air National Guard many years ago. Recently, I have had trouble hearing even people with fairly low frequency voices. It was definitely time for me after putting it off for well over 40 years. :)

Had an interesting day.
This morning we posted a notice of a pre-demolition sale for tomorrow.
Happened to look out the window and noticed people taking stuff from the house and loading it into their van.
DH went out and asked them what the @#$% they were doing. They got belligerent and starting yelling at him. Then the guy shoved him and he responded by punching him, and told me to call the police.
They took off, but got stopped.
We didn't press charges, but the whole island is going to know about this.

I am curious why you did not press charges? If this happened in my house the very least that would have happened is the miscreant being hosed down with pepper spray and being held for the police.

It was complicated.
He signed a waiver.
The sheriff said they would have a bad time and charges from their activities.
