Today, I am about to take my 6 year old MacBook Air off life support. It is down to under an hour battery life, and every few weeks just flakes out.

Just so you know, if there is nothing else wrong with it, Apple can put a new battery in it for $199. I did that with my five year old MacBook recently.

The trackpad had lost its ability to click, but otherwise the machine was fine.
I brought it in to the Apple Store and they opened it up to find the battery had swollen and was interfering with the trackpad. A new battery and the laptop is great again.

Good to know, and strange that they didn't mention this at the Apple store. Its also suffering from a lack of RAM, so its probably time to upgrade. 6 years is a pretty good lifespan.

I replaced the American flag I proudly fly. Las Vegas is actually in a valley and we are in a wind tunnel. Our flag was ripped so I wanted to get to it ASAP. Job done.

Today I have been resting up a pulled muscle so it was dinner at home and a Redbox movie. Last night we attended a California Shakespeare play at an outdoor amphitheater. The play was a well done, modernized version of Don Quixote. The night before we saw REO and Chicago at an outdoor concert and had a great time. I'd forgotten how many hits both groups had.

There was a 5K road race for veterans' causes this morning, which passed our house in both directions. We decorated the porch with bunting and flags, and set up a water table at the end of the driveway. Everyone was so pleasant and thankful for the water. It was a fun thing to do.

Rode for two hours on the bike trail this morning, then relaxing by the lake this afternoon. Others at the beach are starting to pack up to drive home until next weekend. It is so good to be free to stay here as long as we want!

When I was reaching for the net, this cutthroat jumped, from about six feet away, right into my lap in my kayak.

And here he is after baking with bacon and butter and liquid smoke:

Finished up another leg of my Route 66 road trip/photo tour - Gardner, Illinois to Miami, Oklahoma. Some rural areas are a nice step back in time.

We went to see Book Club. Gah. DH is allowed to get together with only Diane Keaton or Candice Bergen in the event of my untimely demise.

DW had a doctor's appointment I took her to. She's been in extreme pain in both her legs for 5 days now. We had been putting mulch down and planted a couple shrubs right before it started.

Doc says it's myositis and gave her steroids and some hydrocodone. She was going to give the DW 5, count them, 5 pills. DW begged to get 10. For lord's sake this is stupid. Her doc thinks it's from the mulch?
I'm patiently waiting for the pharmacy to call.

Just got a bunch of texts from my old lunch crowd. Megacorp ha been bought out and the reorganizations and riffs are starting.

And most importantly, you avoided the hassles of transitioning to a new/different laptop.

Ha! DW and I are pickleball addicts. You know you have a problem when most of your shirts have pickleball phrases printed on them.

Back in the day, DH and I played a lot of racquetball. In fact, we met on a racquetball court. We used to enter tournaments, and at the time we could enter two events each for $50 each, and the SWAG would include a t-shirt. We used to joke that we had a lot of $50 t-shirts.

The muscle memory from racquetball showed itself occasionally while we were playing pickleball, resulting in a return sent directly into the bottom 6” of the net. Oops!

Today I went out on what we call a family-style river trip. It’s a shorter/calmer section than the whitewater trips I work on the weekends. It’s usually less physically demanding, but demands a different mindset to guide.

Our trip today was 50 girls and four teachers from a Jewish HS in NYC. Perfect weather and a good water level, so I was enjoying life. However, after four hours of teenage drama I was glad to get them on their bus and out of my hair. The whines of “are we almost done?” started before we were halfway into the eight-mile trip. One raft of girls freaked out because there was a daddy long legs on their raft. Some of the girls seemed to take pride in being totally clueless about physical activity.

I’m proud that my daughters were never such sissies!

Learned that my oldest friend's wife has been diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to her brain, (inoperable)......I've known him for close to 52 years, and her almost as long.

I try to remain positive, but it hasn't been a good day.

We caught up on errands and household chores today. I made soup stock with bones and my freezer collection of veggie scraps and later on homemade soup with the stock. We walked the dog and had happy hour with wine on the patio.

Yesterday we saw two planetarium shows at Chabot Space and Science Museum followed by a walk in the Redwood Regional Park next door to the museum.

Terribly sorry to hear this. Your friend and his wife will be in my prayers.

Thank you...she has subsequently been informed that the brain tumor is inoperable, so they are investigating the possibility of chemo/radiation; but from my own sad experience, and from the sad experiences of other friends, the odds aren't good.

Nemo....my thoughts are with you and your friends.

(just have to tell this as it's almost unbelievable)

A new adventure today for DH and I as we felt like we were in a Marx Bros movie....

DH ordered a pizza online this evening. Along with the pizza, we got a free dvd rental.

Twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang. DH brought the food in and said the driver forgot the dvd, but would bring it to us soon. No biggie.. I noticed there was cheesy bread...we didn't order that. DH looked at the pizza and it was the wrong kind. He raced out to the driver before she left and told her of the mistake. She apologized and said she would take care of it. No biggie he said.

Ten minutes later, the phone rang. It was the pizza place apologizing, DH said...it's ok. The manager said they would send a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi for free..DH said thanks.

Fifteen minutes later the doorbell rang. A fellow had the pizza we ordered and dvd. DH asked about the Pepsi...the guy said he didn't know anything about the Pepsi, but he did have a 2 liter bottle of Dr Pepper. DH said...that's fine.

Once again our doorbell rang about 15 minutes later. The first driver was here again. She had the pizza we ordered, the movie and a 2 liter bottle of Pepsi. DH told her we had the pizza, the movie and the bottle of free soda. She asked DH if we wanted the pizza, we could have it as they got all the free pizza they could eat and it probably would be thrown away. She also said we could have the bottle of Pepsi since everything got so messed up. DH said...thank you.

She did take the dvd back tho...

Got to Dawson City today at 7PM with only one crack on the windshield. Watched the Can Can show at 10PM, then went to get the Sourtoe Cocktail with Yukon Jack afterwards.

It was midnight when I got back to the motorhome, and there was plenty of sunlight. It is almost the Summer Solstice.

Yesterday went to the dentist for the first part of a crown. I am somewhat immune to novacaine but it was worse at this appointment. Took 1 hour to get numb enough to start. Still, he kept hitting spots where it was such a jolt that it caused an involuntary jerk in my arm. This is a very gentle dentist - not his fault. But since he did say beforehand that he was pretty sure we could avoid a root canal, I already knew we were treading a thin line. They put on the temp and I went home, feeling fine.

Then the novacaine wore off. It was not just sore, it was throbbing. And it hurt to chew on. Now, with probably a root canal ahead and some begging for pain meds in the meantime, I took a couple of tylenol and went to bed depressed.

I woke up this morning and there was no pain whatsoever. No throbbing, no trouble chewing on it. I can't believe it. It is a molar miracle!
