Any Interest in Videogames Here?

On a Commodore PET?

Good spot. I can't remember what game she was "playing". As our 2 kids got a little older they used to play text based games as a reading and typing exercise. "You are in a maze of twisty little passages all alike".

One of the first that the kids played that had basic graphics was Granny's Garden, and it was written for the Acorn BBC Model B Computer in 1983.

Years ago I built a MAME cabinet from scratch. It houses a computer that can play 100’s of old school arcade games. I don’t play it often anymore, but people really enjoy it when they visit, plus it was fun to build.

I just started getting into Xbox games again. I got Red Dead Redemption 2 for Christmas and it really sucked me in. Highly recommended.

That looks really nice. What did you use for a monitor? LCD or a CRT?

I am playing Clash of Clans for now. As I don't like the politics of dealing with other team members, I play my own entire clan - much more relaxing.

DS got me hooked on CoC almost two years ago. I’ve been playing ever since. If you ever need a clan, let me know.

Almost entirely single player RPGs and strategy games and leaning more into playing older games and some indie games because I don't want to pay the money to keep up in the video card arms race.

As mentioned by another poster I play video games in preference to watching TV or movies. For that matter it has mostly replaced reading.

I never got past Pac Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong .

Though have crushed a few Asteroids back in the day :).

I was going to respond until I saw this! Exactly me while in the Navy circa 78-81. Had these in the Officer lounge and spent way too much time on them. But no more.

A couple more clasics from my day, the Oregon trail on tha ole apple iie and wolfenstein 3d for the 386. The simpsons arcade game at the rollee rink along with duckhunter for the nes console and big buck hunter. Therr was this old classic handheld football game too. I think it came in an off white and a green plastic casing with a very simple gameplay. Used to play that when I went over to my hncles as a boy. Once the PC games shifted to the Steam like monthly subscription based fees I sort of lost interest in PC gaming. I really do need to get back into a good solid game. I feel like ive saceificed gaming as my free time has dwindled as a parent.

Not currently into games. I enjoyed console games in college (favorite: Omega Race, but also Galaga and similar ones). Our daughter liked a PC based game when she was about 10: "Logical Journey of the Zoombinis". If I can find a version of that for my grandson in a few years, I think we could have fun with it--if he's not spoiled by a bunch of first-person graphic rich, thinking-free dreck by then.

This thread made me find and play Sid Meier's Civilization game, version 2.

when at home is often misuse games to test the computer servers i am assembling

( your video card is usually basic even if an add-in card )

but is stressing the CPU (s ) and memory and hard-drives ( not a global database but still detects some issues )

i used to play a lot of chess but most modern versions want to time limit the moves so have lost interest

Freecell from time to time

and Battle for Wesnoth https://wesnoth.org when the mood hits ( not very often )

have a 'chipped ' PS2 at home but haven't got home much recently , much prefer the Gamecube , (but rarely fire it up in the last 4 years ) the PS2 doubles as my DVD player

so am not the most avid game player among members

The early 80s arcades were where my interest was peeked.

Same here pretty much.
I finally mastered Pacman once you got to the "key" level, the screens were the same.

I still play the old games that give you time to think like Master Of Orion, Heroes of Might and Magic. I also played Wow for 6 years and recently activated my account to find it to be somewhat boring compared to the old days. I played for 3 months and deactivated the account again. I did play the complete SkyRim game and enjoyed.

With Q-Bert, once you got to the top level, the game did not become more difficult. And with free men every so number of points, I earned more of them than could be displayed, and more quickly than I lost them in play. Made for some long games!

PC gamer here, currently playing Escape From Tarkov in my spare time. I built my own gaming rig from the ground up a few years ago, and can see this as a hobby as I near ER.

Nobody here played Everquest? I don't even want to know how many hours I spent playing that game....
I played Everquest from launch for a couple of years.

I played a RTS on the old Windows gaming zone called Age of Empires. I was totally sucked in by the art work on the Box while browsing around at Best Buy many, many years ago. It was an awesome game whether in single player or multiplayer.

I moved from Everquest to Dark Age of Camelot and LOVED it until some time after the Age of Atlantis expansion which turned a great 3 faction realm versus realm game into a PVE game.

Next played Everquest 2 and I have played it off and on since launch. In fact I started back up playing EQ2 with the launch of their newest Time Locked Expansion server. It brings back some of the nostalgia of the original release with a very high population in all level ranges.

I played Diablo II and III long enough to beat the game a few times each and play hardcore.

I tried Warhammer Online (2 faction PVP), Age of Conan, Neverwinter Nights, and a few others but none held me like Everquest 1 & 2, DAoC, and Age of Empires. The Diablo franchise is good after a stressful day that calls for mowing thru wave after wave of undead. ;)

Super Mario Brothers and Zelda Ocarina of Time. We bought a Nintendo when we moved to PA in 1999. We figured that first winter we wouldn’t have much of a social life. It also got my then 6 yo languages-delayed DS very interested in reading. I would go up to the screen and read what the characters said, pointing at the words as I went.

I enjoyed Windwaker as well. Mariokart and Super Smash Brothers are good party games. DS and I bought the Nintendo Switch together, including BOTW, but I found myself getting stuck and lost too much to get very far.

Last year we an orchestral performance of Zelda music with videos showing in the background, in Baltimore. It was unbelievably fun. Way better than regular symphonic music!

I played Omega Race in the arcade a little, but I had it on cartridge on my vic-20 and loved it.

Endless Space 2 feels like a spiritual successor to MOO II.

coworker has a MAME cabinet in the game room here at work, so I've been playing Gaplus (Galaga 3) again, not as good at it as I was back when I was playing it in the arcades.

Just a suggestion, but you might consider giving Breath of the Wild another try sometime. It got massive acclaim, huge sales, and tons of game of the year awards. For someone who loves Zelda as much as you, I bet you'd enjoy it.

Virtual Reality games using PC and Oculus Rift. Elite Dangerous and Lone Echo are my two favorites but Beat Sabre is fun and a good workout.

Finally! I thought for a while I might be the only one... Started in my thirties with Bard's Tale on a C-64. Been playing computer games ever since (so that's three decades).

Have to admit we play a LOT. We used to use iMacs, but for gaming you can really use a PC. So we each have a PC and monitor set up in the Living Room at our seats on the couch.

Skyrim rocked, but my wife and I prefer co-op games. There is a team trying to mod it so it is multi-player. Nothing yet. https://skyrim-together.com/

We played WoW for over 12 years, but got tired of it about seven years ago. They just kept changing the skill set, and I couldn't keep up. I mean, just when I manage to learn to do decent DPS for my Paladin, they changed everything! That was it for me... [grumble, grumble] Did like it though.

We play Ark: Survival Evolved while we watch TV. We play PVE on our own server with a password, so no PVP involvements. Funny story on that one, though. When we first started playing we used an open world, built habitats, etc. Lots of stuff in storage. This guy popped in, asked if he could join. DW said sure, why not? A while later we were back at our main base and all our storage was empty. He didn't take it, just trashed it all and logged off. Hence, the password.

I loved the Fallout series. Played Fallout 4 multiple times. Multi-player Fallout 76 was fun for a while, and DW joined me. Still pop in to that one occasionally.

Love Runescape. Had an account so long ago it was the sixteen bit graphics. My original account got banned when someone hacked it and used my toon as a gold broker. There's no coming back from that. At least I know what to do with the newer guy.

Minecraft. That's a go-to though it is single player.

My son wants me to learn to compete with him (teamed) in Starcraft II, but he's a Diamond-level player, so that's not going to happen.

My brother wanted me to join him in The Division 2, but he has a team developed from the first and I'm the outlier. He's big into Tanks.

Far Cry Primal (it's okay). Subnautica (love the building mechanics). 7 Days to Die (I don't live long.)

Have tried lots of games, but prefer the survival/build games, which is why we like Ark and Subnautica (and where Minecraft shined, even if it was only blocks).

Might check some of the ones you mentioned. Thanks.

And thanks for asking...

+1 Totally agree. HoMM is a great series. I do like the ones that give us time to think. Steam had Darklands on sale a while back and I had to buy it just to reminisce. That was a great game in 1992, though I find it less so now.
