What did you do today? - 2020 version

Also, I've been taking a few days to try to be free of the media. I've been avoiding the news on tv and trying to avoid it online. I was just watching too much of all the bad news recently and felt like it was getting to me. I know it's there, I just want to take a break and not think about it all the time. I can't fix any of it. It feels good to take some time away from the turmoil.

I've been doing the same for months now as I have no control over any of it. I feel like a new man again. The TV is usually never on in our house, and good riddance to it. Occasionally, DW will watch a Netflix show. I read, or come here, or walk the dog.

All morning volunteered my time and part of the afternoon to do some maintenance at a softball complex. A friend and myself do small jobs for a park and rec in our area. I always enjoy the relaxed atmosphere when doing these small jobs.

It is very rewarding that I can give back and be able to do the physical labor involved. It is so good for me in many ways.

DS and I spent the late morning yesterday finishing up a drive and trailer parking place for a new member out here. In grading the pad DS tilted the blade too much and dropped the blade on the ground. Normally you just reset everything and turn the crank to reengage. Not this time. The blade sat too low. Without thinking, I picked the blade up so he could reengage it. That felt like it undid all the healing in my hip from my skiing fall last February. After a fairly sleepless night and hobbling around this morning, it is now feeling much better so I should be back to house building tomorrow.

You’re doing your part to make the country quiet again.

Just finished my annual ritual. I take the first tomato from our plants and make a BLT sandwich. Sourdough bread, 5 slices of bacon ,the tomato sliced, and of course Hellman's/ Best Foods mayo:D

We transplanted our tomatoes out to the garden today - 13 of them. We're still waiting for the last two to get big enough to put out. We've got Sungold, San Marzano, Principe Borghese, Mortgage Lifter and a golf-ball sized volunteer. We grow them all from seed. This year, we are trying red plastic under the plants. It is said to improve productivity. Now we need to convince someone to take all the extra seedlings we grew (I usually start a couple more seeds than I anticipate planting out, just in case some don't make it.)

We also planted out the bell peppers, jalapenos, brussels sprouts and thyme. Sometime next week we'll put out the eggplants. We need to wait for the flea beetles to die down before we do that. I'm also hoping to put out the poblanos and cubanelles within the next two weeks. I just started some kale seeds under the lights indoors. We'll see how it goes.

We went to pick up a cap and gown and drop off textbooks with our high school senior. The principal was there, and the kids who wanted to put on their cap and gown and went up on a riser with the principal. (Everyone wore masks, and they did an elbow bump.) There will be a televised "graduation ceremony" next week, we will make our kid wear the regalia at home. :D

The super-long extendable window-washing pole that I ordered from Amazon arrived today so I was able to clean the last four windows on the outside that formerly were reachable only with a long extension ladder but this time my feet were on the ground.

Also delivered was a lawn striping kit for the lawn mower and I installed the framework for that. Just in time for 90+ temperatures tomorrow so I think I'll hold off on using it until the fall unless we get some heavy rain.

The latest DIY sushi fest featuring imported Japanese Hamachi from Catalina Offshore;

Hamachi Maki along with some Kappa Maki (english cuke) and some sashimi on the side

I had to be home by curfew time today due to the protests and looting, but it wasn't a problem since not much is open yet due to the COVID19 closures. Other than that my day was actually fine. Our neighborhood is quiet and I did some online shopping since I'm not going near any stores any time soon.

I'm going to get one of those. I didn't even know they existed for home use until I saw your post.

I had my annual physical today and I'll get the results of the blood work in a couple of days. My Doc was impressed by my fast recovery on my hip implant and for being the healthiest 76 year old patient she has (maybe she was just being nice?).

After the morning appointment, DW and I went out to a local diner for a late breakfast as I was starved (fasting for the blood work).

I spent the rest of the day running errands and ordering a birthday cake for DD who turns 41 next week. Yeah, she still likes a family party.

We had 8000 gallons of water delivered to put in our small (18'x 48") pool that I just erected again this Spring. In past years, we have filled from our non-softened well that has lots of rust in the water. The pool turns yellow, until I run the pump/sand filter for several days, and treat with lots of chemicals. The water we had delivered needed none of this, and was under $300.

Bought a Whirlpool dishwasher after the present one started making loud noises from the motor bearings. Installation is next Tues.

Also started tearing apart the coaster break and broken spokes on the rear wheel of a bike I rescued from roadside recycle trash. I just hope I can remember how it goes back together once I grease it and replace the spokes. Probably should get some new (cheap) tires for it so I can ride it on the beach.

Cheers!

Watched the cement show.

Guys arrived at 5:30, cement truck at 6. Six guys pumped out 10 cubic yards of concrete in one hour. Truck and pump leaving now, guys are busy tooling the slabs.

The cement truck and the pump are gone, the guys are now putting the final touches on the slabs. The driveway addition has black & white pebbles on the surface to match the other side. The shed slab will be brushed and the patio and stepper "pavers" will get a smooth finish. Color is what we wanted a medium grey. Everything looks good and it's fun to watch it all happen.

Those guys know what they're doing and work hard. Four guys came at 8 yesterday and left at 5. Bigger crew today, with a older guy that's doing a lot of finish work.

Rainy day. Got done something on the list that has been there for a long time. I decided to do a HSA withdrawal for all of our medical expenses from when we established our HSA in 2010 to end of 2019. I had got a start on it back in January but was uninspired to finish it until today. Glad to have that done. I'll do it annually from now on.

I didn't want the opportunity to withdraw those past medical expenses to be overlooked if I get hit by a beer truck and I didn't want to stick DW and DD with the task.

Got to listen to my whole house generator working, since a nasty storm knocked out power in the area. Neighbors is working fine too.

I got an early start on my daily walk today since it was forecast to be in the low 90s today, which it was. I might have to post to the “This weather is awful“ thread!

A former coworker lives down the street. As I approached his house I saw him getting into his car carrying a briefcase. The smile I had almost broke my face!

Another guy and myself volunteered from 8 to noon trimming trees along central avenue in a small community. The went to ranch till 330 to water tree nursery I have started in hopes to get some wild berry trees a good start to life.
I then got home and had to cut 10 inch stubs from a tree in my back yard. I had to go up about 20 feet on ladder and chain sawed off 3 to 4 foot long ~10 inch around ash stubs from a live tree. I have a belt and scare strap unit so just belted off up in tree.
I'm tired and watch news now. Lol

I was looking something up and by dumb luck came across a reference to Max Baer known best for his roll as Jethro Bodine in The Beverly Hillbillies.

He is the only cast member of the TV show still alive. It must be all those smarts from having a 6th grade education.
