Wow, it’s getting really scary in Texas - and everywhere else!

Denver tried closing the liquor stores in March. That lasted about 90 minutes after causing near riots in the stores. When it happened I was briefly thinking that I could so be the king of the black market, heh.

Wow, Florida with +11,458 cases today caught up to TX!

But TX numbers haven’t yet posted on worldometers. ;)

Both are above 190,000 cases! So I guess they are both crossing 200,000 soon. At this rate Florida could do it tomorrow!

I assume Texas will stay ahead for today, but Florida could vault into 3rd place soon enough.
Go gators.

I think there were a few states that tried making liquor stores non-essential, but reversed course promptly.

Yeah, TX has been holding around 8000 cases a day, and Florida has had much higher daily cases recently.

The only question is which city/state will go through what New York/New Jersey went through. This pandemic is here to stay unless vast majority of us abide by common sense - social distancing, masks, washing hands, changing business practices (and enforcing them).

Frankly, I'm worried about Houston unless the new daily case count stops going up so fast.

+1. So far, the death rates in states experiencing these big increases in infection cases has not climbed significantly (at least the last time I looked). But, epidemiologists are predicting that it's just a matter of time, and they will.

Even if, say, 80% of us abide by common sense and do all the right things, the 20% that don't will likely be enough to keep this virus spreading at a pretty high rate. Right now, it seems to be some (not all) young people that are not using common sense, but I see plenty of older folks not taking sensible precautions also. Some folks just don't think this virus is a big deal, and they are not going to change their ways to help stop the spread.

Yes, social distancing inside as well as reduced number of customers were required in bars.

OK - if your distinction is that the bar was required to enforce this, then you have a point. But the customers also were not complying with the new rules. Some bars tolerated this, others didn’t. But guess what, they all got shut back down.

I’m aware of social distancing GUIDELINES but no laws, but honestly it’s hard to follow all the miss-matched changing regulations. (I might pay closer attention if we were leaving the house)

Keep in mind I’m in my early 30’s. All my friends are taking it very seriously but there are many people I know around here with different political affiliations that view the situation differently. It is not an age issue so much as beliefs.

I rarely leave the house to go to populated places, so maybe one in 20 gloves is covid related. My gloves are used for dealing with hazardous and messy things like lead, lye, leather tanning chemicals, hot chilies, etc. Many online suppliers are out or won't sell to anyone who is not a medical worker. I found a case of blazer orange 6mm industrial gloves for twice what I used to pay at Costco and will be set for a long time if it actually ships to me.

Did you try Harbor Freight? There was plenty when I was there last time. The prices are lower than Costco and you can even get the heavy duty 9 mil industrial gloves. I don't wear nitrile gloves when shopping but my wife does. She also bought some 3M NIOSH N95 masks and a face shield back in early February after we returned on a flight from our condo in Florida. She saw what was going on at the airport and on the plane and went into "prepper" mode. She is also a licensed nurse and stocked up on medical supplies (saline drips, medication, and other supplies) in case either of us or a neighbor got sick. We haven't use the face shields yet but use the masks when in public places with safety glasses. Pretty soon they will be mandating face shields and masks. Those regular cloth masks or so called medical masks from China offer little protection.

At this point I will wait to see if my order is filled because if it is, I am set for gloves for a long time. Hunter orange gloves will be appropriate when cleaning game.

I doubt we will see any mandating of face shields or real masks any time soon. They simply aren't available and people are resistant to even the easier to wear cloth stuff. Tell them they have to put on a respirator and you will have open revolt even more than now.

The only good news is bad news according to the press. I can remember just a few months ago when all the press cared about were deaths per day. Now that number seems to be getting lower, it will focus on new cases. Covid is real, no doubt about it. Still, I feel like we are being manipulated by our government when they don't care about large protests but don't want to let people gather at the beach or the parks.

I think you are onto something!

Speaking of the great state of Texas...

First link is Dr. Joseph Varon on video in Houston. Posted yesterday, July 3. As I recall, he's worked 100+ days in a row and still has a 96% success rate treating COVID even though he practices in an inner city hospital where many patients have underlying conditions. He has an opinion about people who are not complying with safe practices.

Mentioned is a cocktail of individual low-cost medications that Dr. Varon and a group of others are finding helpful for hospital (advanced) COVID. This is referring to the MATH+ Protocol found here: https://covid19criticalcare.com/treatment-protocol/

That is excellent news!

If I need a face shield style thing I was going to try to use my Cocoons brand Night Driving Fitovers to wear with my mask. They are basically clear and fit around my glasses.

State laws vary, but a lot (maybe all?) of them have a statue that says you must follow health orders issued by the Gov or health dept and naming the penalties for those who don't. So even though nobody's passed a law that says "must stay 6 feet apart", a health order that says it is essentially the same.

In my state, the penalty for failure to comply with a lawful health order is a fine up to $1K and/or up to 90 days in jail. We've had a few news reports of the max fine for people who deliberately and knowingly flouted the orders, but that's really been the exception.

I agree with you that it's not just a "young people misbehaving" problem. The average age of new cases is going down here in CA and I think also in TX and FL, so there is some of that; but there are also more young people getting called back to their jobs in restaurants, bars, gyms, etc, so more of them are getting exposed. Overall, most of the people I see of all ages are doing their best, but then there are people like my next door neighbor who had a dinner party on her patio last week, with everyone over 70 and sitting shoulder to shoulder.

In my state liquor is very heavily taxed. Closing them would be the final death blow to the already beat up state budget.

LOL! So is safe sex now a condom and a face mask?

Nah, it is just easier for middle aged people to settle back into their existing relationships than it is for young adults at the age when they are looking to meet people. And if you live in an apartment there is no backyard to drink in.
