Wow, it’s getting really scary in Texas - and everywhere else!

Son in law took his youngest (15) to participate in a DFW area baseball tournament this past weekend. He got a call yesterday that a member of the team tested positive. He has been working from home so no big change to his routine, but his teen son is bummed to be "grounded" for the next two weeks.

Yes, I hope no one got infected. Of course the 15 year olds will most likely recover, their parents/grandparents, maybe not. I would be interested to know if they infection spread at a baseball tourney so please report back. I am a big baseball fan.

Harlee, per your request I'm following up after my son-in-law and grandson sat out their two weeks. Neither they or anyone else associated with the team got sick, so they are back to baseball as usual - two practices a week plus a tournament on the weekend.

Fingers crossed.

Well that is a huge relief!

I am so glad! Maybe there is hope for the pro baseball teams with positive cases.

New Covid hospitalizations in Greater Houston continue to decline.

Total Covid patients hospitalized declined again and down 14% week over week.

https://www.tmc.edu/coronavirus-updates/tmc-daily-new-covid-19-hospitalizations/

Hmm, those numbers don't chive with what is provided by which also has a caveat that due to the change in federal requirements in reporting, as of 7/23 they now only have 82% of hospitals reporting https://txdshs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/0d8bdf9be927459d9cb11b9eaef6101f

EDIT: oh maybe your chart is just newly admitted and doesn't account for how many are still in the hospital implying there is a substantial amount of people not getting better.

These are the charts I've been watching, hospitalizations are down, but not 14%, it looks more like it has stabalized.

Look at the detailed charts. The new patients admitted has been down steadily. There are also fewer Covid patients hospitalized. This is Texas Medical Center, greater Houston.

Texas did not actually report any new deaths today - the trend line is still stuck at 7/24.

But they did say total reported fatalities are now 5877 - 5713 = an increase of 164 today.

8341 new cases today, so the daily cases averages should keep coming down a bit.

Maybe all those required m* are actually working! Plus more people taking it seriously, I imagine. And the bars remain closed, and allowed gatherings are very limited in size.

Well, nothing seems to be working in Florida. New cases have leveled but remains very high. Both hospitalizations and deaths are still increasing, as is the fatality rate of hospitalized patients. The 7 day moving avg of daily fatalities is 141, hospitalizations is 465, and rhe ratio of fatalities to hospitalizations has reached 30%.

Wow, ratio of Florida hospitalizations to deaths is 30%. Am I correct--that means 30% of the patients admitted to hospitals in Florida for Covid dies? This virus is even worse than I thought. Michael, is there any break down of ages for fatalities?

There’s no demographic breakdown. The state releases a limited data set. The ratio of fatalities does not consider date of hospitalization, so we don’t know the survival rate of newly hospitalized patients, but it is very high. The expectation that there have been significant improvements in treatment does not show in this data.

Big jump in Texas deaths today - 6190 total from 5877 yesterday. That’s 313 additional deaths! There must still be some catchup going on.

I’m seeing stories about how the age of people infected is starting to rise, and speculations that younger people are now spreading it to older household members or relatives. https://www.texastribune.org/2020/07/29/coronavirus-young-people-spread-older-relatives/

Unfortunately that would indicate deaths could rise more even with stabilizing daily new cases.

9042 for new cases, so seems to be stabilizing around 9000.

The Florida new case totals will improve this weekend, since they are shutting down all testing Fri through Mon due to the potential tropical storm Isaiah.

Hell, why didn't you put that in the "good news" thread?

Looks like Georgia is getting ready to move into the top five, as it will probably pass New Jersey in total case count by the end of the week. Pretty shocking though, as it has 1/3 population of TX and 1/2 the population of FL.

Dallas County reported 36 Covid-19 deaths for Wednesday, a new record. Seems the "Good News, Good News" parrot hasn't been spending time around DFW.

Yes. The new reporting methodology
has resulted in more than the usual distortion in the daily figures.

Meanwhile new hospitalizations continued to decline in greater Houston. Total Covid patients hospitalized declined week over week by 16 percent.

Meanwhile in Dallas county, new cases fell below 1000 for three straight days, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Here’s an article on it if anyone’s interested.

Florida Will Pause Coronavirus Testing Due To Impending Storm https://www.npr.org/sections/corona...se-coronavirus-testing-due-to-impending-storm

I am interested. Thanks for posting the link, it looks like the storm is going to track right up the center of Florida. We walked down to our street market this morning and were talking to some friends who were complaining that all 5 of their rain butts were empty and the forecasted overnight rain today had not happened. A storm like this would certainly fill them up!

More recent NOAA predicted track shows probably skimming up east side of state. That would certainly be better for us here in central GA.

You escaped Hannah by being in GA, do you get a feeling that bad weather is following you?

DD sent us a text at 4:33am her time today. She was woken by a small earthquake (4.2) whose epicentre was just 19 miles from her house.

Just another reminder on how much worse things could be.

We didn’t escape Hanna even though we weren’t physically there! It came very close to our TX place. Neighbors reported almost 17 inches of rain in less than 24 hours and sewer backup in a couple of houses. We had gusts to 50 mph and hours of winds at 40+. I could only watch remotely through our doorbell cameras as the storm was doing its darndest to blow the screens off our motorhome - something that has never happened before. Our neighbors were able to pickup and stow those afterwards and rescue a grill cover. We didn’t lose power, thankfully, so I was able to see damage around most of the house the next morning via various cameras. Hopefully no roof issues - some neighbors lost some shingles.

Yeah, I don’t like being in the path of another tropical storm!

That does sound like a close call. Great that your power and internet stayed up and that your neighbours were good enough to help out.
