Workouts - 2021

I've also found my Concept 2 rower to be useful during COVID. It's providing me some base cardio work as well as some interval training. We keep in the living room behind the couch, so it's always available. And we can watch television while we work. It's easier to monitor heart rate and train for recovery using the rowing machine.

I really liked and regularly used the Concept 2 rower at the gym. I’ve been considering buying one for home (knowing that they’re back ordered). But I’m dealing with PT now for a small rotator cuff tear; I want to make sure I’ll get back to full use of that shoulder before I plunk down $900 or so.

I have a running streak going since 5/1 and a rowing streak since 1/1, so did both today. I really need to focus more on lifting and yoga, but I don’t love them as much as rowing/running.

Friar - not sure if you are going to OT/PT after your surgery, but I dislocated my shoulder last year, and my OT highly recommended rowing as a way to help strengthen my shoulder muscles. I was hesitant given my injury, but listened to her advice and my upper body strength has improved to the point where it’s become a necessary part of my exercise routine.

Compound movement exercise may be what I need more of.

Since my knee surgery, I have done a lot to increase my leg strength which faded badly after two years of babying the knee and then recovery from the surgery. I also so some upper body strength training for the chest and arms and some for my core. However......

Recently, I have begun to realize I have lost range of motion and my muscles just don't coordinate well with each other. Its hard to explain, but putting a heavy box up on a shelf doesn't go smoothly. Neither does taking the box down. IOW, if I was the Tin Man, I would be suffering from rusted joints. :)

I watched a few of the Team Body Project videos and they seems to offer what I need - more coordinated motion. I would appreciate any other recommendations for a workout plan/system that includes more full body motion.
Yoga. But it really requires personal instruction/observer for a beginner as correct form is not obvious at first.

Yoga does really help gradually increase full range of motion and flexibility. It also helps improve balance. And strength.

Thanks. Actually, this is my last-ditch attempt to avoid surgery. Some of the exercises we do at PT (and which I also do at home with tubular bands) involve a rowing motion. I’ve asked him about a C2 rower but at this point he would only want me using it for 5 minute sessions, not as a full workout. So I’m reluctant to spring for the price until I’m convinced I’ll get back to using it for “real” exercise.

Ran 3 miles in 29 minutes at the park.

Away from all the cars, 47* at 7am, just a great environment. Its as close as I'm going to get to the forest in my area.

Good luck avoiding surgery! Definitely not worth springing for one for 5 minutes, especially if there is any risk of further injury. Happy healing!!!

Dang, that's some serious humpin'!

Thanks.

Working to get back into race shape for when events open up again. Was doing good last Fall locally, hitting the podium for a couple third place finishes, but the competition will be much stiffer for the bigger events I have on the schedule for later this Spring and Summer.

Biggest event this Summer is a 4 stage (day) gravel bike race in the Rockies; 250 miles and 24,000 ft of vertical. Let the good times roll!

Hiked 435 mi in 2018, 485 in 2019, 528 last year. So set a goal of 550 for 2021. That is just a shade under 1.5 mi/day. Sometimes challenging in New England winters. I am fortunate that near each of our 2 homes there are 5-6 conservation tracts, state parks, etc. Miles and miles of trails and I never get tired of going. I enjoy the changes in nature seasonally too. Our two dogs made almost all of those miles with me too, although our older one at 13.5 yrs is really slowing down, so I am leaving him at home pretty often lately.

Farmer's walk today. I moved stuff to paint and blocked the gym again, but grabbed a pair of 60lb dumbbells and walked up and down the basement stairs 15 times (5 sets of 3).

I do pushups and dumbbells 3 days a week normally but the last week I have only been using a chainsaw.

The Concept 2 rower is pretty awesome for a good upper and lower body aerobic workout. Much less boring than a treadmill. Not that expensive compared to other exercise equipment. But might be hard to find these days.

I see a lot of good talk about Concept 2 rowers here. So I thought I would add one to my home gym. Not now - every one of their models has a waiting list.

Push-ups every day, and today I ran about 2 miles. I haven't really run much for a few years, so that was a bit painful, and I took a few short walking breaks.

Right, I figured that just as I was posting about it.

3 miles in the park. Interval training. About 5 of them, about 1 or 2 minutes each.

Some of you do very serious workouts almost at the level of crossfit.
Have you exercised as such intensity all your life or did you develop the love for hard workouts once you retired?

Do any of you use videos like YouTube or DVD's that you follow?
If you have suggestions, I would like to check out especially for women and also not crazy stuff (no plans to buy 20 lb. dumbbells; 8,10,12,15 are good enough for me).
I'm also beyond age to test risky exercises to avoid unnecessary inflammations. E.g. I stopped doing jumping lunges for that reason a few years ago.

Today threw my bike on the rack on the car and took it along with me to the gym.

Did an intense hour of intervals on the treadmill followed up by 100 situps. Then geared up and grabbed the bike off the car roof for 2 hours, 30 miles and 2,000 ft of vertical on my favorite gravel roads.

Got home and lovely wife and I got out to work her new knees in a stroll around the park.

Great day under beautiful clear skies and warm temps.

I've invented a new exercise - I call it Dance Walking. If I'm listening to some really inspirational dance music while walking outside, I often start upper body dancing while walking. This is really good for getting my heart rate up. I'm usually walking faster than usual anyway listening to such music.

I don't care if I look weird to my neighbors. If they ask me I'll just tell them "dance walking!" as if it's a real thing.

Got a new Apple Watch. Got my Apple Fitness+ 3 months free. Have the app up on our iDevices and Apple TV. It's looking great! Lots of options. The best thing is that it shows your Apple Watch workout numbers on the display while you do a workout. Easy to switch between users/watches too.

A new iPad Air is on the way for our workout room (which doesn't have a TV).

DH is using a rowing app on his iPhone right now.

Today I walked 2.5 miles in the neighborhood along with DW & our Terrier.
I did 5 to 10 push ups & body squats.

I am just starting out after a long time, leg is short, weak & has a limp after a complicated knee replacement.

Thanks for a helpful thread !

My morning was spent shoveling out the drainage ditch that runs through my orchard. Better workout than the machines at the gym.

Afternoon went out on my bike for 2 hours, 2,600 of vertical and 19 miles of gravel road riding.

Headed back out with lovely wife for a leisurely 1-mile walk around the park to exercise her new knees.
