Travel hopes 2021

I think a lot of people are sticking closer to home. Hard to find cabins for rent in the Mendocino -> Arcadia coast. Might just staycation for 1 trip

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable going to Europe this year, still hoping for Australia December 2021

Odds are much better with Europe than Australia this year or early next year.

Australia is behind even the Europeans in vaccinations.

Yup. I'm already starting to plan Europe in 2022. Having used just a fraction of our travel budget for two years, we're itching to get over there.

Summary please - not naked links.
I do links so ppl will know I'm not making this up. But bottom line:
1. Can restart in July 2021 if 95% crew / 98% passengers fully vaccinated
2. Test voyages not needed
3. Embarkation: rapid antigen COVID-19 test before embarkation
4. Disembarkation: those who were exposed to or contracted COVID-19 may to drive home if port is close to their home OR may quarantine in a hotel if flying home

Cruising.

I guessed that you were talking about the CDC telling cruise lines they could restart in July with new conditions, but it was not obvious. Others reading the forum might not understand what you were hinting at and not want to click on links.

And I think the requirement is 98% of the crew and 95% of the passengers fully vaccinated.

If the CDC and presumably the WH is going to sign off on cruises, can't imagine they won't allow Europeans to visit here as reciprocity for Americans being allowed to visit over there.

Just back from a 5 week driving trip across southern Utah. Our Baltic cruise was cancelled, and looking to replace it with a cruise to the Canaries out of Northampton. Just got my 2nd Pfizer. DW has been done for a while.

In Mexico at Riviera Maya now for a week of rest and relaxation. A little quiet here as compared to our last trip in January 2020. Sitting in the shade and enjoying ocean breezes never gets old.

First significant trip for us looks like a vacation to the Southwest around the end of October, flying in and out of Las Vegas mostly because of nonstop flights from our home city.

My wife is on all the cruise line mailing lists--by mail and internet. And they're really throwing some big deals out there to book a trip--including free drinks and no tips.

Right now, there is just one ship running in Europe. But I expect to see ships come online for the Eastern Med (Greece) and possibly the Scandinavian region.

We'll just have to see about the cruises in/out of England and those out of Spain and Italy.

I'll admit the Greek Isles and Scandinavia are the best cruises we've ever been on. And we surely would like to return.

I'm looking for flights from LAX to Europe on Business Class for September/October. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have indicated that regular passenger service is expected to resume mid-May 2021. I can't see it happening until June or July. I see very few deals reported on the Flyertalk forum premium flight deals thread since there are very few international flights available to non-essential passengers. What I have noticed is with US domestic flights, airlines offer deals about 6-8 weeks before that flight and then fairs climb up fairly quickly. I expect the same to happen with international flights once they resume.

Definitely no cruising in 2021 or most likely 2022.

Covid situation is going up and down. Would like to get to Greece in the fall but not if everything is closed up. Same for Cyprus. If not,or plus perhaps Mexico in November or December.

For Jan-March we have our hopes set on SE Asia-Thailand and Vietnam. Would like to include Australia but we really do not expect it to be open by then.

We have been following the actual covid stats rather than the rhetoric for those target destinations of ours. Realistically we know that the chances of going to Greece and Cyprus are slim but we are always hopeful. Same for Mexico.

Being open is not good enough for us. We have to feel comfortable about it and we are certainly not going to fly to a country that remains in partial lockdown.

That i where we are at too. Our one trip out of country got nixed by DW's doctor, but it was a pretty tame visit to the UK to stay with friends and play cards and mostly hang out.
For now it is just camping for us, in the three western states.

We had to scrub our plans for London and Rome last May and hope to resurrect them next Spring. We are considering a jaunt to Hawaii this fall. This would be our third vacation there and want to do Maui and Kauai this time.

I don't know if Hawaii will be better in the fall but right now, the prices are crazy.

There are accounts of hotels raising prices, trading lower occupancy for higher profits.

There are a lot of people going to Hawaii because overseas aren't an option yet.

But they also said the most-often searched for locations by Americans are Mexico and the Caribbean, which I thought were mostly open.

I recently bought plane tickets for travel in June to visit family in my favorite flyover state. The last time I jumped on a plane was in August 2019 - hard to believe that in June it will have been almost 2 years since my last flight. The Covid-19 numbers in the U.S. are still very poor but I think it's worth the risk (I'll be fully vax'ed by then).

Initial look at a multi-city flight itinerary using Google showed ~$530 RT from Phoenix to Maui to Kaui to Phoenix economy. Car rentals looked ridiculous on Maui until I used Autoslash.com: for 5 nights compact car, Trip Advisor quoted ~$1200, Costco quoted $750 and autoslash quoted $340. The latter was for Hertz through Priceline so not a fly by night. Accommodations look expensive but we are not resort types anyway as we are only in our room for sleeping. When we stayed in Hilo last time, we found Arnott's Lodge perfect for us.

Yeah, the "bundlers" have always been the way to go to HI - at least back when we were tourists. Don't know what flexibility you have these days, but we used to "delete" the airpor-transfers (and, after the first trip, the lei greeting) and add back a car for not much more - of course, then we found out you had to PARK the blasted thing.

I assume Hawaii and many other destinations will eventually settle back into their merely expensive rates (rather than the current gauging) rates. One thing (most frequent travelers know): Find out up front what the taxes will be as I do not believe they are ever quoted in the prices. These "luxury" fees added by the state ad up REAL fast and I don't think there's any way to avoid them other than staying home, but YMMV.

Dang!!!

Looks like my August bicycle race in British Columbia is getting cancelled. It’s a four day four stage suffer fest through the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Was so looking forward to a few days racing with my Canuck buddies.

I looked at some rates in early April and then the last couple of days.

Airfares are higher but the hotels were crazy.

Condos on Kauai would be about $300-400 a night, after taxes and resort fees. And the pictures shown on the booking site shows something from the '80s or 90s, not renovated.

May be perfectly clean but kind of skeptical.

Didn't even check Waikiki, which probably would be even higher, especially with parking.

Business Class fares from LAX to GVA via Zurich are now $2281 return during the month of August 2021 on Swiss Airlines. The only issue is that they still have not opened up to non-essential travel yet. The price of the tickets are the lowest I have every seen from Swiss Airlines.

We have been watching the pricing of various air from Canada that we are familiar with in the past or have been watching for some time. All economy.

Fly to Athens, come home from London/Paris in late Sept-Nov. Prices up 15 percent from what we paid in fall 2019.

Mexico in late Nov/Dec-PV or Cancun: Prices are identical to what we paid in last 2019

Morocco-Oct/Nov. Return flights shopped have been the same price for several years.

Bangkok/Kualu Lumper: Jan-March snowbird trip. Pricing has been the same as what we have paid over four or the last five years or so.

We have been getting some amazing resort and hotel offers. All advertise fully refundable. Many 25 percent or more off past pricing.

We are not interested in booking until we know what the covid/post covid situation will be. Not overly optimistic that we will be able to travel in 2021 but if something does open we can go on short notice. Of course, these prices are today. Who knows what will happen six or nine months from now.

I guess travel works both ways. Relatives in Europe have been contacting us to visit us in Florida or Southern California. Normally we get one or two visits per year but we already have four requests for the this year starting in September.
