What was your happiest moment today?

^^So Cool!
I always think diving looks so interesting, but no way I could do it--too claustrophobic.

I had not dived for 20 years but a friend encouraged me to apply to be volunteer diver at the local science center. I was honest about my hiatus but they still took me at 70. So now I'm getting to dive in all of 14.5' of water with sharks and rays while scrubbing the artificial coral and waving to little kids. That's about all the scuba I care to do these days. Even when younger going down to 120 just didn't feel all that comfortable. Going to do the penguin tank here shortly. Tame but fun!

I like Birkenstock sandals- some designs are just plain ugly but they're made in Germany under fair working conditions, and they last. I have 2 pairs of "vegan" (more expensive than if they call them plastic) in yellow and blue and one pair with uppers decorated in a flower pattern. My granddaughters ages 4 and 7, always admire them.

So...Birkenstock sent me a catalogue and it had little sandals with a pattern of unicorns and flowers on the uppers. DDIL is thrifty and buys all the kids' stuff at a good consignment shop (simultaneously cheaper, greener and better-made since they've lasted through at least one kid) so I asked if it was OK for me to buy sandals for the girls. I know she and DS don't want them all hung up on brand names. She agreed. They were all excited and, as I expected, bypassed the sparkly leathers for the unicorn version. They arrived today and DDIL sent me pictures.

It is good to be a BTD Grandma.:D

Still Easing In

45 here, retired 4 months ago. *Part* of it was my choosing, but part of it was that after 22 years of starting, owning, and turning around companies and making rather good money, I ran into some failure - - part my fault, part circumstances and market forces. So - I was used to having lots of money - and certainly saved well too. And I had planned on having "more" when I'm 50-60.

Long and short for now, I'm out. I've got about $3.4 mill - - plus a $1mill house paid off and have been working on getting asset allocation organized, and maybe exploring some rental homes (I've had a few before).

Ups and downs. Some times I feel tears..... no sign with my name. No 45 employees. No big profitable months. BUT.....I also feel that with my assets and smart spending - - I can still live rather well, take care of college costs, etc. I know it's been "easy" for stocks - - but right now .... I've not cut back one expense - and I have more money today than I did 4 months ago.

Happiest moment today: I was on my morning walk outside. I thought of how I woke up early, had quiet time to my self, had breakfast just me and my 13 year old girl, saw my 8 year old boy and Wife..... then I saw Leave it To Beaver. Then I went for the walk and was gonna proceed to cook myself a perfectly awesome egg white breakfast.

And my biggest quandary was the day was - where am I gonna eat lunch today.

I started to giggle out loud during my walk - for quite awhile

Wrapped up a mountain bike race series tonight. Was hot and dusty at 99 degrees, but still very fun. Ended the series in 9th out of 33 very fast racers. Happy with that result for this 5 week/race series.

And when I got home, wife had gone downtown and brought back takeout. Yummy Poke salad was waiting for me. A good day!

After delays due to real life, and additional time to jump through plan hoops, I finally have my larger 401(k) in transfer status. Two checks are coming (I sure hope they did it right). One check for rollover to Schwab, and one check with withdrawal of post-tax money.

So, getting the text message from plan that this was happening was a happy moment. I guess that's why they sent a duplicate text message with same verbiage. And icing on the cake was getting duplicate emails about same!

Realizing a few minutes ago that today is the anniversary of my retirement 16 years ago.

And all those decisions on when to take SS, :)

Wait, what, there's a debate about when to take SS? :)

Yes, it is! and Fun, too!
I just bought a little back pack, activity and coloring books, reading books for DGS to take on his upcoming vacation with his Dad.

The public library opened for real this week, including the local genealogical library. Upon leaving, I approached the front desk and offered to pay the $0.80 fine that's been on my account since the Before Times. The librarian told me they've forgiven all fines during the pandemic.

Sweet!

Spending an uncrowded day in the Canadian Rockies. Bow Lake, Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake. Ice covered, blue sky, 29C (84F) and a cool breeze coming off each lake we visited. Plus a bear sighting.

My happiest moment today was just chillin in the backyard after dark with DH having a beer and enjoying all the solar light decorations.

I retired in December of 2020.

My last boss (2015-2020) was a young fellow in his mid-thirties. We always got on very well, and we like and respect each other.

My happiest moment today was when he called me (first time since I retired) and told me he and his wife are expecting twins in six months - two girls.

And they had triplets (all girls) in January of 2016. So it will be five daughters, his wife, and him. He is outnumbered for the rest of his life, and he couldn't be more thrilled. :D

He called me thirty minutes before he told the rest of my old department (virtually). I was tickled and honored that he wanted to share his good news with me first!

Being able to go outside wearing just a t-shirt and jeans. For some reason I'd thought of winter and appreciated not having to bundle up when going outside.

I'm easy to please.:)

Saw my error in the carbonator cabinet before the glue dried. Quick breakdown and re-glue, brad nail and re-clamp. Set up nice now.

Didn't have to go buy another quarter sheet of ply - :)

Just this minute saw my first lightning bug of season. Must be summer :dance:

Both of our sons, one's wife, and grandson were here at the same time for a few days. First time we've had both sons and grandson together with us at the same time. Since they were mostly working during the day, we were on grandson duty. One day we took a picnic lunch and visited RMNP. Saw elk, deer, big horn sheep, and a moose! Also a few stellar blue jays (very bright blue). First time for him seeing a the big horns, moose, and jays. He was excited about it, and we had a blast. Only the second time we've seen a moose on the east side of RMNP, and we have been there many, many times.

Today it was the sheer joy - and relief! - of watching the cherry tree we had to cut down (it dies) fall in the direction we planned it to fall, missing everything it could have damaged. Yay!

This Happy Moment happened a few days ago, but it still has me feeling great. It is somewhat related to the "What Strangers Think of You" thread.

After dinner I had a craving from gelato from the local ice cream shop. When I arrived and got to the line, there was a woman , probably in her mid 20’s-mid 30’s with two young girls, probably no older than 5, ahead of me. They were white. I was dressed in a polo shirt and casual slacks. The woman smiled and said hello, and I greeted her as well. The little girls just stared at me.

After about 10 seconds, the younger one turned to woman and said, pointing to me “Mom, look! It’s the doctor!”

The woman just smiled and said ‘No, that's not our doctor.”
Then the older one said “But he could be a doctor!"

I laughed and said "Thank you, but I'm not a doctor. But my brother is a doctor."

The older one asked "What do you do?"

I said "I used to work with computers."

She exclaimed "My dad works with computers. You must be smart!"

I laughed again, and asked the woman "Please, I would really like to treat the three of you to whatever you want to order, can I?"

At first she said oh, you don't have to, but then I said "Well, there was a time when little kids would think I was something very different..." She got a look that I knew she knew what I was talking about, and then said "Thank you, we'd be honored."

It was a nice moment, I did not want to burden her relating my experiences when younger of white children calling me not-so-nice racial things (and parents present doing nothing), or patients declining to have my brother examine them because he was not one of the "white" doctors. Just an example that, in my view, the world is not perfect, but it is certainly better in many ways. :)

Jollystomper,

That sounds like a nice moment!

As far as the folks who wouldn't let your brother treat them, he couldn't have helped them anyway - no one could. We all know you can't fix stupid!

Thank you so much for sharing this story. There is far too much bad stuff in the world these days and it's nice to hear a story about kindness.

Finishing my daily five mile walk, getting up the 8% grade to the cul-de-sac and then gliding down the gentle incline of my driveway to the front door. Always feel good when I finish that walk, get inside, and get to cool down, then have lunch.

I got to give a large sum(300+) of money to a perfect stranger, kinda. I went to the atm to deposit a $50 refund from my insurance. When I pulled up there's a message about the ATM will return the money in 49.. 48.. 47 seconds for security reasons press to cancel. I looked again and there are $50 bills in the tray, 6 7, 10? I don't know for sure but I can clearly see a minimum of 6. The person ahead of me left it in the ATM...... Nobody is around, what to do?

I'm headed to the cannibis dispensary and $300 would buy an ounce of 33% glueball and a gram cartridge. But "integrity is what you do when nobody is watching" hum... about 25 seconds left to wait.... I knew what I was doing just waiting about 10 more seconds pass and a guy pulled behind me and jumped out in a panic. He asked if that's my money, "no I'm waiting for the machine to pull it back for whomever left it here". It suddenly dawned on me he was the prior customer and when the ATM ate it.

I thought he was going to lose it for a while but I reassured him the ATM would credit his account for the aborted transaction. So he was only getting his money back that I was too honest to steal. I'm glad I was there and not someone who might have done otherwise.
