Travel hopes 2021

My DIL is going to Poland on the 6th and is a dual citizen. She has to take COVID tests at both ends and coming back she has to go to the airport 4 hours early to take a test before boarding the flight back to the states.

Not sure which I detest more American or United but both reside in "ONLY IF ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER OPTION" category. Quote covers "sins" of both carriers and staff who tend to be absolutely indifferent to passenger's needs.

We flew American Business/First class the last three trips from LAX to FLL return. I would rank them well below Jet Blue and Alaska (Virgin America routes) but above United and Delta. The only reason we flew American was the price that was less than half of what Jet Blue was charging and the flight schedules. Delta has made some effort purging their fleet of old dilapidated planes during the past year. United is about the worst airline you can fly. For overseas flights we fly European carriers only. We flew United and American once and they just don't compare with Lufthansa, Swiss, Virgin, BA, Air France, or KLM.

I'm with you, only for me United is the absolute bottom, and American is just slightly better.

I've always had outstanding luck with Delta, and Alaska Air is usually excellent as well.

Unfortunately, most of us don't really have that many options. It all depends on which carriers serve your nearby airports, and which of them go to your destination.

For Europe and Asia though, it's hard to beat the Star Alliance network, for award travel as well on those international routes.

Yes, no question that international airlines are a whole different question. Some are fantastic, others are terrible.

We fly whomever has the cheapest rates . We have never had any problems with United (knock on wood ) We love KLM but just a little more expensive . We have flown Ryan Air who everyone in the UK hates and it wasn’t bad . The only airline we have had problems with was
Spirit Airlines. DW says she will walk before going Spirit again.

ca. 1991 office mate went home to India. He got stuck because of the Gulf war. Turned out the only way he could come back to the US was by going the rest of the way round the world. Ended up on Aeroflot. Don't recall the details, but he suggested they made all other airlines look good. No personal experience, but YMMV.

DH and I went to St. Petersburg, Russia on our honeymoon in 2003. I REALLY wanted to fly Aeroflot from a European gateway- how often do you get a chance to fly in an Ilyushin or a Tupolev? DH, the spoilsport, wouldn't go for it. We took Lufthansa through Frankfort.

I was originally scheduled to leave for Albania the day after tomorrow, flying through London both ways (one overnight). I moved that to August of next year after the UK enacted quarantine regulations that looked like they could change at any minute and not for the better. They should be subject to change, of course, but they were even vague as to whether or not I'd be subject to them as a transiting passenger. Glad I postponed and not only because of that- I developed a nasty decay and abscess under a tooth holding up one end of a bridge and am finally headed for the oral surgeon tomorrow.:D

So, I’m about to finalize payment on my Europe trip. But one last hurdle to verify and I’m having trouble.

Our flights are from US to Geneva, via a flight transfer change at London Heathrow. I’m having difficulty determining if any Covid requirements exist related to our transit through London. We will never leave the airport. Just change terminal/gates for the connecting flight. I can’t believe that would be an issue, but it seems it might be?? But the specificity about any requirements is at least confusing to me. The link I’ve looked at is attached. But does anyone know for sure what London Heathrow expects in this situation? Anyone recently done this?

Sure appreciate any help!

I just booked an Alaska cruise for this summer, it's not the best possible cruise as it doesn't go everywhere I want, but it was cheap at $1,600 for 7 days extended balcony for a couple.
Looks like the flight will cost nearly as much as the actual cruise without taxes and fees.

Looks like you need a negative COVID test but can transit through. From the section on "Transfer Passengers":

If you are transiting through the UK to another international destination, you do not need to quarantine or take a COVID-19 test on arrival or on day 2 and day 8; but you must present the following to your airline before departure:

Complete a Passenger Locator Form
Provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test (taken within three days of departure)

It gets messier if you stay overnight before your connection since then you're passing through Immigration. You have to quarantine if you're coming form a "red" country.

That brought back quite a memory. We were on a tour of China 30 years ago and had to fly between two cities when the train schedule didn't work out. I don't remember whether it was a Tupolev or an Ilyushin, but definitely one of those. No seat belts and the seat backs didn't even lock in place -- they just folded down at a touch so you really bounced around in even slight turbulence. It was only about an hour's flight, but honestly kind of scary.

Same scenario for us in December. Was planning on flying into LHR, stay a few days in London & train to France. If England looks dicey will pick up a commuter flight/transfer to France. Hoping they get this sorted before December. Rick Steves is optimistic about a "few" tours for the Fall/Winter. So that makes me feel better. He is booking for 2022 now but emailed a notice that he "might" open some limited tours in 2021.

Just got back from multiple flights. DEN was PACKED yesterday, so many people flying.

LOTS of people keeping masks off in the airport (or wearing below nose), and not just for drinking/eating. I saw an entire family doing this, but when they went to get on the plane, they put their masks on. They clearly knew the rules but decided to bend them until they had to get on the plane. An announcement had to be made during the middle of the flight to wear masks if not eating or drinking, and to be sure to cover both your nose and mouth.

No aggressive outbursts from anyone, but I can see how this whole issue could lead to some of the agitated behavior that has been reported on planes lately.

VERY glad we are fully vaccinated! We sure did test those vaccines on this trip, lol!

We wore our KF-94's while on the plane - SUPER comfortable! Thank you to whoever recommended them a while back!

I guess it varies a lot. We spent a good bit of time in SEA and ATL the other day and I was impressed at how nearly everyone was very good about masking.

I'm in Paris now. Flew over on Lufthansa across the ocean. They said you need surgical masks or some other kind, that I didn't get. Good compliance on board.

But I've been on buses and packed metro train cars, like people standing right up against each other. Almost everyone masked, though some were talking probably loudly to be heard over the train noise.

On the streets a lot of people unmasked, but pull it out to go inside of places.

So either my vaccination-induced immunity will hold up or it won't.

Even ate indoors a couple of times -- first time in probably 16 months or so -- though there are plenty of places with tables outside.

But then you deal with road noise from cars and such.

Have a great time in Paris!

Let us know how it goes.

Would love to eat outdoors in Europe and watch the goings on outside even with the noise, but unfortunately that’s where all the smokers go.

Agreed. Our flights earlier in the month to PHL and to DEN were great - good compliance by almost everyone.

This flight from DEN to Florida though was definitely not the same. Not sure if it just was this flight or if people are starting to get more lax about complying with the rules.

We have returned from our first real vacation in 18 months! A trip to Texas for sightseeing and a family wedding. Some of our observations along the way:

Airports: Crowded. Everyone was masked in the airports we used. We were a little nervous at first upon departure, when we arrived and saw the security line stretching almost the entire length of the concourse. It turns out for “social distancing” they had the line stretch out instead of using the “hairpin turn” method, so we had plenty of time to get thru before boarding. In general few were social distancing.

Airplanes: We flew Southwest. Everyone was pleasant, no fighting, no mask issues. On our departing flight, there were about 15 empty seats, so DW and I had our row to ourselves. Our return flight was completely full, but we lucked out. We were in the high “B” group but when we boarded, amazingly the 2 seat emergency row was empty, so again we had a row to ourselves (we were amused a a couple of folsk asking to sit by the window, and we had to point out “unfortunately, there’s not a seat there”).

Rental car: We used Hertz as I have a Gold Plus membership (thank you, Megacorp). The weekly rate was double what it cost us last August in Florida; it would have been triple had I not used some of my Hertz points. When the shuttle brought us to the Hertz lot, there was a single car (Impala) in the Gold section – no choices like in the past. The car was very clean, but after a couple of hours driving we kept getting warnings about the passenger air bag needing servicing, and its warning light would go one but back off for periods..

Hotels: We stayed at Hilton chain hotels in the San Antonio and Houston areas. Both had what seemed like a normal amount of guests, but there was definitely a staff shortage. Daily room cleaning had to be requested. They asked if we would mind picking up clean towels from the front desk instead of housekeeping delivering them, no big deal. They were back to serving cooked/buffet breakfasts. Both had a “please mask if you are not vaccinated’ signs. Houston the staff was always masked, in San Antonio they only masked when someone approached the desk. Both hotels had the plastic barriers up around the desk.

The most entertaining aspect at one hotel was the fledgling baby vultures practicing flying in the walkway between the hotel main lobby and pool. Vultures had nested there and the local folks said they were a protected species so once the nest was found it could not be moved.

Public behavior: Few masks and social distancing anywhere, but we did not feel "crowded", even at the sightseeing venues. We did not see any stores in San Antonio with a mask requirement. In the Houston area a few stores still had “masks required” signs. At the wedding

Sightseeing: No real restrictions at any of the places we visited. Signs requesting, but not mandating, to wear a mask of you were not vaccinated and to social distance. Rarely being followed, but we still felt safe.

In general we felt very comfortable. It was great to see my siblings, siblings-in-law, and many of my nieces and nephews in person after so long. The wedding itself was fantastic. We ate way too much Mexican, Tex-Mex, and BBQ so lots of walking the golf course and gym this week :).

We hope to make an international trip in July or August to visit other relatives, but that may be tricky due to the target countries rules so we are playing this by ear.

A year late, we did our annual trek from Paradise to the frozen tundra of the mid west. Oddly, it was quite a bit cooler than we expected for a couple of days. Already had T-storm and tornado watches/warnings. Now weather is "normal" hot and humid mid west. Also, some pollen issues.

We got to fly in a 787 on United. I think we paid maybe $30 for extra leg room. It felt like we were in the grand canyon as far as room. Not many empty seats on the plane, but due to folks wanting to cozy up with family, etc. we ended up with an empty seat each (we were in aisle seats across from each other.) It was very pleasant as 8 hour flights go.

Woman behind me sounded like she was going to cough up a lung - probably just a cold. DW said she wore her mask below her nose. At least her mouth was covered and I have not seemed to suffer any ill effects so far.

I think the flight attendants did about 4 sweeps in 8 hours. Otherwise, cart-elbow was at a minimum. No problems on the flight and we were right on time. Amazing.

Son picked us up at the airport and we have now gotten together with ALL the kids and grandkids (one born during Covid so only had seen pictures.)

Have seen lots of friends and have plans for many more. Covid isn't "over" here, but no one wears masks outside and few wear them inside. That's okay with me as long as no one is coughing.

One good friend is missing - lost to Covid early on. BFF from w*rk is having 50th anniv. celebration tomorrow. We missed ours last year - no plans to make it up. Holding out for our 75th. We'll only be in late 90's. It could happen.

I can confirm most of what jollystomper indicated about travel and the state of Covid - except we had no rental car/hotel. The "Beast" was kept going for 2 years by BFF. Unfortunately, it needed another charge for the AC to work. No big deal.

So far, so good. Big family 4th of July planned. ALL of us should be there. 1st time in several years all the kids/GK together in one place at same time. Should be fun.

Lots of "w*rk" to be done here. Stuff to clean out/dispose of. We're weeding out boxes of photos and throwing away old broken appliances and video devices, etc. Planning for our final glide path and trying to make it easy on whoever has to shovel out the apartment after we're gone. Oh, managed to get rid of the old 27" TV that weighed 100 lbs or more. We BTD and bought two very nice refiners (for our dotage) and asked the guys who delivered them to dump the old TV. We slipped them each $10 for their trouble. One more thing off the list.

Looks to be an eventful and busy summer. Feels so good to be "free" in a manner of speaking. Not sure about the "variants" floating around, but we're vaccinated and "careful."

Y'all have a great 4th and safe summer as YMMV.

Just got back from a two week trip to Alaska. Spent time hiking and exploring Denali Ntl Park, Anchorage and Seward. Enjoyed our time at each place. Still can’t quite get my hands around the scale of the mountain ranges in Alaska. Truly massive and awe inspiring. The blue glaciers and abundant wild life everywhere were pretty good too.

Next week headed to Cleveland, Ohio with newly registered nurse (she is taking her Registration test today!) to tour apartments and get her set for a new job that starts in August.

Then in mid-August, if we can cross the US-Canada border, I’m headed up to Canada for four days of bicycle racing on gravel roads through the Canadian Rockies.

And our year wraps up with a week in Cancun in November with brother and sis-in-law.

Business class fares to Europe are plunging once again. They are about $1920 return for fares from LAX to GVA from September through May 2022 on British Airways on the A380 or 777 from LAX to LHR and 737 from LHR to GVA.

We have been pricing flights to Athens for Sept. Prices are on par with previous years. Also to London, than Athens. London flights have never been less expensive.

Pricing flights to Mexico (PVR) in Nov/Dec. Prices on par with previous years.

Also pricing flights to Bangkok in mid/late Jan. Economy prices are down. On a par with what we paid five years ago.

Pricing flights in the spring to Morocco and return from Lisbon. Also economy. Never seen pricing this attractive.

We're seeing $1050 round trips in coach to many places, with some select weekdays in the mid $800's. Many of the flight itineraries are a little difficult until airlines begin flying full schedules on both sides of the Atlantic.

Unfortunately the Covid issue is still up in the air with Belgium & Netherlands to be a little "hotter" than some countries. We're not getting back into the market until there's a little more normalization and until the cruise lines get back into operation.

We are the same. If we can get to Greece and/or Cyprus in Sept/Oct we do not plan on buying a flight until 7-10 days prior to departure.

Too early for us to book at the moment with any degree of certainly re covid.

Our experience, based on prior years, is that prices will remain on par with 90 day purchase price. We are extremely flexible when it comes to date of flight, etc, and in some instances the gateway airport.
