Breakthrough club

Thank you, OP, for sharing your story in detail. I'm glad your symptoms were quite mild and your DW was asymptomatic.

The big problem is the folks who get mild symptoms and don't bother to get tested thinking it's just a cold or allergies, so they continue to go about their business and expose everyone they come in contact with.

I'm seeing multiple post-vaccination cases per week in urgent care. I'm quite sure the real number is far higher exactly because of all the people who don't bother to get tested when they get sick. There are also patients who do come in but refuse testing.

If you get any symptoms at all, get tested, or at the very least, quarantine for 10 days. Don't just assume it's not COVID and be out and about sharing it with dozens of others.

We returned from a cruise last week.
I know it sounds dumb, but when I booked it, cases in the USA were tiny and going down.
Then 2 months later it's way up..... , by the time we finished the cruise, cases were over 100K/day

We were careful (masked when out of the room, except to eat and out on deck) and fully vaccinated. Lots of others were not masked.

Upon our return, DW said she had a headache (not at bedtime  ) and maybe it was covid , maybe not
We didn't go for testing as we don't even know if we were exposed!

The CDC site for cruise ships has our ship as Yellow, but they refuse to release numbers and so we don't even know if anyone had covid from the cruise.

The absence of factual information from events, meant to not alarm the public, means I have no idea if I had a good change of possibly being exposed so I'm not going to get tested.

USG, if I understand correctly your wife never got Covid....did you guys employ prevention at all.

Some, I slept in another room as soon as I was sick - we always do that. Otherwise just keeping away from each other, though we were in the same rooms.

Can we not post media stories in this thread please? This thread was started by the OP to share personal stories.

Prior threads in this forum have been closed due to arguments/excessive commentary over media coverage. And it easily becomes a distraction.

Yes please. Let’s keep this thread focused on personal experience.

I do wonder about the lack of testing. I have seen several posts on Facebook by friends in the healthcare world that seem to dissuade folks from seeking care unless they have certain symptoms. I am not sure how widespread this message is or how it might be taken, but it certainly can't help in getting people to test. I does mention going to a community testing site, but it's in small print at the bottom. I attached one such post.

We have 6 of the BinaxNow tests now and will use them anytime we have ANY inclination we might have it.

OP--
Thanks for posting your story. Glad the vaccine and your antibodies did what they were designed to do--help recover faster and prevent a bad outcome!
No vaccine is 100%.

I was ill about 2 weeks, like a cold only just felt a bit more difficulty in breathing.
Tested for Covid, as my Dr suggested, primarily due to close contact with unvaccinated GS in daycare. Luckily, it was negative.

I will happily get a booster 8 months from my covid Dose #2, as recently recommended.

My household includes me, my wife and daughter.

My son moved out over a year ago.

On Sunday, August 8th we had my son and his girlfriend over for their usual Sunday visit. We are all fully vaccinated and have enjoyed being able to see them.

Woke up early Friday the 13th [emoji3525] and saw a text from my son's girlfriend stating she didn't feel good on Thursday, got tested and has covid. She became a nurse in December last year.

Started getting nervous. My daughter had complained of a headache on Wednesday night. None of us had any symptoms.

Got everyone up immediately and by 9am we're waiting in a long line of cars to get tested for covid. Took about an hour and they said we should receive results within 24 to 72 hours.

By Saturday afternoon we all got our results. All three of us negative!!!!!!

My son had a rapid test done on Friday and his also came back negative even though he saw his girlfriend later on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, my son's girlfriend who is 23, has a high fever, body aches, just plain feels awful. She said she has most of the classic symptoms except she still has her sense of taste and smell.

She then texted this past Sunday stating her father has covid. He was working in PA. We all live in NC. He had not previously seen her so caught covid somewhere in PA. Geeeez.

He was also fully vaccinated. He had some minor symptoms, nothing major. He is 60. He's also feeling better.

One thing my son's girlfriend said was she was so glad she got the vaccine (Moderna) because she can't imagine how much worse it could have been for her.

We're all so grateful this turned out the way it did. It certainly could have been far worse.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I suspect my older son (not the one traipsing through Europe, the one who works at a grocery store) may have a break through infection... He has a sore throat. No other symptoms... but he works with others (he's masked). He is waiting to get tested till his employer says he has to. I'm telling him to get tested now, regardless.

Breakthrough - while I was typing this he sent me a text saying he'd get tested. YAY.

For those of you getting test, where are you getting this done? The health department testing centers seemed to have closed down in my area. Are you getting tested at a pharmacy? I have some of the home test kits but a forum member who is a doctor says they are unreliable.

Hope he's OK and if it's Covid he recovers quickly..but talk about unfair, the one working away at home might be sick and the gadabout is out just having fun.. I hope your traveling son stays safe and Covid free...

Hi harllee

I see you're from Chapel Hill. Wake County has numerous drive through sites in Raleigh.

They're open Monday through Saturday now.

Also my son got his rapid test done at CVS. Took about 4 hours to get his result.

Around here, every urgent care offers testing for symptomatic patients, and some also test asymptomatic folks too. CVS does testing. I think some other pharmacies do too. Our urgent care also offers telehealth evals and if the provider feels you need a test, they can send you to a physical location where they just do a drive up swab. At least around here, you have many options for where to get tested.

USG -- Thanks for the report. Very interesting. I do have relatives of a friend who had breakthrough infections. They all had mild cases.

harllee -- Around here the urgent cares usually test. Also the Minute Clinics at CVS do testing.

Thanks to all for reporting your experiences. We have been fortunate indeed but it is good to hear how it went for some, and also the testing information. Super cool to have a box of tests, Alan.

The travelling son is getting regular tests because most of the hostels/nightclubs/some countries require a negative test in addition to vaccine proof. I think he's had 4 tests in the past week.

Harilee - my son is getting tested either through Kaiser Permanente (his insurer) or through the county testing sites (Los Angeles county). CA has reopened testing sites because of Delta.

My spouse and I were tested through Wvu medicine drive-thru. We came to N.C. for our granddaughter’s birthday and were here for a day and a half and they got a text saying that our granddaughter was exposed to two people with Covid at cheer. She was tested at urgent care and she was negative.

Nieces husband in UK was fully Pfizer vaccinated a couple months ago. Three weeks ago he caught COVID-19 likely from his workmate. Passed it to his 3 year old daughter and unvaccinated pregnant wife.

He had relatively mild symptoms - fever, tired etc. 3 year old had same symptoms. Pregnant niece had it worse. Was hospitalized, had low blood oxygen levels. Was given various steroids and had to call Dr 3x per day to report status once she came out.

Happily they all recovered and baby due Thursday 🤞🏻

I’ll get the booster when it’s available to me early December.

Not sure what the rationale is for you not getting tested. If you are not sure it is covid you got, isn't testing allow you to know for sure? Why care some population stats?

If you are on a cruise, you are exposed. It is pretty simple. Unless you stay outside and keep social distancing throughout the whole trip which I don't think anyone does that.

Our local hospital runs a drive-up testing location, and runs the test at the hospital. It is only open 7-11:00 a.m., but if you get there early you get the results the same day. I got there after 10:00 a.m. and got the results first thing next day.

One nice think about being retired, is that we can just stay home when sick (whether it is a cold, flu, or even possibly very mild COVID). I know most people probably don't take advantage of our retirement to do that, but we do.

In early July I got sick and it was pretty mild. I had a very runny nose, some mild aches and pains that might have been normal due to aging, and mild fatigue. Nothing alarming whatsoever! Certainly not enough to go to a doctor or get tested. But I stayed home for I guess a week, and didn't get tested.

When I was a kid back in the 1950's, staying home when sick seemed to be the standard thing to do. It makes sense to me, too. So, it's kind of instinctive to stay home and rest until I feel better, now that I don't have to work. It was frowned upon at most jobs but now I don't have to worry about that.

Since we are vaccinated, and no serious symptoms, testing would not change our behavior, stay home and isolate.
If we got sicker, I guess we would go get tested to eliminate/confirm covid.

As for the population stats, if I knew there was 0 covid on the ship, I'd feel it's probably not covid. If I knew 66 people caught covid on the ship, I'd believe it's very likely I was exposed.

You can be on a plane and not be exposed, and you can be on a cruise ship and not be exposed.

For example Carnival Vista just had an outbreak of 27 cases
26 were crew and 1 passenger, on a ship of total capacity of ~5,400
If everyone on the ship was exposed, they would have a LOT more than 27 cases.

It was handy to have some in. They are either free on the Internet or can be picked up at a many pharmacies. Only questions asked are your age range and if there is a particular reason you want some. They come in a box of 7 that fits through the letterbox.

So far our son has tested negative. I expect that if he and none of the other employees in his team test positive that they will be back in the office next week including the coworker that had the breakthrough infection.

So pleased to hear that your niece is okay. There has been a big publicity campaign here this past few weeks encouraging pregnant women to get vaccinated, including by the PM’s newly pregnant wife.

I had a concert scheduled with friends for Monday night, and we met for dinner before. The plan was to eat outside, but it had recently rained and the outdoor seating was not open. I picked a table near the door, away from other tables, and with good ventilation. At the concert, after we passed security, I put on an active, anti-virus N-95 mask for the concert. Only 1-3% of the crowd had a mask. The rest of my group did not. It's only been 2 1/2 days, so too early to tell yet.

i had cold symptoms same as you describe for same amount of time about a month ago, after attended an indoor music event. Another member of our party had same symptoms.

Never tested so who knows?

You’re not the only one, this is the reason if I get a booster shot, I want it to be a different brand or a reworked version, I’m not to get a 3rd shot of the same thing.
