Apple's New Product announcements 9-14-21

My moto phone is from 2017. If I am careful and don't get infect with pegasus spyware maybe I will keep an t for 3 more years or until its battery dies.

My macbook pro is company issue so I will just ask for an upgrade when the time comes

My other two personal laptops are from Lenovo. Either type of systems are great and I am open but pc laptops have better value and I am all for good values.

I tried tablet and ereaders in early 2010s but never felt I am into it. My phone is sufficient.

On another note, I was hoping the new Iphone would have a USB C connector on it, but it’s still lightning.

So when I travel, I need a USB C to lightning cable for the Iphone, a USB C to C cable for my IPad Pro, and now a USB C to watch puck for the Series 7 watch. Three separate cables for three devices. I wish Apple would just standardize on USB C for everything.
Apple has done that forever. Their choice of ports has always been more to the advantage of Apple (sells more adapters). You can't blame them, since it helps them build a wider moat.

I really like Apple products/eco system but I don’t need the latest thing. We bought iPhone 12’s last year upgrading from iPhone 6+’s - so I guess our next smartphones will be the iPhone 18’s. We bought two iPad Air 4’s last year, my third and DW’s second, so every 5 plus years. And I bought an M1 iMac a couple months ago, I expect that to go 6-8 years. DW will buy her first Mac laptop this year replacing a very old, very slow Dell WinPC. I’m not missing Microsoft Windows at all. And you couldn’t give me an Android product, but over a billion users happily disagree, and that’s fine.

As a kid I coveted the latest and greatest... more audio back then but couldn't buy all that shiny stuff with fidelity better than my ears could hear. Fortunately, by young adulthood, I internalized that today's leading edge tech will be common in short order and I've been cured ever since. I have an iPhone 8 now and am thinking about an upgrade...to the battery! Hoping it will last 2-4 more years. It does everything I need very well but at some point Apple will not support it or it will finally land wrong when I drop it. I really like the case and don't want a new phone as I may not find a case I like as well. I also don't really like upgrading my phone and re-logging into everything although its a lot better now than when you had to back up to iTunes and then restore the new phone from the back up.

When I replace it, I will likely buy the newest version as a hedge against obsolescence. I bought my current phone when I was visiting my family and my iPhone 6 battery expanded and damaged the phone* and I needed my phone when I was flying home. Fortunately, it was Thanksgiving and I got the Black Friday deal at Target (MSRP of course, but with a $200 gift card to Target).

* Apple did make right by offering to replace it but since I had already bought an iPhone 8, I sold the new one they gave me.

Does everyone else (anyone else) want to run out and buy the newest version of iPad, iPad Mini, Apple Watch and iPhone like I do? Does being retired impact your frequency of upgrading to the latest and greatest of their products?

Please do- I own the stock!:D

Never owned a Mac anything. I replaced my 5-year old iPhone 5 with an 8 2 years ago so I should be good for awhile.

Not an Apple Jail fan myself. Although all their marketing makes the products look really enticing .... for some, especially the younger high disposable income set.

My Samsung S7 has been so good, I have never needed to change it as of yet. It does everything I need and tons of stuff I do not. I am an Electronics Engineer, and when young had to have the latest of everything electronic. Things have changed, I like to think I got smarter. When my S7 Breaks, I will get the latest no doubt, as I do when anything we own gets past it's due by date.

I wonder how many folks here think the same? Especially those who buy a car an wait till it drops before they get a new one. Are you the same with electronics? Or do you just have to have the latest iDevice.

It takes a village, as they say. Some are thrifty, others like to help the economy. Depends on the day you ask.
:D

For those who may be curious, here is the whole Apple announcement from yesterday condensed into seven minutes:

Guess I am one that keeps autos and electronics until they no longer meet my needs -- 2012 MacBook Air and 2007 Honda. I am looking at replacing both fairly soon but no rush.

My 2013 Macbook pro is due for an upgrade soon. The speakers don't work anymore and not worth getting it fixed so I just use a bluetooth speaker when I need sound.
I plan to get the M1 with 8Gb ram and 512Gb SSD drive. I like to buy last year's product so hopefully can get a better price. Unless the new 14" one looks better.
For phones we use Motorola's.

I’m always interested in the new product announcements but I don’t think I’ll be buying a new phone at this time. Rather I think I’ll take my iPhone 8 into the Apple Store for a battery replacement (it’s getting called out in battery health). I like all the features of the 8 and am not much of a photographer.

I’ll hang on until iOS no longer supports the 8. It seems to be compatible with iOS 15.

I am not into the latest gizmo, so do not know about the latest smartphone capabilities. I always thought that because Apple was the inventor of smartphones and also has a large base of supporting fans, its phones would command the top prices.

Turned out I was wrong. When I was looking for a new phone recently, I was surprised to see some Samsung phones costing more than Apple phones. And there's this One Touch phone that sells for as much as the top Apple phones. Because the market is competitive, I have to think that the competitors' products have to be at least as good as Apple's, or perhaps even better, in order to sell for these prices. My sister-in-law who is really into these things and an Apple fan told me that Samsung phones got some more advanced features than iPhones do, without elaborating.

It is a really competitive market. Just recently, LG bowed out of the smartphone business, similar to Sony who had some very nice products but threw in the towel in the laptop business some years ago. And yet new guys keep appearing, like this aforementioned One Touch which is a joint venture of Alcatel and TCL (a Chinese company).

Everybody is on his toes. Continued success is not a guaranteed thing.

I understand everyone's reluctance to change from what works and to SPEND more $$ just to have the latest technology.

Since the "younger high disposable income set" includes our kids and grandkids, don't you feel that having the same technology as them in order to do FACETIME on their Apple Devices is worth some investment in the technology?

My 85 year old mom, who passed away in 2019 had an iphone and iPad primarily for those reasons as she would keep in touch with her grandkids and get to see her great grandchildren anytime without having to visit. I know there are other video technologies that accomplish this but it is so easy and seamless when on the same iOS Apple devices.

Just found out the wife is buying a new phone for our son. He currently has an I phone 10 which means I'll be witching from the 6 to the 10. My mother will get my 6 so is win, win for all. Mom's helper will get her old phone and they just moved down the chain!

FaceTime is awesome. And keeps working with much older iOS devices.

I have an EE background. I like to have the latest if it is truly innovative and there is a clear benefit. I don't see much difference in the past three (four?) iPhone iterations. Let's face it--when it comes to phones, something personal we use everyday, even if it costs $1,000, you will likely have it for four years making the per year cost reasonable.

Not an Apple owner, prefer the flexibility and customization of Android. Apple makes great products, but like you said you have to live in their ecosystem. I often joke that about 1 billion people are walking around with essentially the same home screen icon layout on their iPhones, same notification sounds, same ringer, etc. Still, they are so good, I could own an iPhone and probably love it.

I was fine with my four year old Google Pixel 2XL phone but was planning on getting the new Google Pixel 6 Pro when it comes out next month. I do like getting the best stuff but only if it is a marked change from the predecessor.

Alas, the Pixel 6 Pro was not to be. My 2XL camera started getting flaky last month, I need a camera, I couldn't wait two months for the 6 Pro, so I ended up getting a Pixel 5a 5G phone for $449. The 5a 5G is essentially the same as my 2XL except has 5G (which I haven't used), a much bigger, longer lasting battery (which I am thrilled to have) and slightly better camera (Pixels have the best cameras, even better than Apple.)

If you like Samsung you might take a look at the S20 Fan Edition ($449). It's been out for almost a year now. I almost bought one but figured I didn't want to deal with Samsung's OS, preferring to stay with stock Android. Plus Pixel camera is better. The S20 FE has rave reviews, would be a huge step up for you and it's priced right.

Yep, there is absolutely no reason to buy the latest, most expensive iPhone just for FaceTime. It works perfectly well on much older models, apparently all the way back to the iPhone 5! You could buy a used iPhone 7 for around $100 if you just wanted a decent phone that natively supports FaceTime.

My children don't like Apple phones, so we all use Android phones.

I keep in touch with them all the time, using Google Hangout. It's text, not video, and that's how I like it. There's no need for real-time video, as it is not like we don't see them every few weeks in person.

My youngest grand daughter showed me Facetime on her iPod Touch by introducing her gilrfriend (8yo) from the neighborhood. She is now in 4th year Uni!

The most interesting announcement was ios 15, looking forward to several of the new features in the new system upgrade, and the best of all it is free.

Same here. We don't need any new devices this year but iOS 15 looks like a winner.

Cars I’ll drive forever, but I enjoy new electronics if there is a benefit. This years Apple updates weren’t interesting, since it’s not a big change from last years devices. Even though the iPad Mini looked nice, but I prefer a bigger screen.

If they ever get an Apple Watch that can track BP, then I’ll upgrade immediately. As for the phone, I always appreciate a better camera. Saves me lots of money and hassle over getting a separate camera.

I am waiting to see the Macbook Pro updates. I’d like to upgrade to the M1 processor (or whatever is next). My current Macbook is only a year old, but I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about the M1 systems and I’m tempted to upgrade.

Oh, as for buying a new car, my last rental
car had Apple CarPlay which I enjoyed quite a bit. Makes it tempting to upgrade the car too. [emoji23]
