Covid Changed Our Neighborhood Dynamics...

One of my neighbors must have been running a fitness shop. When the lockdown happened, he moved a lot of equipment into his garage and I saw about 3 - 5 people (at a time?) using it as a gym. They sometimes exercise with loud music on. It raised my eyebrows when the music was blasting on Saturday morning around 9:00 am. The "shop" is still going on.

You would never know there was a pandemic in our neighborhood. Everyone continues to see each other and socialize. All is back to "normal" here. Annual block party is already planned for early November.

Our experience on the Pacific coast is that since COVID started nearly half the surrounding houses have sold. Prices shot up, locals took the money and ran, while those who bought were looking for a safe place away from the city. Now we know only a handful of people on our block.

In my 'hood it has settled into a Cold War with occasional flareups pretty much along voting lines. Red voters carry on like nothing is different while the blue voters for the most part continue lockdowns, cancelling get togethers, etc. But then when the two groups intersect, it can be hostile.

A few guys banned from the Clubhouse for pointing out the servers are supposed to be masked in the restaurant (they were not). And then a week later the place had to shut down when Covid ran though their staff.

People walking right by the big "Mask Required for Entry" signs waiting for a challenge.

Came closest in my life adult life to a fistfight last week over it. Wife is very germaphobe, so we do no play golf with anyone we do not know personally to have been vaxxed. We came to the first tee and some noob(regular staff knows this about us) in the Pro Shop grouped us with an out-of-towner from AZ. It was not busy so we told him "Go ahead of us, normally we would play together but due to Covid..."

He proceeded to melt down and have a screaming rant about "Fing Liberals in California, cowards, blah, blah" I kept telling him to just go ahead, nobody up there, tee off dude, you do you! He wouldn't let it go, it got real loud and ugly quick.

If you notice how many threads here have been closed, you have to realize that this is a very emotional issue. YMMV

Curious, if you wanted to tee off by yourself, why not just say you were waiting on somebody and tell the other party to go ahead. Why bring something that you say know is politically charged? There are literally a thousand different things that could have been said instead.

The pro shop assigned him to our tee time. He specifically said "I am playing with you" to start off. We then politely said the "Due to covid we prefer not to play with others." before we knew his stance about anything. "Nobody in front of us, why don't you go ahead. " I repeatedly told him to just go ahead, we will wait, no big deal to us. He insisted on making it a big deal. Sigh

No masks, no worries. Everyone in our neighborhood knows that life is a risk and living in continuous fear of a disease with a 99+% survival rate is not a way to experience it. Just returned from a neighborhood party and had a great time.

Just got back from the mainland. What a difference from when I left! Masks are again mandated indoors - everywhere. All the sports are played without spectators. Most business are again restricted (back to) 50% capacity. Not a fun time.

But maybe we will get through this soon. Numbers are beginning to look MUCH better than mid-summer (when we were gone.) YMMV

we are pretty rural here. I noticed at the new property that folks out walking dogs would stop to visit, chat us up as we are parked at an odd spot in front of vacant property. I get the vibe that it will be a welcome change for us. We are still going to be relatively isolated up on the back of the lot, but when we venture out it should be fun.

It’s sad but my whole family dynamic has changed and I am persona non grata….

….DH is not vaccinated….

……I will never wear a mask again unless forced been there had that just ready to have a life again…..

Just reflecting your words and choices back to you. Seems like the ball is kind of in your court, no?

I don’t know but be very careful who you alienate you may not like the results.

Alienating people whether family or friends who are not concerned or considerate about my welfare has never been a problem for me. Life is too short and they are no longer of any importance. :D

Cheers!

[-]We[/-] My wife, is having a yard sale today. (I'm as uninvolved as I can manage, which isn't enough) There have been well over 100 people and I have seen only one lady wearing a mask. I hope between natural immunity and vaccines we are getting towards the end of this!

only 1 mask out of 100? that would never happen in my neighborhood. North of Seattle.

I probably wouldn't mask at a yard sale either, it's outside, you can space out from others. I don't see that as a problem.

I'm in the redneck riviera, southern Alabama, AKA Panama City Fl.

It is getting more and more rare to see anyone in a mask unless it is an employee working in a consumer oriented business.

I see people in our area going overboard with their Halloween decorations as if they are compensating for last year. Our zip code is currently vaccinated at 86% (12 and over) with at least one dose and 72% fully vaccinated. We have attended a few outdoor parties at our neighbors. The party hosts have made proof of vaccinations mandatory for those attending in the RSVP. L.A. County has instituted some of the strictest vaccine mandates this past week. Although the vaccination rate for 12 and over with one dose is now 77% there are many zip codes where vaccinations are still in the 48-55% range. Vaccinated people are accepting that vaccines will protect them from hospitalization and the people dying are primarily the unvaccinated. Many hospitals such as UCLA have started terminating healthcare workers who refuse to vaccinate including doctors. I think that is a net positive as it eliminates unfit healthcare workers and quacks and in the long run will improve the quality of care. Employees from my last employer held a anti-vaxxer purge party yesterday after 53 employees who refused to vaccinated were terminated this past week. I was invited and did not attend. Companies are using the vaccine mandates to terminate problem employees. Things should return to normal in places where vaccination rates are high and hospitalization rates are low over the next few months.

I rarely see people outdoors masked here, and there are a whole lot of outdoor activity/outdoors festivals at this time.

In stores, maybe 1/2-3/4s are masked. I belong to two gyms. One requires masks for all activities, one doesn't require them for members, just for the staff. The mask thing is just confusing and haphazard here.
This area is still majorly on edge because of the riots last year. That's caused far more tension and change than Covid has.

Our area has always done pretty well in terms of COVID statistics. My county is better than the surrounding counties, which is a relief.

Currently I see about 5% of people masked outdoors, and closer to 10% in stores.

If it says mask required on the front door I put on my mask shoved into my pocket. If it doesn't say mask required I leave the mask in my pocket. If it says mask required unless vacc'ed, I leave the mask in my pocket. Just read the sign on the door.

I still see people with masks on in their own cars, driving down the road alone.

Mask on mask off, day by day and which county or city you are in. Always carry a mask shoved into your pocket.
