Product shortages in your area ?

About a week ago, I noticed that after I moved our upright freezer, ( I'm tearing up a ceramic tile floor on the first floor) it started making a different hum. Monday, DW gets a call from our farmer/rancher friend, and says that he has a half beef available, if we want it. We're his best customer over 25 years IIRK, the check is prompt and good. He also said that our hog was ready. DW said she was going to get a a new freezer. I laughed, knowing that there is a backlog. Well, damned if she didn't come home 2 hours later, with a receipt for a brand new freezer, one that was ordered and never picked up. The holding period had just expired just about the time DW walked in the door. Had someone been online and caught it, we wuld have been SOL. So, we have a new freezer coming Friday, as a backup in case the other one fails, anda place to put the new meat.

All processing is much, much faster. SSD was best upgrade I ever did, would not have a computer with only spinning drives again.

I really like my laptop with an SSD as well, but I read that SSDs do not last. I guess I will see...

back up.
back up.
back up.
I back up my personal files daily to two external USB hard drives.
Then every few months - it should be monthly - I image the entire hard drive.

Today, DW returned from the grocery store and said the cheese coolers’ shelves were looking pretty sparse.
+1

Last two weeks the cheese is gone. No Swiss barely any cheddar just(leftover) odd stuff is available.

Trek bicycles. I’m still waiting for the gravel bike I ordered in October 2020. Latest estimate is for delivery in January 2021 (but I expect it to be further delayed)

There was no pasta at my Aldis this morning… only pasta made from lentils and soy beans. The section was entirely cleared out, no ziti, spaghetti, elbow or lasagna noodles.

They’ve also been having trouble keeping the imported dark chocolate in stock as well… that’s been hit or miss for about 2 months. The kinds we like come from Germany and Austria.

We've noticed that on the chocolate DH eats a square or two a day of 85...it's MIA at our local Aldi's

Local Costco frozen section had virtually NO ice-cream products. Also no TP. YMMV

No pasta at our Aldi's too. Completely wiped out.

Employee stated they are having issues getting numerous items.

But TP & PT were plentiful.

Gatorade. Noticed the shelf was wiped out at Publix yesterday...bare, nothing. A quick google shows it's another victim though I don't know exactly why.

Interestingly, the pharmacist recommended we up our electrolytes when we got our jabs, I wonder if that's increased demand? We never buy it, but had started drinking some of the Zero sugar version since then.

We all thought hoarders were being stupid during the pandemic. Garages full of toilet paper. And remember the people who tried to hoard gasoline? All kinds of wacky stories with that one.

I don't think they're stupid. They're just folks reacting logically to what they're being told.

This week DW's car was in for regular automotive maintenance. The service indicated the front tires are approaching replacement time. their distributors cannot give them an ETA for the tires. They are likely in the containers off the west coast.Fortunately it is not urgent, and now that DW is retired she drives less than 50 miles a week. They have the tires on order for us. No need for a deposit, they said if for any reason we find the tire make/model somewhere else they will have no problem using our order for someone else.

Our car (we have only one) is 6 years old and on its original tires (46,000 miles) so this is in the cards for us, too. The tread appears to be adequate, but it's easy to tell the difference when driving in heavy rain. So it's time to order a new set and hope they are not too delayed.

No specific shortages, random things unavailable at local Kroger pick up. But I allow subs, and almost always get same or similar, just different company or size.
The one thing I have noticed is the availability to get tp and other paper product with pickup. Last year, you had to go into the store to get them. Now I can order it online and pick it up.
(although, maybe not for long, again :-/)

^ What tire brand?

Goodyear. The shop is trying to match the same model as the rear tires (which were replaced early last year and do not have an issue. They are a small local chain. Since we started with them early in 2020 they provide excellent service at a great price. We might be able to hunt it down from or go with something different from Walmart or Target, but the cost including installation would be higher, and we want to keep supporting local businesses like this one.

Hot and cold here on diet A&W root beer. DH loves it and I stock up when I see it. Local Safeway canned cat food shelves are just about bare. Just ordered a 3 month supply from Chewy. Wonder if that was enough .

Edited to add: Just received an email from the window treatment vendor that the custom Hunter Douglas shades we ordered won't be in until early January 2022. One of the windows is critical due to the way the sun hits the kitchen countertop this time of year and is blinding. I put off ordering these for years and now am paying for it.

I like Coke Zero Sugar. This past week, the local grocery store a few miles from our house had coke products on sale, but no Coke Zero. But about 20 miles away, at another grocery store of the same chain near one of the golf courses I play, they have plenty in stock.

Today another store in the chain about 10 miles from us that was out last week has them in stock again, still on sale.

We are likely in a phase where groceries are in stock somewhere, one just has to go into "hunting" mode. :)

Tried that once without luck and gave up. I will check the stores on my way home, getting lucky on occasion, but won't go out of my way to look for an item.

Mentioned no TP at Costco. They simply fill that space with something else and you wouldn't even notice UNLESS you were looking for TP. My point: At Costco, it's difficult to notice that the "problem" of empty shelves actually exists - there really ARE no (regular) empty shelves. They shuffle stuff around until you don't notice. BUT in the freezer section, they have nothing to substitute (fill in) for the empty ice cream treats. It was an amazing sight to see. Recently, it's been difficult to buy the same ice cream treat two trips in a row but at least the shelves were reasonably full. Last trip, there were half a dozen freezer units in a row that were just plain EMPTY. No hiding that! I half expected that they would have filled the empty freezer shelves with, well, ice or something. YMMV

They were having a sale on frozen air

Good questions. I’ve heard that a big part of the problem is lack of trucks and drivers to move goods.

Right, so as I said, why not use the military or national guard? It is clearly a national crisis on many fronts. And sure there are issues to be worked out with using federal resources at private companies. But we have a broken logistics system. I truly don't see why we can't work out how to address it with federal resources. I'm not a government-should-solve-all-our problems guy but I'm also not a we-should-let-stupid-problems-cripple-us guy either.
