Robocall Madness

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but yesterday was the day for STIR/SHAKEN technology to be in place to prevent spoofed robocalls. Not sure if this will mitigate all robocalls, but the number spoofing should be curtailed.

I'd forgotten that! I got a spam call at 7:46 PM yesterday. Haven't had one since. But I've gone a couple of days between spam calls before.

Interestingly, I can't find much in the news about this. Has anyone noticed a change?

Not today. I got 2 junk calls on my cell phone already, less than 2 hours ago and only 20 minutes apart.

Note, it will not necessarily reduce the number of spam calls, but is intended to address spam calls that use spoofed phone numbers.

Still getting phone messages from various outfits for late DW. She has been gone 4 years. Guess they don't check obits. And magazines too, with bills of course.

Three weeks later, no change. The robocalls still come in, on the cell phone and land line (mostly the cell phone). The car warranty scammers are the most common. Nearly all are unique numbers, so they are spoofed. I had 4 calls in one day a few days ago.

Looks like it's all a big waste of time, trying to rid us of these parasites, or weeds, or whatever you want to call them.

There are advances being made, albeit slowly. I noticed with the latest Android update, there is now a "screen" option when a call comes in which is a nice addition.

I would agree. I might not get them everyday, but did receive 3 in one day a few days ago and definitely at least one every couple of days. I would say 9 out of 10 cell calls are robocalls. Some don’t even say anything. Grrr

I'm on Android and downloaded a phone app called "TrueCaller" which gives me the option to use my contact list as a whitelist for my phone ringing.

I still occasionally get automated voice messages from scammers, but those are few and far between and easy to delete.

I don't really like the TrueCaller app otherwise, but it's working very well to block robocalls and scammers.

I don't have one of those fancy phones. I have only a low-end flip phone, one I use very rarely. It's mainly for emergencies, or if I am out and happen to need to make a call. I use it for texts once in a while, although I get plenty of junk texts, too.

If you are using Android, you should be able to use the "Do Not Disturb" feature. You can set it to "contacts only" which does the same thing the 3rd party app does. It's been around for a while, so you shouldn't have to have the latest OS update for it to work.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that complicates things for sure.

^Thanks for that DND thing. I looked in vain for that functionality, but I was looking at the phone app, not the general Android OS. I've uninstalled TrueCaller and am trying DND now.

Does anyone else get endless “AT&T Direct TV” robocalls? These scammers have been on a campaign for me for years and no apps or filters seem to stop them.

No, nothing from AT&T. But someone keeps leaving messages on my cell phone warning that the warranty on my 19-year-old pickup truck is about to expire.

I got one in voicemail (my phone is set to silence unknown callers), something about my Direct TV account. Of course, I don't have Direct TV.

Nor do I but their scammer’s calls are relentless. My phone sends them to VM, almost daily, but it’s still irritating. I wrote to the Hiya call blocking app people to see if there’s anything more they can do.

Anyone notice an uptick in robocalls claiming to be from Amazon, telling me I ordered something from them? Amazon has never called me about legit orders. Not sure they even have my phone number. Between them and the car warranty scammers, #)$*%#)$^(#$)(%#)$^(#$)^(#$)

Haven't gotten any calls from Amazon. But, I have gotten a ton of calls about car warranties & 50% off Direct TV fees. I stopped answering the phone.

My current flood of robocalls is from “The medical dept” and “The Medicare Dept”.

There is also a young lady who isn’t sure who her employer is; it shifts back and forth between BoA and Chase. Definitely the same voice.

Are you sure it isn't Rachel from Card Services? With the pandemic and all, maybe she's working from home and taking on contract gigs.:)

Not robocalls, but I routinely get emails about my “orders”.
Most robocalls are of the warranty variety.

I'm getting robo calls AND daily MULTIPLE texts from all kinds of scam artists. Fortunately, I have 3rd party software that actually recognizes spam texts and throws them into a folder and notifies me silently. Daily deletion of 20+ spam texts is going on. Calls come in as a RED SPAM warning so I just don't answer.

What a PIA!

Rachel is back , but now works at " The Auto Warranty Center " It was good to hear her voice again, and hang up on her. Been a long time, but I guess she still wants me.

Anybody get calls from people wanting to buy your home? If you play with them they'll request your bank account number so they can deposit then money.
