Gas prices are going up fast

What do posters her think would be the right or fair price for gas?

We farm and are concerned about the fuel /crop price ratio. Right now they are rising in tandem which isn't always the case.

The “right” price is the price that evens supply and demand and clears the market. However, gasoline is heavily taxed so the government has a large say in what the consumer pays.

Well I don't know what the"right price" is but usually the solution to high oil prices is high oil prices. The same is usually true on the low side. That old saying generally applied to supply and demand meaning they would kind of find some what of an equilibrium with each other. However in times of turmoil(war) things can get skewed quite a bit. I'm glad I kept one third of my oil stock but still would rather see relief for everybody.

We’ve been in Florida the past couple of months. Gas was $3.34 at Sam’s when we left Northern Ilinois. Looks like it will cost us in the neighborhood of an incremental $100 or so to get back home.

You don't farm for 50 years without understanding supply and demand. I was curious to see if posters complaining of fretting about the price now had a number that would reduce the complaining...

Maybe it’s like taxes? If you don’t complain they just go higher!

Gas is now up to what it was in 2007. What other expense do people complain about because it's the same price it was 15 years ago?

My post was not a complaint but a statement of two interrelated facts. I don't recall much complaining on this thread but mostly observations along with ideas to address it, but I won't say for sure that nobody complained.

I find it notable not because it's the same price now as it was 15 years ago, but because it has gone up over 10% in a week. If my food, college, utilities, medical care, or any other mostly required category went up that fast, I'd note that as well.

I wasn't here in 2007, but I complained to my coworkers! It was enough to get me to take the bus for a few months. They were irked since I couldn't stay late, had to make the last bus at 5:30pm. (Good excuse to get out, BTW.)

I can't help but notice that when gas prices fell a lot a few years ago (we almost went under $2 a gallon), our state elected leaders raised the gas tax a few cents and hoped we didn't notice. It worked. Of course, today with record revenues and a record surplus they can't find their way to lower the gas tax (or any other tax) by 2¢.

Do you mean your state elected leaders raised your state's gas tax? According to this article, the federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon, hasn't been increased since 1993, and is not indexed to inflation. Maybe the article is in error.

We need about 100 gallons to get back home on a road trip. Gas was $4.00 a gallon on our last fillup in Arizona.

Have a great and save trip home. So, lets say 100 bucks more for your trip home. I'm sure you feel the 100$ is worth it instead of being at home. My wife reminds me to do the thing now because there maybe the time you won't be able to go.

She is right!!

I haven't seen you much on the forum lately and was wondering how you were doing and now I see you been on the road.

Street, time to look into a new farm truck! Look at that Rivian electric one and read the test in Car and Driver magazine that was done running all over the woods.

No driving changes for me even though when I filled up (sort of) the truck the other day, it cost me $100. The truck has a 33 gallon tank and takes premium. The pump cut off when it hit $100... I had heard that some gas credit cards would only allow you to pump $100 at a time but never experienced it "personally"... When I drove away I noticed the gas gauge only showed about 3/4 full :).I guess I could have ran the card through again but that was enough gas for another ~250 miles.

Recall the limit used to be lower if prices stay up very long the limit will be raise, as it has been in earlier times such as to 100 in 2008.

Just told DW a friend of mine said he paid 4.19 per gal for gas. She said, oh well it's been higher! Luckily we only use about 300 gallons per year

I just paid $4.92 at a local Shell station today which was surprisingly cheaper than the other brands. The Circle K a few hundred yards away which is normally the cheapest in town was $5.29.
This time I filled the tank, normally I just put $20 in since I'm not driving that much these days.

Thanks, but actually my choice. The flip side of getting better and wishing to play against higher levels, is that the courts within 10 minutes of me have many more beginner/advanced/intermediate players which is fine for 1x weekly.

Ahhh OK. Well that's fair. You have options and can pay the extra for travel if it's worth it to you for the higher level of play.

Just happens gas went up 30 cents from yesterday - now $4.49/gal.

Not only did they hike our state gas tax a while back, which was already high, they set it up so that it would keep increasing automatically. Total cost is $4.49/gal now.

Filled up at Costco today. The lines were so long at the pump they blocked off a street at the entrance.

It was $3.49 at Costco. DH got in the car and said “that doesn’t seem right.” I reminded him that he had looked at the price at the corner station. “How much was it?” I asked him. “$3.78.” “And how much was it at Murphy’s?” “$3.58.” “Well?” I think he just hadn’t really realized the 3 handle until then - ha ha.

I went out to look at the odometer of the car I bought 14 months ago. Total distance of 4893 miles, at an average mpg of 30.9. So, I burned a total of 158 gallons in 14 months.

Illinois has been busy with fuel tax increases lately.

Haven't bought gas since August of 2018.

And my electric bill was $24 last month.

I'm really trying to increase my mileage by using all my "tricks" - especially avoiding rush hour. So far, this tank-full, I'm up 4mpg (from 24 to 28.) YMMV
