2023 Investment Performance Thread

I don't understand it but I'm not complaining. My usually fairly accurate models predicted a $X gain today. Final numbers came in a $3X on a 12.6 S&P.

A .73% gain on a fairly normal day? Up 12.5% ytd. Seems like it all came out of nowhere.

Highly unusual.

Checked from yesterday. Up 11.65% YTD. I’m thrilled. I like these end of year run ups because my Jan annual withdrawal depends on the Dec 31 retirement portfolio value. :D

OK - knocking on wood now!

My XIRR spreadsheet has me down 15.52% for 2022 and up 18.40% for 2023. Basically back to even.

0.8448 * 1.1840 = 1.0002

I had a similar situation. On Wednesday, which looked like a blockbuster day, I was up about $30,000. But then yesterday, which I thought of as just an average "good" day, I was still up around $20,000.

Anyway, not complaining, as those two days together basically paid for the '23 Charger I bought back in September. But, it just seemed a bit odd.

Hopefully today will be another odd day.

Makes the case for the futility of market timing. Blink and you miss out

22.07% on ~84/16. No complaints!

I am basically even with 1/1/2022 adjusted for spending.

2023 YTD +26.92%

2022 TD +1.43%

I came within $15K of matching my all time high from Jan 4, 22.

Dec YTD + 4.51%

2023 YTD +21.06%

If only 2024 turns out so well.

Early this year I rebalanced to 60% equities- mostly index funds- and put 40% into CD's.
The equities are up 25% for the year.

I'm happy with the outcome.- retired today. I wasn't comfortable with my previous asset allocation because it was all exposed to market risk. By shifting to CD's I was confident that I could safely retire and do ok even if the market dropped 50%.

Congrats on the retirement. Great way to start off the new year.

On our Schwab portfolio with an AA of 65.5/34.5 equity/fixed income we are..

YTD +4.89% ending January
YTD +3.34% ending February
YTD +5.50% ending March
YTD +6.18% ending April
YTD +6.34% ending May
YTD +11.06% ending June
YTD +14.64% ending July
YTD +13.07% ending Aug
YTD +10.20% ending Sep
YTD +7.99% ending Oct
YTD +13.98% ending Nov
YTD +18.40% ending Dec

Up 18.40% for 2023, I will happily and with grace accept those results. For the year 2022 we were down -15.49

IRR for the year was 8.28% on AA of 40/45/15 (Stocks/bonds/cash)

I listened to a podcast last night, Bloomberg Surveillance 12/29/2023, A Stellar Year for Equities.

The essence was, momentum continues in 2024, with double digit results, though not 20%, closer to 10%.

We're probably close to the 12/2021 high-water mark, but not quite there. Just wild speculation by me, and getting close to retrieving hard numbers.

Well, I guess it's close enough to the end of the year that all of my final totals have posted. Or, if anything does update, I don't think it would be enough to sway my results much either way. So, here goes...

1/31/2023: +7.08% YTD.
2/28/2023: +4.22% YTD.
3/31/2023: +7.18% YTD.
4/28/2023: +8.40% YTD.
5/31/2023: +8.96% YTD.
6/30/2023: +14.51% YTD.
7/31/2023: +17.96% YTD.
8/31/2023: +16.04% YTD.
9/29/2023: +11.04% YTD.
10/31/2023: +7.65% YTD.
11/30/2023: +15.65% YTD.
12/29/2023: +20.81% YTD.

I was down 20.51% in 2022, so this was definitely a nice comeback!

18.35% YTD growth.

17.9% on 63/37 portfolio

Erased -14.2% in 2022

Net worth up 16.7% mostly erasing what happened in 2022.

Jan '23: +9.5% lol. I'll take it. Don't expect it to stick around though.
Feb '23: +7%.
Mar '23: +13% 99% Stocks, dividends included
Ooops, I realize I missed April, and May
Jun '23 +24.7%
Jul '23 +29% Losing to Nasdaq but on par with my A/A since I have about 42% of the portfolio in Small/Mid cap and the rest Mega. I should really stop farting around and just go all MegaCap MGK
Aug '23 +26%. Went backwards a tad.
Sep '23 +18.5%. Went backwards even more... whee![
Oct '23 +14.1% More Whee!! Although as I post I've recovered 5.2%
Nov '23 +26.5% I re-allocated into AAPL a little more
Dec '23 +30.96% 100% equities. Literally only have like 6k cash as I plowed it all into the markets before the year ended. Cheers to 2024! Election years historically push markets higher so here is hoping.

Looks like everyone did quite well, any other 100% equities out there I can compare to? My DF is up 40% YTD with roughly 98.3% equity portfolio (and some RE investments). He did better than me because he holds more weight in MGK and QQQ than I do...and I had some small caps and mid caps that under performed the Nasdaq. I try to chase the Nasdaq best I can.

Since I actually started tracking investments:

2014: 33.42%
2015: 45.01%
2016: 12.04%
2017: 26.67%
2018: -4.43%
2019: 37.91%
2020: 37.15%
2021: 25.89%
2022: -27.92%
2023: 30.96%

Cumulative Total Return for the past decade +216.7 % and still in the accumulation phase for at least another 8 years. All dividends included less the contributions over that period.

Close the year with an all time high NW.

A little inspiration for the young dreamers, 10 yrs ago I had recently quit drinking after being a lifelong binge drinker and alcoholic. We began 2014 with just about $40,000 to our name. Today we are millionaires. IN less than 10 yrs we went from nothing, to something. If I can do it, anyone can.
