I turned 65 this year. My former employer (well actually they bought the small company I worked for after I left in 2006) is a furtune 500 company. They changed pension administrators this year. At the start of the year the prior administrator sent me notification about my pension (including...

Well for the last four years I've checked the last week of November and my SS statement is usually updated with the new updated benefit amounts. If not, wait a week and it should be by then......

SS Start and COL increase question

Thanks for the reply Wizard. As I stated in the OP, this is based on recommendations from Open Social Security. I as the high wage earner will be waiting till 70 to collect on my record, and allow my wife to collect on that amount if I pass first. We are lucky to not need (but certainly don't...

SS Start and COL increase question

OpenSocialSecurity says my DW should start SS around the beginning of 2023. Anticipatining a large COL increase in SS for next year. If she claims starting in Dec 2022, her first check would be in Jan 2023. Correct? Will that check include the 2023 COL increase or would she just expect to get...

I haven't made a new friend since high school

I was a bit of a workaholic during my pre FIRE days, so I did not have much of a social network. When it became time, my DW and I looked for a brand new 55+ community in the area we wanted to live in. Sold our old home fast and got an apartment close to the new development. While the home was...

Eastern Pennsylvania area and general moving questions

We retired to the Lehigh Valley 7yrs ago, from a NYC suburb. Great Health care options between St. Lukes Network and Lehigh Valley Health Network. There are enough flight options out of ABE airport such that i tend to use it for domestic travel and use EWR for international. I think I would not...

    Who's your broker?

TRowe for nearly 30 yrs. Personally, I like them as they NEVER bother me. If I want something I ask and they respond very quickly.

    Gifting to adult children

Very interesting topic. We have two children mid 30's. One is married and doing very well, the other not as much as the Covid-19 situation has greatly affected employment and earnings. I started gifting 5K equally in 2019, 10K each in 2020, but have given the more challenged offspring another...

eFile acceptance - IRS bogged down...

Just got an email from TT to re-check my status since it was rejected by Feds. It appears that TT had a bug in Early Feb version of TT involving stock sales. They acknownledged it was there problem and that I should just re-transmit the return (they internally changed the status to allow it to...

I e-file my TurboTax return on Mon 2/1. Even got an email acknowledgement from them "Welcome to the front of the line. Way to be an early bird....". Just checked and the TurboTax system shows my status as "Pending" "The IRS may have delayed processing of returns. Check back in 48 hours."

PSA: Just found out OH taxes LTCG as ordinary income

Also in PA, if you can keep your taxable income below 13K as MFJ, it is forgiven if you file PA Schedule SP. Each year I harvest just enough LTCG's to get some 100% tax free income. (All my other income is untaxed in PA)

    Active vs Index Funds

I can't disagree that index investing have outperformed the actively managed funds over the last decade at least, but starting today, would you still prefer to put new funds into the "overall market" vs ones that analysis says should perform better in the next 6-12 months ?

    Active vs Index Funds

I know that the majority of investors on this (our) site prefer index fund investing over actively managed funds, but under the current situation, do you feel that analysts can better select stock portfolios that will perform better under these stressful conditions than the "overall" market ? At...

Pros and Cons of 55+ Active Adult Communities?

We bought into a new 55+ community of Single family homes (but ownership is condo so we only maintain the inside). Being a new community, it was very easy to establish new friends as we were all in the same boat. We definitely have taken advantage of the social opportunities. Prior to...

    Downsized and re-employed ages

RIF'd @ 53, then took less pay at another job for 18months because I thought I'd like the work. Then that job petered out and I stayed out as I felt I could get by with what I had put away. 6 yrs later my net worth is about the same and am looking forward to SS and pensions in a few more years....

Have you tried to advise friend on investing?

I believe I live something akin to a "Millionaire Next Door" lifestyle. I've got enough, but really don't have any impetuous to spend it on stuff. Since I retired early, people/family/friends must think I must have an insurance settlement of something (?) - you surely can't be retired at 55 from...

    Venting about FIRE

I have one sibling that matches yours exactly, but his 4 siblings have had the face to face and told him that we were not going to continue working just so he could have an "early retirement". Since then he has stepped up and managed "ok". Yes, we would probably help again somewhat when he...

How do you live after FIRE ?

DW & I 61 now. We manage our income from IRA's and dividends to 64K MAGI and still get a $0 ACA BCBS bronze plan because of high cost silver plans in our area. Embarrassing. Any extra needs are covered from after tax saving withdrawals.

Poll:2019 Federal Tax refund - more or less? poll

Refund was large, but I can pay my ACA HI bill with a credit card. I decreased my Advanced PTC and paid more out of pocket via CC, as I was playing the credit card bonus game last year ("Spend $3000 in 3 months for 100,000 points") on multiple credit cards. Just did it the last 5 months of the...

Selling our home- agent or no agent

I'm sure my experience is different than most, but I was happy with the outcome. I received an unsolicited request from a RE agent for an appraisal on my house around six months before we were thinking of listing. The value range she came back with was rather wide but basically in line with...
