Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

I introduced myself years back, but I didn't know which sub-forum to post this question. If the admin needs to move it, I thank you in advance. I turned 63 in January. First child is now out of college with a good job (just got promoted yesterday, as a matter of fact) and he's still living at...

Format changes to Social Security Statement

I realized today I hadn't checked ssa.gov in a while for my statement. I see the format of the doc has changed for me, but when we log in to my wife's account, her doc format is still the old version. (I'm 60, she's 53, maybe that's the trigger?) Just curious, no biggie.

21st Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey of Workers

Title says it all. Too much to summarize, you have to take a look yourself (I did search to see if this was posted already....didn't find anything but apologies if this is a duplicate post). Direct link to .pdf...

Not stopping once FI goal is reached - Kitces & Carl Ep. 66

Seems to be a common occurrence with clients, per Michael Kitces and Carl Richards: People who have definitely achieved their FI goals (and then some), but can't seem to quit the accumulation phase. Good general discussion between Kitces and Carl and their approach with some clients who fit this...

My Social Security website interface changes (for the better!)

I'm not sure if anyone has called attention to this... I just received my annual reminder to "Review Your Social Security Statement", and so I logged in... Was happy to see an updated website! https://www.socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement

Things quickly change (mentally) when you approach 59 1/2...is it possible?

I will pass the 59 1/2 yard marker this coming July. The atmosphere/morale at work has changed radically in the past two years, as has my attitude. I've been at the company ~19 years; 25 in the industry. I *think* I have a workable plan to pull the trigger on ending my employment in July, but I...

    Self-sabotaging FIRE - A PostSecret-like confession

Since 2013, I have spent ~ $31,000 on vintage film camera equipment. :( I have sold much of it back (at a loss, for sure). In hindsight, I wish I had trimmed down the mortgage using that cash. It was like I had to go through the process to get it out of my system; it did teach me many things in...

Unclaimed.org - hat tip to Nords

So I read Doug Nordman's excellent recent post: https://the-military-guide.com/lessons-learned-settling-my-fathers-estate/ Near the end he mentions the site https://www.unclaimed.org/ I went to the site and searched several states for myself, DW, and some deceased parents and in-laws. The...

"Your estimates are based on the assumption..."

Hi All, From ssa.gov, when I log in and look at "Estimated Benefits", there is this: "Your estimates are based on the assumption that you will earn $xxxxx a year from now until retirement." I'm 58. So if I retire tomorrow, or next summer, does that mean that the SS benefits I would receive at...

    More $$$ = w*rk attitude problem

My wife and I really only started saving saving for retirement a little over 15 years ago (why is another story), when I started with my current employer. I was 40 then (accepted their offer about two weeks before 9/11). With the recent death of a relative, who left everything to my wife, and...

Giving up (small) dreams to FIRE

I have made a hobbies of film photography and Super 8 film moviemaking. Unfortunately, the $$$ required for keeping BOTH of these related pursuits and working towards FIRE do not make sense or add up, based on my projected income until and after retirement. I can keep doing still film...

Taleb:How to legally own a person

Great article about working for a company, what it means to be an employee these days, and working for 'the man'. Relevant for those trying to escape the rat race... No solution offered, but it sheds a little little light. Sadly, I see myself profiled in the article. Nassim Nicholas Taleb: How...

What paid subscriptions do you have?

Digital subscriptions, that is.... Today, after years of conscientiously limiting myself to 15 free NY Times articles a month (when logged in to their site) I finally caved and signed up for their "basic" plan (with a promo: the first 8 weeks free and $1.88/week for a year after that; cancel...

2015 income is reported to SSA.gov when?

Anybody know when 2015 income is reported to SSA.gov? Their website still only shows my 2014 income. I got a decent pay increase last year and would like to see how it affects my projected benefits. Filed taxes in February it's now June...

Free FICO score for BofA cards

I just spotted this blog post, and since I have a BofA Visa card, I enrolled and was able to see my FICO score instantly (TransUnion). I was pleasantly surprised but extremely shocked to see I had an "Exceptional" (their word) score of....849!!! This is the only place I would brag about such...

New Retirement Calculator in Personal Capital

It uses 5000 Monte Carlo simulations.... Anybody have any initial feedback or impressions about it? For me, the 10th percentile says I'll run out of money by the time I'm 84. Worth looking at, at the very least.

Brother opened eyes to possibility of ER

My brother opened my eyes to the possibility of ER. He retired two years ago at the age of 55. I consider him, and all others with a work history similar to his, an anomaly. He graduated with an engineering degree, and, straight out of college, was hired by a California defense contractor. He...
