I cannot understand the TV dialogue

I have a Sonos Play1 that I sit on the table right beside me. That way the TV isn't loud, and I can here it just fine. The Sonos volume can be controlled independently of the TV volume. Works great and there's no audio delay.

    current favorite youtube channel

Matt's Off Road Recovery A guy that owns a towing business in southern Utah and films himself pulling people out of precarious situations using an old, 200,000-mile Jeep Cherokee. The scenery is amazing, and he's very clever at getting people un-stuck.

    When to Drop Collision Insurance

As an anecdote, I had a car that was worth about $6,000 and I haven't had an at fault accident in decades. I decided it was worth the risk to just self-insure, so I dropped the full coverage to save a little bit of money. About 3 months later I was hit by another car and my car was totaled. Even...

    The countdown has ended

Thanks for the encouragement and the advice. And I do suspect that once I start having all this free time to do as I please, that the 1 week per month will feel very painful. But it's a way for me to ease into it and relieve some of the stress of "do I really have enough money for this?" even...

    The countdown has ended

And this. The day has finally arrived. I'm not a new member of the forum, but I am a newly retired member. I'm taking 3.5 months off and then I'll work 1 week a month. I know technically that counts as "partially retired" but hey, it's good enough for me. I get to work as much or as little as I...

Might be FIRE (semi retired) soon getting scared to make the jump...

I'm not sure what specialty you are in, but for me (also a physician) I decided to go to part time, working 1 week per month, rather than 100% retirement. That gives me a little bit of income/safety net. It also keeps my head in the game just in case I decide that retirement isn't for me and I...

This is why we have Ring doorbell

I like my Ring doorbell. I have it linked in to a Samsung SmartThings hub, so when the Ring detects motion between 9 pm and 6 am, it turns on the living room and kitchen lights for 1 minute and then turns them off.

    Strange count downs...anybody else?

    What led you to retire??

I became rather bored with my career (physician). Then our hospital system was acquired by a large national healthcare system (megacorp) and they ran things by spreadsheet. "Supervisor X only has 10 employees, and the spreadsheet says supervisors should have 20 employees, so we are combining two...

    Pulling the trigger but...

I have a countdown timer as well, but I find that it actually is more harmful to my state of mind than it is helpful. It keeps me focused on the fact that I don't have much longer, but that I'm also not quite finished yet. It makes it seem like the days pass very slowly. What I find to be more...

    Ford Focus and Fiesta

I had a 2015 Focus I had a 2015 Focus and really liked it. There are several recalls so you’ll want to get those taken care of if you get one. I thought the car was relatively quiet and comfortable for an economy car. Also fun to drive. My cousin worked for a rental car company and told me the...

Sensing resentment from working people, how to respond?

I’m a physician and retiring in February, 2020 at age 49. Most people that I tell just can’t wrap their head around me wanting to retire early. When they ask why, I tell them that I simply lost interest, in being a physician, which is true. “Physician” was always something that I did, like...

    Downsizing your house

I did the exact same things 18 months ago. The only difference is that I’m single, so there was no spouse to have to convince. I moved from 4,000 sq ft $600k dream house that was just too big to 1,200 sq ft 1960s ranch. My 16 yo daughter loves the smaller house because it requires that we...

    Hi from four year fire

I sat my daughter down and explained that when I die, she gets everything. She is free to do as she wishes with the money. I also explained that it’s possible that she can withdraw 2-3% per year and it will last forever, even to pass along to her kids. Depending on the amount of money I leave...

Rant - The annoying things about work are getting more annoying.

OP - Update Just thought I would update everybody. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. As people have said many times in many posts, I don't owe the company or my partners anything. They will survive without me, and if I wasn't benefitting the group, they would cut me loose in a...

How do you survive last x months... Excruciating

I'm in the same boat. Mentally, I'm done. I'm ready to go. But it takes a while to replace me, and I just don't feel good about walking out and leaving my partners in a bind for months until they can recruit and hire a replacement. The replacement is hired but won't start for 3 months. Then it...

Rant - The annoying things about work are getting more annoying.

Thank you for letting me vent. Each of you have valid points. As always, the situation is slightly more complicated than what I can convey is a post on this forum. Bottom line is that yes, I could walk out and never return. And yes, if the behavior doesn't stop, then I will find a polite way to...

Rant - The annoying things about work are getting more annoying.

Okay, so this is just my rant. No need to reply or offer suggestions unless you just want to. Mostly I just need to get this off my chest. Last October I gave my 60 day notice. They talked me into staying until they can replace me. The replacement has been hired and will start in mid-June...

For anyone doing their taxes via software, double-check the forms and worksheets

Yes. Go through the final return line by line. Last year I managed to import my TDAmeritrade data to TurboTax twice, resulting in a $3,000 overpayment. I'm not sure how I did that, or why TurboTax didn't catch it. Definitely user error on my part, but I've become accustomed to software that...

Should I consider a Turbo for my next car?

I have had 7 turbo cars model year 2001 or later. Never had one problem regarding the turbo. I even had a 1986 Nissan 300ZX turbo - never had a single problem. Never took any special care regarding cool down. In my experience the turbo systems have been 100% reliable.

Certified Preowned or Carmax 2015 Lexus

I would go with Carmax. If you’re worried about not having the CPO, then buy an extended warranty from Carmax. Or call Lexus and as if you can buy it from them.

    eat loss on new eyeglasses

I also have a difficult time getting lenses. I finally started seeing an old school ophthalmologist (no fancy retina scanners and such) who only uses one optician in town because he has a good history with him. So I think it’s important to find the right combination of doctor and optician...

Early Retirement Is Overrated: Here’s What We Plan to Do Instead

From her article: “So, for now, we plan to keep on working and saving … and working and saving. The more we can invest now while we’re young, the more confident we’ll feel when we decide to stop working later on.” Isn’t that EXACTLY what most on this forum are doing or have done?

New Yorker: Why doctors hate their computers

Nah, I'm not a casualty of the EMR and/or ACA. They're annoying, but all industries have their annoyances. I'm just bored and ready to do something else for a while.
