Finger Lakes region - New York

My 4 siblings and I (and spouses) had a wonderful trip to the Finger Lakes area in July. We stayed in a VRBO house near Canandaigua Lake. There is lots to see and do all around, we had some small groups going different places each day. One of the best was local hikes near Naples and lunch at the...

Heathrow to Central London Transfer: Uber or Taxi?

The Sofitel London Heathrow is a lovely hotel and is connected to termial 5 (the international terminal). Plus the Heathrow Express is right there too. I like your original plan.

    Cell Phones Overseas

+++ positive on T-Mobile. We have used our TMO coverage in Africa, Mexico, Costa Rica, and multiple European countries absolutely trouble free and as advertised (zero extra fees for data, and minimal charges for voice calls that are not via wifi - we do most international voice with wifi...

Diaries, Journals, Logs - do you keep them, and why and how?

I keep a hiking journal. Notes of specific trails taken (my favorite local mountain has dozens of trails that interconnect). I note the weather, trail conditions, distance, time, # of people/dogs encountered, any unusual animal sightings, interesting things to look at, ways to modify in the...

Compensation for flight delay from the EU

I filed a claim in mid May directly with British Airlines for an airline caused travel delay of a flight on April 30. Received word today that I will receive 1200 Euro compensation (600 pp). I'm very pleased with the response time to my claim. Hopefully the cash shows up promptly too!

Do we still go to concerts? What concerts have to attended in the last few years?

I enjoy a lot of concerts at mostly small venues in the Seattle area. We saw the Temptations last night (still great!), and the Seattle Rock Orchestra performing Beatles music today. On tap for this summer are some outdoor concerts: John Fogerty, Steve Miller Band, Chicago. Maybe Chris Isaac if...

Cell Phone Service - Masa Mara & Ngorogono Crater

We were in Tanzania last August. We had T-Mobile cell service all throughout Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Zanzibar. Also, all of the camps we stayed at had good WiFi. No issues with comms at all.

    Italy!

We are just back from a fabulous 3 weeks in Italy. What a beautiful country. The art, the history, the food, the wine, the people, the scenery - nothing but fabulous! It was my first visit, and most certainly not my last. For those interested in crowds & current Covid restrictions. While we...

    Twice boosted, Covid positive

Agreed, my pharmacist said the Pfizer boosters are full dosage, whether 1st or 2nd boost. I received the 2nd booster as soon as I was eligible. Once Omicron reared its ugly head, I changed my thinking from: the vaccine will prevent me from getting Covid, to: I will probably get Covid anyway, and...

    Twice boosted, Covid positive

I believe the 2nd booster amped my immune system to fight off this covid infection. It had been 6 months since my first booster when I received my second. With my out-there travel, and underlying conditions, I'm doing all I can to minimize my risk. Works for me. I'll glady take a vaccine jab...

    Twice boosted, Covid positive

I am very grateful to be at the tail end of a very mild Covid infection. I had received my second booster (Pfizer) this past month and last week tested positive for Covid (first positive ever). I had been experiencing cold like symptoms and decided to use one of home tests, positive! Went and...

Hip/groin injury - frustrating - no real diagnosis or solution

Last year in January, I injured a hip flexor (pain in groin area, mid thigh). Took about a month to diagnose correctly. Similar to your pain on uphill, but also very sharp stab of pain when standing up from a sitting position. I am an avid hiker and entered a course of PT. It did the trick and...

I recently read The Lincoln Highway. It's a terrific story with great characters. I highly recommend it.

Also, if time - pop into the Met Museum (goes with a quick visit to Central Park)

    New York City

I second Ginny: 911 Museum and a play (or two - and splurge on good seats). The 911 museum is fantastic and sobering, brings that horrible day to life for those that were not in the city that day.. My local NYC friends won't go, even now - it's too raw. If you have time, add the Stanton Island...

    Downtown Portland, OR

I recommend you check out Seattle. While Seattle is dealing with homeless/drug issues, it is no longer having a problem with civil unrest, and the city is beautiful once again. Portland is still struggling with basic civil unrest issues. Outside of Portland, Oregon is great.

    5 months to go...

My exit was similar, with a reassignment of my former team to two different managers (one a newbie). I think it made the transition a lot harder than it had to be. I got panicked calls from former staff for a couple of months. But they petered out when they realized I wasn't coming back! Now I...

Does my ideal vacation rental exist?

Check out Cannon Beach, Oregon. It has a beautiful huge walking beach and a lovely artsy town with lots of restaurants and shops. Best coffee and orange chocolate chip scones in the world at Sleepy Monk in midtown.

    Anyone Considering Cancelling Travel

We're just back from a fantastic trip to Tanzania. Two weeks of safari and some beach time. It was excellent in every respect. From what we hear, the safari excursions are still ramping back up, so relatively few other safari vehicles In the parks & conservation areas. Three Covid tests involved...

Airline rescheduling and rental car fears

Sad to say, pre-paying for a rental car, does not guarantee a car will be available when you arrive to pick it up. I was bitten by this twice, both at O'Hare, with different rental companies (non Covid times). Your best bet is to stick with one rental car agency, join their club, and gain...

    Visiting Savannah and Charleston

Does applying for a credit card for free travel really work?

If you're in an Alaska Airlines travel area, look onto the Alaska Airline VISA card. Annual fee of $75 and you get a free companion fare anywhere they fly. Between my husband and I, we have 3 cards and save many $$$ on trips to Hawaii and Costa Rica. Both my daughters have one each and make...

    Costa Rica

I like to use the ILT transportation company for transportation to & from Liberia Airport. They are very professional and fairly priced. Driving is easy and interesting though in Costa Rica if you want to rent a car.
