Do We See Reality as It Is?

Our eyes have a "blind spot" where receptors are absent due to the optic nerve passing through the retina. We don't perceive it because the brain fills it in by interpolation. Add in all the downstream processing like object categorization and recognition and we really are experiencing reality...

Where to Live in Seattle or Portland Area?

Current timeframe has the north expansion to Lynnwood ready in 2024 and Eastside expansion.in 2025. There are more trees north of Seattle which would make for cooler housing but it's getting hot enough for some active cooling. We're looking at replacing our gas furnace with a heat pump.

    Washington/Oregon member meetup?

Astoria is a super cute town. We stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel. You can access the riverwalk for a stroll or hop on the trolley for further explorations. The Maritime Museum is fantastic. Astoria Column park provides great views and Oregon's beautiful beaches are a short drive south.

    Improving endurance and flexibility

I've been using a wobble board and it has been great for balance and integrating all of the little muscles that don't get enough work from a sedentary lifestyle. It's also vastly improved the ankle and calf inflexibility that's bothered me my whole life.

Searching for a way to parse binary files

Elixir (and Erlang) have an elegant method for binary parsing via pattern matching. Once you get a handle on the syntax, it's a pleasure to use versus implementation in other languages.

    Skiing after 60+

I contacted support hoping to get credit for another day but they declined. Turns out Alpental is always closed on Mondays, ugh! Apparently each area (Alpental, West, Central and East) has independent hours and it's on the ticket buyer to double check the area they desire is open when...

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

You can wave away each as opinion but you'd be on the wrong side of the evidence. If you don't believe the science, do you think the military or the insurance industry are engaging in fantasy with their climate assessment and mitigation of effects? If you discount them as woke then I don't...

    Community College Grads?

Nice! I was not ready for college and bailed after a poor freshman year at a 4 year institution. Moved home and worked for a couple years taking some credits at the local CC before finishing my 4 year degree at an in-state college. I also had some great teachers and classes at CC and I was...

    The Electric Vehicle Thread

An educated perspective would acknowledge the cost of delaying the transition away from a greenhouse gas polluting economy of which the transportation sector plays a large role. The dollar figure is eye-watering not to mention the effects on bio-diversity, food/water security, extreme weather...

Elon Musk Begins Mass Layoffs At Twittter

Musk's twitter takeover has been a fascinating trainwreck so far. After waiving due diligence after his memey $54.20 bid he very publicly trashed the company via tweet to try and renege / lower the price. That went over like a lead balloon with the court in Delaware and he was forced to honor...
