I Don't Want To Retire Early!

I may be one of the few people here who seems to appreciate the point that H*cus is trying to make. I think it is true that ER does not need to be an "all or nothing" proposition. Transitioning to part time work, such as the piano teacher example, may be a quicker path for some to FIRE. Also...

    Saturday People

This kind of says what want out of ER...for every day to be a Saturday. In other words, a day when I can do what I want or need to do, without someone or something else dictating what I do. I look forward to dropping my daughter off at school next year, and stopping by Starbucks for a...

    Hello, and a 401k question...

American Funds AF is indeed a reputable company, but as has been mentioned they do have fees. Once you get over a certain level, the fees reduce and eventually go away (at like $1M). I have had favorable experiences with some of their funds, such as: Income Fund of America Balanced Fund Of...

So how many miles a week are you running now?

Since I have been closing in on ER, I've wanted to get into better shape. What's the fun in being retired if you can't get out and do things. So..... I set a goal for 2007 to average "3 a day," or 1095 miles this year. So far, I have been fortunate enough to be ahead of this number! I alternate...

Cellphones... Anybody identify a good pre-paid plan???

Um....maybe I shouldn't let this cat out of the bag, but if all you want is a "911" phone, then buy one at a garage sale for $1.00. You don't need a plan of any kind to be able to dial 911 in the US!

Americans Not Eating Enough Fruits and Veggies

Eating healthier has been one of my "preparations" for ER. Who wants to retire and be so sick or fat that they can't enjoy life! I usually have fresh or dried fruit on high fiber cereal in the morning, and a glass of orange juice (2 fruits). Then, some kind of veggie for a morning snack...

Americans Not Eating Enough Fruits and Veggies

Americans know what to do but aren't doing it. How stupid is that? Americans Not Eating Enough Fruits and Veggies National goals for a healthy diet are still not being met, CDC report shows By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, March 15 (HealthDay News) -- Most Americans are...

    Moving at retirement

This is a very individual matter, and I'm sure there are good reasons for either choice. Unless I were running away from something, or wanted to leave family and friends for some reason, I can't personally see moving my "home base." I'd rather keep the home base, and do lots of traveling.

Do you consider healthy choices as part of "investing" for retirement?

I consider a healthy lifestyle absolutely as a wise investment. In the past 1 1/2 years, I have lost 50 pounds, and have been eating much healthier. Less red meat, more fish, white poultry, legumes, and tons of fruit & vegetables. Part of my motivation was to build my health and fitness for...

    Blood glucose

I think it is the cynic in me, but "normal" blood glucose levels may have been adjusted downward at the behest of the pharmaceutical corporations as a way of creating more clients. But then, maybe not.

    Gotta lose some LB's

This is a very important topic...thanks to all who have shared so far. What good is it to finally ER only to be a 300 pound blimp who can't do anything! I came to this realization about a year ago, and have since lost about 40 pounds. I also have shifted to a much healthier diet. Two resources...

    Retirement Guilt

No guilt here. When I finally bail (soon) I'll have 30+ years of service....so what if I started young. When they've worked 30 years in the same organization they have my permission to retire, too.

Is a Higher Pension Worth the Risk?

I didn't mean to imply that my pension would be 100% of my salary-- that is what the guy I was talking with said. I have checked, however, and my pension would be 100% at age 61 (40 years of service) but I'm not sticking around that long, I guarantee you.

Is a Higher Pension Worth the Risk?

Thanks everyone...you're right, I need to look at specific details more carefully. This subject just came up in a casual conversation. I don't really need life insurance. I qualify for lifetime medical and dental benefits. House is almost paid for, wife works in a good paying job (and not as...

Is a Higher Pension Worth the Risk?

A different reason to ER I was talking to a person who ERed last May, and he had a reason to ER that I do not believe I’ve heard on this board, or anywhere else. He is in the PERS system, and had 35 years of service. At his age, his pension would nearly equal 100% of his salary for as long as...

    ditch the car retire early

I have a 9 year old vehicle that I plan to keep until it falls apart. I drive to work and back, but am very strict on not driving it during lunch hour. I also insist upon using the company vehicles to go anywhere job-related. When I RE, I'm thinking of getting a 125 cc scooter or motorcycle...
