I use the soap sheets and a stretchy clothesline with clips on either end. Quick dry shirts, the magic underwear (no not the Mormon kind, the Ex-Officio ones), and zip-off Columbia pants as my basic wardrobe when traveling.
The Brits that DH did the second Mongolia Rally with had a novel addition to their packs: a blue blazer and white shirt. They donned these when dealing with border agents and at police stations, and DH was amazed at how much better their reception was compared to wearing the typical dirty hippie garb they had on moments before the transformation. They were filthy by the time they got to the end, but it seemed not to matter, just that they looked "dressed up".
