2018 YTD investment performance thread

Recalculating...

Indeed. World markets taking a beating all around. But where oh where do we put our hard earned money? Back into the market of course, lol. Santa's rally, sticking to that prediction especially after mid terms.

I'm not as good as gstillson so I'm currently rethinking (yeah that's dangerous) my objectives. Bought CCL at 54.95 as I want the 250 OBC next month + 50c dividend. Viewing it as a retirement perk :) Left everything else long .... still 3+ years from SWR of somewhere around 1-2%

FWIW: Talking heads state buying this dip is a fool's move

As of the close today, down 2.0% YTD, all-in.

YTD -.01 >>>> I think this has been one of the first times I have been in the negative side since I started checking at the start of each new month. It could be worse and could be better. LOL

Nice thread, I will go home this evening and compute my October numbers and then post my YTD and MTD performance.

What a difference a month makes! But still wupping VSMGX benchmark, which was -2.31% YTD thrugh Oct 31.

Oct 31-0.73%
Sep 304.22%
Aug 314.00%
Jul 313.04%
Jun 301.06%
May 311.24%
Apr 300.37%
Mar 310.12%
Feb 280.88%
Jan 313.53%

-1.04%.

Getting slaughtered on all funds except FBSOX and my short-term trading accounts.

FIDO says +5.59% YTD.

50% stocks - mostly utility NEE. Small caps are taking a beating - worries me because that is the real economy. Started buying Ex-USA again because they have been beat down and I'm DCA back in after unloading everything in that account last April for a nice profit.

The other 50% put into MM account last June because I could no longer sleep well with that amount in S&P 500 and only 2-3 years from FIRE. Plus bond funds cause despair in a rising rate environment. (Cannot buy individual bonds or CDs in my 401k). This was after 32 years of practically 100% in stocks.

Cash balance pension still chugging along at 4%.

I did my October numbers. So YTD my figures in SGD are:

Networth on 1/1/2018: 812k

YTD Net new inflows from salary savings: 56K

Networth on 1/11/2018: 814k

Growth: 0.35%

Considering my salary savings were about 6.9% of my networth, my actual investment performance is -6.55%.

Not a good year so far :(

Total return of +.65%. About 60% Equity etf and rest fixed income.

I need to make a correction from my post last night. After looking at one of my accounts I was using 10/30/2018 numbers for the day not 10/31/2018. I thought I was -.01 but I'm in positive ground at .04% after using the right day for my calculations. LOL

Up about 1.6% YTD. Having a large chunk of my portfolio in a stable value bond fund yielding over 3% has certainly helped during the last month.

I just added up my numbers this morning, and I'm now essentially flat for the year. I'm down about $62.00. Dollar-wise, October was probably my worst month ever...down about $121,000. But, percentage-wise I think I'm only down about 7-8%. October was a good lesson, that it's more important to focus on percentages, rather than dollar amounts! Peak-to-trough I was probably down about $250K in the Great Recession, but no single month was anywhere near six figures.

Down 1% YTD. All in, accounting for spending. BUT, total portfolio is still 19% more than retirement day 1/1/2016, after almost 3 years of spending.

1/4/2018 1.40%
2/1/2018 5%
3/1/2018 1.95%
4/1/2018 0.36%
5/1/2018 0.28%
6/1/2018 5.50%
7/1/2018 7%
8/1/2018 9.35%
9/1/2018 16.08%
10/1/2018 15.43%
11/1/2018 +5.66% ytd
Been a wild ride, at one point up 16.98% and at another down 2% earlier in the week the last week of October while finally ending up 4.5. And I did nothing besides buy the dip DCA style.

Wow! I think you are in a nice position.

YES He is! NYEXP is always out performing me. But I am about as passive an investor as they come. I do own some AAPL but I just DCA about 30x throughout the year including all the 401k/403b/Roth/Roth/529/529/Brokerage contributions.

If we end the year below 6% my plan is to front-load contributions in Q1 of next year to buy the dip.

I was tempted to sell everything last month, but decided against it. Saved myself some stress but lost about 12%-24% of opportunity. Meh. Pigs get slaughtered.
