Another appliance installation question

We need a new cooktop. The current one is flush in a granite countertop, and of course, no new cooktop from any manufacturer has those same exact dimensions. I can find some suitable options, but they are all slightly smaller, one inch or less width and/or height. In this case is the proper approach to install the smaller model and then fill the empty space with silicone that either matches in color or is transparent? Otherwise that empty space will fill with all kinds of yucky stuff.

I've also seen a couple of models I know DW would like, but are slightly too big - 1/4" or so of granite would need to go, and I guess it is ground away. This looks like something that could easily go wrong and needs a granite specialist and not a general kitchen type. Anyone have any suggestions?

We're moving soon, and taking our 30" stove with the double ovens. Unfortunately, our new house has granite with a 29" hole. Our granite store is going to run by and cut 1/2" off each side with a 4 1/2" grinder with a diamond circular blade. No big deal.

I also have the same tool, but not the experience to cut a completely straight line.

It's just no big deal to get the granite enlarged slightly.

+1 Bamaman. Making it slightly bigger would be my choice. I also have the right tool but would likely call my granite countertop provider for a pro job.

I went back and looked at the current layout. There is room between the cabinets for a 36" model. If we're going to cut granite, might as well get a bigger unit. DW is certainly in favor of that.

If you go with the smaller cooktop, I have a piece of molding that goes around my entire cooktop to keep any junk for falling in between. I would think that's pretty standard, since the space has to be just a bit wider than the cooktop to slide in, doesn't it? Seems better than 1/2" of silicone all around.
