I'm looking at the Boca Raton area. I notice there are lots of golf courses but they all appear to be private.

For those that live in the area, do people who want to golf buy homes on the golf course and become members? How does it work?

I'd like to live in an area that has lots of golf courses, but club membership is not my thing. I've never liked the idea of feeling I've got to play a certain golf course to get my money's worth.

Most of them (the clubs where the house and course are together) require not only a membership, but an equity investment (10's of thous) and often a large annual payment in addition to the monthly dues. This can suppress the house prices and a lot of these club homes look cheap for the price of the house, because all that comes on top. You can't buy the house in those neighborhoods without all that.

But there are plenty of public courses around as well. They don't tend to be the tournament-worthy courses (like Broken Sound). My BIL plays at Osprey in west boca.
