I've always sold my used cars myself, mostly through Craigslist or online forums for the type of car it was. In all cases I got at least $4500 more than the dealer trade in value and sometimes as much as $7500 more. I keep my cars in good shape, in every case the first person who looked at it bought it. It wasn't too much trouble to ignore the scammers. Local cash sale only.
I know I’m leaving money on the table by not selling myself, and I did so when I was young. But these days I don’t want some nut job or lowballer coming to my house to look, or some seemingly decent person coming back if there’s a problem with the car after purchase - even though I’ve never sold a car in bad shape or without disclosing an issue. I’ve heard some horror stories about unreasonable buyers after sale, from online and a few people I actually know.
