If you're peeing at night get checked for sleep apnea

For older guys, I suspect there's a different "main cause".

This is really interesting. I'm female and do get up to pee 3-4 times a night most nights. Just last week when BF was here overnight he noted that in the early morning hours when he had his hand across my chest, he'd feel my heart beat normally, then stop briefly, then I'd snore. Although I don't have diabetes and I'm not overweight, I do have an enlarged heart and mitral valve prolapse which means I get winded on exertion. I need to find a sleep specialist. I'm on Medicare but could certainly afford the cost of an initial consultation to see if I need a sleep study.

Redd Foxx had done some research on why men woke up at night.
15% woke up to go to the bathroom
10% woke up to get something to eat
75% woke up to go home

Interesting.
Thanks for posting

Thanks for posting. Past week’s dr visit had a discussion on how many times I get up in the night to use the bathroom. Doc was satisfied with my once per night bathroom visits, and my psa number. Never discussed sleep apnea, but I suppose it’s possible.

I typically get up twice during the night to pee, and I was a little worried about that so I checked with a urologist. He did all the standard tests and said everything looked normal. Recommended that I not drink anything after 9:00pm and try to eat dinner earlier (like, before 7:00pm). I do have trouble sleeping soundly through the night, but it's kind of a chicken-vs-egg thing. Is it the urge to pee that's waking me up, or is it that I wake up due to insomnia/apnea/etc. and then realize I have to pee?

I take a quick trip to the bathroom and before taking my melatonin and try to cut out fluids (other than a sip of water if my mouth is dry) for at least an hour before sleeping.

Once a night for me ......on occasion. When I am really tired, like last night, I sleep the whole night without getting up. My Fitbit says my sleep patterns are OK and oxygen variation is within normal range. Maybe I am lucky....so far.

I have had sleep apnea for 11 years and on a cpap machine. I have dry mouth from my medication so I drink all the time which means I get up to pee every 2-3 hours all night long.

Usually once a night for me. I downloaded a free app called SnoreLab. You put your phone/iPad/laptop next to your bed and it records every sound you make and provides a nightly score value, with higher numbers indicative of apnea. My score was surprisingly low, definitely more farts sounds than snoring.
As an aside, I am amused at how carefree we are on this site to tell thousands of strangers how often we pee, our prostate size, and many other elements of our personal lives.

So, far I don't get up to go to the bathroom. Once in a blue moon I do but I have taken in a lot of water or have eaten like a lot of watermelon or something like that. I have been very lucky not having to get up so far..

Never sleep through the night, but rarely get up for bathroom purposes.

I'm 59 years old and drink a lot of fluids, with frequent urination during the day. I always feel like I have a very weak bladder. However, I rarely ever wake up during the night to go pee. Every once in a while I'll wake up at 4 or 5am to pee, but that doesn't happen very often. I usually pee before bed, and not again till I wake up in the morning.

My wife is 55 and typically gets up to pee 2-3 times a night on average.

LOL! True, but it's good to have a place for honest and informative discussions on things we don't discuss at the dinner table. I was planning to schedule an appointment at a sleep clinic since I found one near me that looks good, but I'm downloading SnoreLab to start.

Once a night, then back to sleep.

Usually 2 times especially since we got our dog. She will come up to my side of the bed and raise up on it and pat me. If I don't respond she goes to the other side of the bed to my DW who then will say Nikki needs to go out while tapping and shaking me.Then I go out with the dog & then stop to pee on my way back to bed.DW recently got a garden flag that says A SPOILED ROTTEN DOG lives here!

Yup. Which is why, even though I’d love to attend a Texas area meet-up of this lovely group, maybe not…

Been using a CPAP for 20+ years. Literally saved my life. Pee about once per night on average, usually 3-4 hours into my sleep. Been this way for my entire life as I do hydrate quite a bit because dehydration does hell to my intestines and stomach.

Any bathroom runs during the night for me are directly tied to what I drink and how close before going to bed I drink it. I normally go to bed between 11:30-midnight and wake up between 5:30 and 6:30. If I drink nothing after 10pm and use the bathroom before going to bed I am fine. If I drink water or something non-caffeinated after 10pm I wake up in the middle of the night maybe half the time. If I drink something caffeinated, I am guaranteed to wake up between 2-3 AM to use the bathroom.

It all depends on who is keeping dossiers of folks posts, to plan for a meet-up... :D

Interesting- my Snore Score was 24; according to the site, median is 25 and you should shoot for 10. Since so much of the population is overweight, which is a big risk factor in sleep apnea, a score of 24 for someone of normal weight is probably high. I'm going to start by shifting my eating patterns to stop earlier before bedtime and see what that does. I love cheap prevention!

And my granddaughters, who have shared a hotel bed with me, will find the graphs amusing.:D

:), had to laugh and almost lost my coffee. I think yours is the first post I've read that mentions farts! Ah, well, a natural body function. And I am a nurse, so I talk about everything. Sometimes my DH has to stop me and say "hey, can you talk about this later, I'm eating."
And yes, it is refreshing that folks here are free to discuss so many different topics. I really enjoy this forum!

Thanks for the info on the Snorelab app. I plan to download and check.

Do you feel like you had enough sleep in the morning or do you have that feeling of tiredness in the morning?

I also usually have to pee 3-4 hours into my sleep and wake up in the morning feeling like I did not get enough sleep.
