Is anyone really surprised?
Think about all those signs in US restaurants that employees must wash hands after using the bathroom or health inspections and they still get failing grades. Now imagine the conditions in places you've traveled to China, Northern Africa, India etc. You don't really want to know how your food is handled and what goes into it.

Not good, but in reality, if the human body were this sensitive to less than 100% sanitary conditions, we'd be extinct. And if everything were 100% sanitary, our immune system may forget how to do its job when something else in the environment hits it...
