My stepson is graduating this month and it leaves my DW and I empty nesters. We began the discussions last year about what we wanted to do with our independence. After 17 years at current company and 37 in my industry and DW 6 years with her current company we decided that we were packing it up and moving to NW Arkansas, where her folks live and two of the kids will be in college. We saw the real estate market firming up there and pulled the trigger on a new (for us) home. The cost of living from the housing standpoint is so much better there - larger house (didn't try to do this intentionally), 1/2 acre wooded lot on a greenbelt, cost 23% less than current home is selling for, taxes less than 1/2.
Just put our home on the market (dallas suburb) on Thursday, had 23 showings, 5 offers above list, one being the cash offer we accepted.
I gave my company 4 months notice of my departure, which was a surprise to them, but they are allowing me to work as long as I want to and will keep me on till the end of the year, even though we will move to Arkansas full time at the end of June.
My DW is still looking for a CPA job and I will do something, just not sure what yet.
We feel very blessed the way the doors have opened up for us every step of the way.
Anticipating a transfer of assets (and market drop, wrong again) soon, I had most of our assets in cash to facilitate the transfer upon departure of current employer.
We have $1.2 m in assets, including home equity and plan to work approx 5 more years, though at a much reduced salary. I am 53, she is 49.
I would say that this is our pre-retirement but I know that is not popular on this site...all or nothing, right?
This site has answered a lot of the questions I have about making the move we have chosen and the conservative nature of those that post here balances the more risk taking side of my personality.
