You should drive to NH and visit Mt Washington. You can drive up the mountain for a very thrilling experience or take the cog railway. Mt Washington has the most extreme weather in north America. If you are there in September it should be low 30 degrees or possibly even 20s on top of the mountain and on some days you can practically get blown off your feet. DW and I loved going to Franconia, NH when we lived in the NE and recommend the Franconia Inn.
