Plant care while on vacation

I haven't had to leave tomato plants alone, but have left basil and other starts alone outside in a pot. I have a large plastic sheetcake container with a hole cut in the bottom big enough for the pot to fit. I put the lid upside down and fill it partway with water, put the bottom on to slow evaporation, and set the pot in the hole. If the weather's going to be unusually cool, I'll set a round cake tray lid on the pot to act as a greenhouse. That lid has a few holes cut in it so it doesn't get too hot inside if the weather turns warm and sunny. This has kept my starts going and also kept the slugs from getting them for up to two weeks.
