Primary Home Sale Cap Gains

There's little chance in our LCOL area that we'd have to reconcile $500K in property appreciation. We've had 5 homes in 4 cities in 37 years being married, and the "basis" of the first carries forward to the next and the next and the next.

I'd hate to think I'd have to document an accurate "basis" to the taxman at this point in my life. I do have records on past home sales, but no the bills on improvements, etc.

I don't think that's how it works anymore.
