Protective cover over wood shelf........

I have a nice solid wood liquor cabinet from Pottery Barn. I want to store some glassware and also liquor in it. What kind of contact paper or mat can I use to protect the wood yet let it breathe? I ruined a solid wood desk putting a plastic mat on it so I don't want that to happen.

Linen bar towel or cut up damask linen table cloth?
If solid wood, the desktop should be refinishable.

The cloth suggested by justpalinbll should work. Or, if you are worried about liquids, for a few bucks have a glass shop cut a piece of glass to fit. Be sure to support the glass up off the wood with small felt pieces (so the wood can breathe and you don't trap moisture under the glass)

There's some rubbery mesh that works great for this. I use it to keep wood from sliding around when sanding it.
