So I gave notice today...

I am going to retire 20 October (or earlier if i can sell my house). I am conflicted on whether to give four weeks notice (company requirement/request) or give five months notice next week. It would sure be easier letting cat out of the bag in terms of finding replacement, being able to discuss retirement (we are going on three months of travel), and not being stuck in normal annual review activities.

Flip side is that i can get sidelined early although i don't think they can escort me to the door without severance. Has anyone given far advance notice and been shown the door?

thanks,

Marc

It depends on the company boss etc...My company wants 30-60 days notice. I gave 60 days notice 2 weeks ago and than moved the date out another 60 days per request of management with some items I wanted so technically I am giving 120 days notice....so we will see how it works out

I gave 6 months notice, as i wanted to give my company plenty of time to get a replacement, and so i could train them. I will have money in my company ESOP for a while, so it was in my best interest to train that person well. I was also very tight with my boss, and did not think they would let me go before the 6 months.

I gave 30 days notice. It was the longest 30 days of my life.

+1
The first week was spent politely convincing my boss that there was nothing the company could do to keep me in board longer; he originally wanted 6 months more ... nonono

After that, work was transitioned pretty quickly. Since I had planned giving notice for several months, I already had a detailed transition & communication plan ready so I just executed it. By the last week, there was little left to do.

YAAAAAAAA! That's just great. Approach the coming weeks like you're going to be like a bird let out of your cage. There's no turning back.

Our MegaCorp gave me 1 day's notice that many of those 55 and older were being sent home--tomorrow. And they required a hold harmless agreement be signed before the very generous severance package was executed. Had I worked in Home Office, I would have had two big private uniformed security guards escort me out on the spot.

Be glad you did it on your terms--and that you did it your way.
