I have not found a replacement for Hostess fruit pies yet.

The closest I've found to what Hostess pies used to be are from JJ's. https://www.jjsbakery.net/ I first found them at a little general store on the way to town. They tend to carry a more diverse selection of products than the supermarkets. Our local Safeway carried them for a while but they seemed to stop carrying them. I love the apple pies.

The last time I had a Hostess fruit pie there was hardly any fruit in the filling and there was just something odd about the crust. Very disappointing, I used to love those back in high school.

recall the taste changing for the worse around the time trans fats were vilified and removed.

That could be, but I would think the smaller brands would have eliminated trans fats too and they taste fine.

Even the cheap store brands taste better than Hostess now, they just don't have much filling in them.

Ironically, I think the Hostess products seem more "artificial" now. I can't really describe it, there's just a weird texture and bland flavor. I suppose that's a good thing as it deters me from buying them as often. :)

I think Bimbo purchased them (could be wrong) who's the largest bakery company in the world.

I had never heard of Bimbo until we went on vacation to Puerto Vallarta several years ago. We followed several delivery trucks with a little dough boy character and "Bimbo, Bimbo, Bimbo" written all over the truck.

Back home "Bimbo" has a different meaning, so we got a good laugh over it. :)

Per Google.............
Your sense of smell and taste change as you age. Between the ages of 40 and 50, the number of taste buds decreases, and the rest begin to shrink, losing mass vital to their operation. After age 60, you may begin to lose the ability to distinguish the taste of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter foods.

I just turned 55 and have not noticed any change in tastes or smells. Of course, I have acquired an appreciation for some foods I disliked when I was younger.

We still have recipes for meals we made often when we were first married. We didn't have much money, so we made a lot of stuff with hamburger, boxed macaroni dinners, etc. Occasionally we'll make one of those meals again for sentimental reasons and are amazed how unappetizing they taste now. I guess we have a more sophisticated palate in our old age. :)

I agree. Wheat Thins became boring, and even Triscuits lost their appeal.

Probably for the better, as salty crackers aren't good for me anyway

And I can't,any longer, stomach the fake "cream" in the cellophane-wrapped baked treats.

Lest anyone accuse me of snack-virtue signaling, I more than make up for it by making our own baked goods, from scratch, with butter and double-strength vanilla. The fewest artificial ingredients I can manage (some will always creep in there).

I don't eat those items often but recall the taste changing for the worse around the time trans fats were villified and removed.

In college we named them 101 ways to hide hamburger
Which was later renamed to Glop 1, Glop 2, etc.
1lb hamburger + 1 box mac&cheese = cheeseburger glop.

I have never had a Hostess product .I grew up with tasty cake treats but I have not had one in years .I just am not crazy about dessert especially desserts that have a shelf life of infinity & beyond .

I also recall these fresh baked desserts as a kid.
Tastykake | Home

The shelf life is very limited, so trucks are always visiting stores to retrieve what's expired.

"The way you eat that oatmeal pie makes me just want to DIE!"

I recall those pink snowballs. A guy a Megacorp had peeled the cake out and let the coconut and icing gook dry out. He kept it on his desk for years, the damn thing really didn't change! Yum..

A while back we went to a talk with a registered dietician and as part of her talk she passed around a package of some vending machine-type cupcakes (I don't remember if they were specifically Hostess brand) that was about ten years old. The point of doing this was that because of the large number of preservatives in the food it was still safe to eat!

The larger point of her talk was to look at the list of ingredients; if you don't know what it is and/or can't spell it, don't eat it.

So this may be what changed with the cupcakes. I was never a huge fan of those anyway, I'm a Twinkies guy myself.:)

There used to be a readily available product that made Hostess snack cakes and the like taste a lot better back in the day. I think it's available in Colorado, and California, and....

Way back, I remember enjoying a hostess product. But that was more than 30 years ago. The thing I did persist in having, occasionally, was an Oreo.

Now those have definitely changed!

It has to be the trans fat. They had the dual benefit of being super stable with long shelf life, and having a great mouth feel to them. The new Oreo icing doesn't melt away like the old. Has to be the fat.

Now back to the low carb thread. :)

In some perverse way the powers that be must have figured that by eliminating the trans fats they could imply the products were not unhealthy. But let's get real, here. No one eats cupcakes for health benefits. At least for Suzy Q's I wish they'd bring back the trans fats.

I got one for a treat to give my grand child a taste. After a few bites it was forgotten. The kid wants grandpa's chocolate chip cookies (which I make with 1/3 less added sugar). Gotta love 'em (the kid and the cookies).

FWIW, since I try to eat lower and slow carb, when I do eat something sugary, I want it to taste very good and be worth the withdrawals from my 'Well Done' account. Most processed foods don't make the grade.

I agree. I turn up my nose at the Food Porn recipes my FB friends post (e.g., flatten out pre-packaged chocolate chip cookie dough on a cookie sheet, bake, spread with a mix of melted Peanut Butter cups and Snickers bars) but my one favorite junk food from back in college was Dolly Madison Zingers, now Hostess Zingers. I went through a long, dry period when I couldn't get them after I moved from Ohio to NJ (lived in NJ 1978-2003) and would stock up when I found them elsewhere. I've had them recently, typically after a very long bike ride, and they just don't taste the same. Maybe it's just as well.

Oh, that's why I out Tabasco on everything

Im more an Entemanns(sp?) guy. Those raspberry danish sheets always disapeared. Just another one inch slice....
That and Drake coffee cakes and a glass of cold whole milk. And Tastycake mini donuts with the brown crunchy coating.

Wasn't that the same stuff that was in brownies back then?

My taste for sugar has eroded over the years, so any of these foods no longer taste appealing. I figured that was just part of ageing, like why kids don't like tea but older adults do.

My wife went to work for Hostess/Wonder Bread as manager of a thrift store. She raised her first 3 kids on Twinkies. After 14 years of slinging numerous loaves of bread, she wore out her shoulder and elbow.

I personally preferred Ding Dongs, later to be changed to King Dons by name only.

You guys are getting old and your body changes as you age. It’s like the talk you have with a teenager but the opposite lol. Your body is like a flower....a dying flower. Tastes are duller, colors aren’t as bright, sounds are muffled, everything isn’t as good as it used to be.
Not only that but your outlook also changes.
Unreal expectations are a recipe for discontent.

I think I first saw Hostess Cupcakes on Howdy Doody in the mid 50s. I was amazed that you could get a chocolate cupcake with icing in the middle and was excited when I could have one. Not so much now.

Cheers!
