No not the book by S Junger but the evolution of my retirement plan.
After many years of planning/saving and convincing DW we agreed that I would ER in July of 2015. The final agreement was in Nov. On Dec 1st my company announced that it would merge with another company. Initially there was hope for a layoff package but it seemed that for my function there were no "synergies" so there would not be one, so the original date stayed intact. Early in 2015 it looked like we would move to a new facility in late June. More discussions with DW and we agreed it made no sense to move and then quit a month later so it move to June 5 (almost D-Day).
Two weeks ago there was a memo that asked if someone what thinking of leaving to let mgmt know and they would be offered a "generous" package. I immediately volunteered without seeing the package (got in trouble with DW for that but my rationale was some package was better than no package).
Forward to this week and yesterday I was officially given notice in order to satisfy the WARN act here in the US. I have worked out with my boss that my last day will be May 1st (May Day a fitting last day of work I think). The package is ok and will net me about 4 months salary plus Cobra coverage for 6 months on the company before I have to take over HC myself.
Needless to say I am ecstatic, I never thought that my plans in Nov 2014 would work out so well. There is lots to do and lots to prepare for which was already started but will need a bit of acceleration but I don't think I could have purposely planned it better. I thank everyone here for the advice so far and look forward to your advice in the future as I officially ER and turn the page on a working career and start one as a wanttobe rockstar (with no talent)
