Portfolio Charts continues to be the most innovative tool on the web for looking at asset allocations in a fresh way. It's all the more amazing since it's a one man show, yet I think Tyler is offering things here that are far more useful (especially for ER's) than the portfolio construction and risk assessment tools offered by the big brokerages.

Case in point is this new post that shows the uselessness of standard deviation as a way to assess risk and replaces it with the far more realistic "ulcer index." Perhaps unsurprisingly a quick scan of this index for the portfolios on his site shows that the Larry (Swedroe) Portfolio, Golden Butterfly and Permanent Portfolio are far better choices for risk-averse retirees than the standard all-stock-and-bond mixes promoted by the major firms.
