Travel hopes for 2022

I just read, that many European airports are very busy, chaotic with extremely long lines waiting. Amsterdam and London were pointed out in examples.

Some lady waited 3 hours just to get through UK customs, then spend 1.5 hours looking for her luggage.

After this fiasco that I talked about in another thread I am done traveling for awhile especially overseas. I have been stuck in my hotel room for 2 days and am stuck here until they pick me up on the first. I took a trip to Ireland and when I didn’t feel well Wednesday night took a Covid test Thursday morning. I expected to leave the tour but didn’t expect them to keep me isolated for more than 5 days. Others on the bus felt like they had a cold and said after what happened to me they weren’t saying a thing. The vaccine is doing it’s job as I only feel like I have a cold. I wish if things weren’t going to work out it would have happened before instead of on the trip.

I've read traveler reports too

We were supposed to cruise Baltics the end of July (cruiseline canceled) & UK in Sept (opted to postpone that as Dad just moved to assisted living & is fragile...figured being overseas for 3 weeks wasn't prudent right now).

Even more glad we did.

We are flying monthly to cruise the next few months.

Flying in day before embarkation (which we nearly always have done).

Take early flight--BUT it might NOT be the 1st one. I take into account layover time (more than an hour is essential) & how many flights to my destination depart from that airport as the day progresses, JUST to cover my bases.

There's a long list of hints for surviving the airport chaos circulating in social media. it was written by a flight attendant. I'm sure she's been on the receiving end of the anger and anguish when things go wrong and her advice is helpful- but it's really the airlines that made this mess. They promised more flights than they could deliver, took passengers' money for them and now passengers and customer-facing workers are paying the price.

What are the reasons for this?

What do you mean more flights than they can deliver? They already have them scheduled, airplanes and routes assigned, etc.

Is it really a staffing problem, exacerbated by lots of staff out sick?

Normally large numbers of flight cancellations are due to weather problems or occasionally computer systems problems.

Staffing
It's been an issue in nearly all fields since pandemic.
That plus COVID is still impacting--we are endemic now.
Unfortunately it isn't seasonal, and more contagious than most viruses.

Unfortunately since they put out schedules nearly a year in advance, it doesn't give them wiggle room to plan for these things.

We are not planning any airline travel this year, too much upheaval going on.
Driving, even with gas prices, and staying in the US, just in case of Covid, is our plan for now!

This is so sad and disturbing on so many levels.

“I probably have Covid, but I’m not going to test or take any precautions because I want to complete my group tour”.

So pretty much the whole bus will catch this “cold”.

I’d say this nixes group travel for a while!

The company has had so many people get Covid on their tours that they hired another company to help……
Well - now we know why!

Teacher Terry, I'm really sorry about how this turned out. I know how much you were looking forward to this trip. A gutting disappointment. You're not the first to be soured on international travel during this time. I don't have the stomach for it.

Just came back from Portugal.

We had to get an antigen test 24 hours prior to flight. Not a big deal, a non event really. $30. cost. Could have been $15 had we been close to a Walmart or a Costco.

Lisbon airport: 3 hour wait to clear immigration/security etc. Came home through Faro. 10 minute wait to clear immigration and security.

I suspect delays depend on when you flight, and others, arrive. Lisbon has many transatlanic flights arriving at the same time frame.

Spoke to some Brits. UK airports are a mess at the moment. We will be booking to Greece for Sept. We often go through LHR so we will be monitoring this.

The other note....the wait times and the situations change. Our experience is that the US news channels do a poor job of reporting Europe. Just because an airport was a mess as reported on a month old news report does not mean that it will be a mess next month.

My brother took wife and 2 young adult children to Europe. They brought along the free US test kits, and the daughter tested positive 2 days before the flight back to the US. When taking the official test for the return flight, the daughter was confirmed positive. She stayed behind in Stockholm for 1 week, and tested negative the 2nd time.

My brother tested positive the day after returning home.

They were fully vaccinated and boosted. The symptoms were slight, and could be taken for a cold. He did mention the loss of taste, and said perhaps due to an early prescription of Paxlovid, the taste returned in 2 days, and all other symptoms abated. The daughter was also back to normal and has gone to work.

I heard so many stories about Europe travelers getting kicked out of tours and cruise boats.

We will be traveling self-guided in a few months. That hopefully gave me some more freedom to manage. I hope I don't have to check out the healthcare system in Europe to see it is as easy to get help as told in anecdotes.

The congestion at Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) was horrible. The Dutch government will be clamping down on flights to/from the airport to reduce traffic.

The scene at Heathrow was also nightmarish.

I will be flying through Heathrow in September. I hope it is past the peak season, and will not be so bad.

From NPR Web site:

Liz Morgan arrived at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport 4 1/2 hours before her flight to Athens, finding the line for security snaking out of the terminal and into a big tent along a road before doubling back inside the main building.

"There's elderly people in the queues, there's kids, babies. No water, no nothing. No signage, no one helping, no toilets," said Morgan, who is from Australia and had tried to save time Monday by checking in online and taking only a carry-on bag.

People "couldn't get to the toilet because if you go out of the queue, you lost your spot," she said.

After two years of pandemic restrictions, travel demand has roared back, but airlines and airports that slashed jobs during the depths of the COVID-19 crisis are struggling to keep up. With the busy summer tourism season underway in Europe, passengers are encountering chaotic scenes at airports, including lengthy delays, canceled flights and headaches over lost luggage.

...

At Heathrow, a sea of unclaimed luggage blanketed the floor of a terminal last week. The airport blamed technical glitches with the baggage system and asked airlines to cut 10% of flights at two terminals Monday, affecting about 5,000 passengers.

"A number of passengers" may have traveled without their luggage, the airport said.

When cookbook writer Marlena Spieler flew back to London from Stockholm this month, it took her three hours to get through passport control.

Spieler, 73, spent at least another hour and a half trying to find her luggage in the baggage area, which "was a madhouse, with piles of suitcases everywhere."

What was your routing from Faro?

Probably another European airport before the flight across the Atlantic?

This is a travel discouragement. Too bad it happened and cut your vacation.

Have you considered, after July 1, to stay and see a little more before returning ?

Staying longer on your own is not a bad idea. I hear they even speak a form of English in Ireland, so that will make things easier. :D

Good point that they had to figure this out a year in advance- and that was when positivity rates were lowest, before testing was required to enter the US, etc. Maybe they thought things would be back to pre-pandemic levels.

OTOH, they had time to adjust. Memorial Day should have shown them they were under-staffed and couldn't handle that level of traffic but it looks like they're still doing knee-jerk mass cancellations close to or on travel dates. The airlines also clamored for lifting the requirement for a negative COVID test to get back into the US (and I agree it's very happy news that the requirement was lifted) but they already didn't have the staff to handle the traffic they had. It's just gonna get worse.

My plans were also crushed by inflation. My wife and I wanted to go to Europe this year to visit Germany and Italy. My grandparents are from these two countries, and I wanted to see the places they grew up in.

I booked this trip with a friend and she is now home. I don’t find traveling alone fun and at this point after being gone for 2 weeks I just want to go home and see my little dogs. I booked a 11 day trip because I don’t like to be gone longer than that and Friday it’s 15 days.

Dublin is having long delays to get through security depending on the time of day. I intend to get to the airport 6 hours early. I am staying at the airport hotel with a 24 hour shuttle which takes 3 minutes to get to the airport.

Looking at a September trip to England, for a special family related reason. Just me, as DW can't go on this one. It has been four years since I was there and I'm really looking forward to hoisting some real ales.

I'm seeing some pretty good prices right now, so I'm hoping the flight cancellation issues will have been sorted out by then.

Good idea! sitting in the airport, past security, to wait sounds much better than arriving late and missing your plane. You can always get something to read in the airport if you are bored.

I am pretty excited for you! Probably should mention that I saw in the news media here, that a lot of domestic flights this weekend are being cancelled. Hoping yours isn't and that you are home with your doggies ASAP! :)

On advantage of leaving from Dublin is that you clear customs at the Dublin airport, at least I did on my one trip to Ireland. I was surprised to see a US service man providing security as I headed towards my departure gate. Then I noticed the sign advising me I was entering the USA, USA soil that is. ?!?!?!?! I guess there are several other airports in the world where this is done. It sure made transferring to my next flight in NY easier.

I have been watching the news here and know that the flights are being canceled. I am on a excellent flight that goes nonstop from Dublin to Dallas and has not been canceled and also on time the past few weeks. I am hoping it’s a priority as that’s a lot of people to reschedule. I then spend 2.5 hours in Dallas before flying home. I have a kindle app on my phone with lots of books. Thanks for the good wishes:)). I really miss my sweet little babies.

Yes, Ottawa Canada airport was like that, pretty handy to simply land and go.

Breathing a sigh of relief for DS

He flew to NYC on Delta this AM.
He was lamenting his 6AM flight...and the need to get on the road at 3:15 to be there in time.
I told him 1st flights of the day have least chance of cancellations & delays.
He was in a Lyft on the way to his buddy's by 11EST!

So my retirement goal was to TRAVEL.
WELLLL....we are TOTALLY OVER CRUISING THIS YEAR!

Had originally planned 2 Europe trips this summer/fall. But DF moved to assisted living in March & is fragile. We are going to hold on travel outside of N. America for a bit.

We kept getting deal after deal on cruises...who am I to pass up a good deal??!!
Luckily we have SWA Companion pass thru 2023. I plan to take full advantage of that!

July--2 wk Caribbean cruise (1 wk w/ DH, 1 wk solo--he only wants to miss 1 wk of golf league)
August--2 wk Caribbean cruise solo
Sept--1 wk AK cruise w/ DH's aunt & uncle
Oct--Day in Disneyland & 4 nt 80s cruise w/ BFF
Nov--9 day Caribbean cruise w/ friends we met on cruise in 2018
Dec--Wk Caribbean poker cruise (DH won this in 2019)
Jan--2 wk Hawaiian cruise--free thru Casino Match on Carnival (they will be so disappointed that we don't gamble much on a cruise)

Those are all a lock; here are our tentative cruises next year:
(Princess has $1 deposits right now so figured why not be hopeful...)
Feb--Celebrity Beyond Caribbean 7 day--I loved Apex & Edge so wanna try this ship
Mar--10 day Panama Canal
Apr--CA coast cruise

The next 2 are VERY tentative
Aug--10 day Med cruise w/ our 3 YA kids as college grad gifts
(been in the works for a while so we may break our only N. America rule for this)
Dec--18 day S. America cruise

Our goal is to expand our travels OUTSIDE of N. America.
We do have just a handful of states left to visit. Could focus on that first.
Anyone know a reason to visit N. Dakota--STRUGGLING with that one.
It's maybe 6 hours to the border from here...could drive it to say we did...or just forget about it!
