The opposite of FIRE is someone like my old boss at the hedge fund. I would estimate his pre-crash net worth at close to 100MM. He lost a lot in the crash but is probably worth 25 to 50MM nowadays. Even with his high lifestyle, I think he has more than he could spend. Yet he soldiers on with a tiny fund barely large enout (assets under management) to keep the lights on. Extremely bright guy and I think he keeps it up due to a need for intellectual stimulation and an A type personality.

I have to assume she liked her job.

Even though some may interpret it as foolish (those who hate their j*b)... you have to hand it to her for keeping on keeping on!


But generally speaking about the phenomenon.

I know a person who worked till 70 when they qualified for a full pension at 65 and that pension was very close to 80% of their wages. fairly high paid worker (assume about 70k). I know this person hated their job. It was common knowledge. This person had 40+ years in at 65 which meant they accumulated no meaningful pension increase after 65 because of the formula and rates. They hated their job and was just slacking.... (because I am a manager I know the details)... I know this person got very small raises that did not even keep up with cost of living increase... maybe a 1.5% raise.

I assume the poor fool thought they were milking the company for every last cent... the motivation: [screw them... I hate this place... I will do the absolute minimum and milk these @$$h0les for a paycheck...heh, heh, heh]

Do the math.... how much was this person earning an hour for the extra 5 years of work? Don't forget FICA and the other costs of working!

I figure this dumb$h!t was paying to work a job that they hated!

If my characterization sounds cold... you just have to trust me... if you worked with this person and was depending on them to get something done... you were usually scr3wed! Why... because their motivation... "I ain't doin' $h!t... 'cept complain profusely".

I work with a VP who at 74 still loves what he does, he told me as much just a few days ago. And I told him 'then you should keep right on working' and he should even though his net worth is undoubtedly astronomical. I would love to feel that way about my job, and I once did. I hope to have an encore career that I love, we'll see.

I watched the video--she is an amazing person (very quick witted, walks to work every day, doesn't wear glasses). You would never know she was 101 when the video was made. Most people her age are not only not able to work, they aren't able to live alone.
