I am almost retired and am planning to move to Canada or Europe this summer but I heard that you need a valid US address to keep the brokerage account and IRA account active. Is that true ?

I see more retirees living abroad but can you do it without a valid US address ? I figured a PO box address is no good, correct ?

Any suggestions ?

thanks

I do not know if address question is correct or not. I have this "friend" who has a brother in law who lives in another country and uses said friends home address. Reminds me of a doctor golfing buddy who told me he had a patient who said he had a friend who might have "picked" up a problem. He replied, whip your friend out and I'll have a look.

Both Fidelity and Wells Fargo have told me that you need a valid US address to OPEN an account. But once it is open, they are happy to maintain it even if you move abroad. They will mail statements, allow you to make exchanges, etc., no problem.
