I'm 49, been working at Megacorp 28 years. Repeatedly told those in charge I was looking to get out for over a year. So they said they would package me out last summer. Then a few months ago they changed the story to no package, you are on your own.

So quite a surprise when I was called into a meeting today to find my Director with a HR rep. They told me they are offering severance (one year of salary), 11k health stipend, 8k (pro-rata bonus), and I would be eligible for unemployment. Then I was escorted out.

So today starts the journey to the next phase of life!

Congruations !!!! I am waiting for the same "opportunity" to force me to end my OMY syndrome !

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life !

Well, you got what you wanted. Congrats.

That was what I hoped for - reach FI and ready for ER... then be offered a package...

Didn't happen for me... and I was tired of waiting.

Congratulations on being offered the dream scenario.

Even though that exit was probably a little unsettling in its suddenness (were you in the middle of writing an email?), I hope you will start enjoying your new normal really soon! That is a sweet severance package.

Congratulations!

Congratulations and welcome to retirement!

You received a nice package so I hope that softens the instant departure you experienced.

Escorted out, eh? Nice final touch. Remember that if anyone calls you for work related advice.

Congratulations on the severance! I'm envious.

Unless you were in a real sensitive position, it confounds me how some Megas act. Was it really necessary to escort you out of the building? I can see it where someone is fired or there is a stressful relationship or you're dealing with very sensitive data, but really.....it's like one day they trust you represent them and to make big decisions on their behalf and the next day they don't trust you enough to clean out your office and say goodbye to your colleagues without stealing the store.

+1

Sweet package, though. Treat yourself tonight to a little splurge.

Man, now I feel cheated for getting only 6 months' severance pay!

Now instead of working "one more year", you get PAID for one more year without any more w*rk! What a sweet deal if you're ready for it!

+1.

Throughout my career I've seen companies treat laid off employees like criminals escorted out of the door by HR and security upon notification.:nonono:
These employees were not terminated for cause and deserved a dignified treatment in my opinion.

To the OP, good luck in your retirement.

Nice!! As a mariner working for the same company for twenty years I can expect a ride from the boat to my car, with a possible bag search to ensure I didn't loot boat toiletries.

Congratulations on getting out with more than what you asked for. And don't give the "escorted out" thing a second thought. It's about them, not you. Welcome to the next phase in your life.

The nice thing about being escorted out is that they can't possibly call you to do more stuff for them, LOL. Go ahead and celebrate!

The severance is awesome.

However escorting you out of the building shows a lack of class IMO and is counter productive if they ever want to hire former employees again. For good employees, it only makes sense if they are going to a direct competitor

:dance::dance::dance: Enjoy!

I recall the days when my company was shutting down. 3300 employees in a total phase out over a 6 month period. Upper level managers had a limited access parking lot.
Notification came early, when the card scanner didn't lift the gate. An hour to box office belongings, and a uniformed escort to the elevator and out the door.
For many 30+ years... over in one hour.

The FAQ they gave me says part of the agreement is that I can never be reinstated with the company in any capacity. :)

It was a total shock. All my co-workers were like what is going on??
They took me to my desk, I took the few things I had. I asked should I turn off the computer, they said no leave it. The Director and Security watched me the whole time and then walked me out.

I think they were playing a game with me. They initially told me the package was a done deal, all the approvals were done, and it could not be undone. Then they told me no-deal, you are on your own, forget it. Almost like they wanted me to get frustrated and quit on my own so they could get a freebie on me. So when I didn't leave they probably thought damn, our goals will not be met, get rid of him.
