Do You Plan to Work in Retirement (graphic)

54% say they will continue to work but an additional 27% are not sure. My suspicion is many (not necessarily all) of the 27% don't have a clue/plan about what they will need to retire if they are not sure. That has the potential to boost the number working past retirement age to as high as 81%. This would have included me if I hadn't listened to my Dad when I was younger. Thanks Dad.

Cheers!

I ended up working an extra 6 months past when I could have first taken retirement. As a full time employee with benefits, I earned at least the equivalent of 4 years working as a 1/2 time employee with no benefits. Now, my time is mine to use as I wish.

If you make a commitment to do something at a certain time of the day and people are depending on your execution, are you working? You are not employed, but you are committed. Is that retirement? Who knows. But I will be doing something on that order, if/when I actually quit the megacorp.

I will be doing some sort of pro bono engineering work with expenses covered. For example strongly considering Peace Corps, Engineers Without Borders or equivalent organization. Either that or continue to tutor/teach math/physics to inner city kids, or both. I tutor high school kids now and it is a real blast. They are so funny when they find out that the old man from the affluent suburb is on their side. I have about 20 young people who are in or graduated from engineering schools so far. I get an escort from my car to the teaching site and back and I have the sense that folks are watching my car so that it there when I get back. Not unlike working with the Mountanyards back years ago.

My new definition of being retired is...

Before...
Working 40 hrs
Commute and lunches 20+ hrs
Doing laundry

Now...
Working 20 hrs
No commute
No laundry (service is too cheap)
Keeping DW happy by having a small "living wage" coming in...On a beach in the Caribbean
I net back 40+hrs / week to me...

Wallah! Retired!

Yes - so far options are:

Helper at cattle ranch
Assistant brewer at microbrewery
Help people find their seats, etc at white sox spring training
Volunteer at local historical society

But I'm waiting to see if something more fun is out there
