I got some of these cable ties when I bought some cables:

I figured someone just made an stupid mistake when designing them. Then today I saw the same arrangement in a tie from another company.

So maybe I just don't understand how to use one of these. They work fine, but what's with the hole and the narrow part? At least the hole should be on the other end. Putting the narrow part into the hole serves no purpose.

This, I can understand:

The small tab and hole secure the tie to one cable. This keeps the tie attached to one cable when you uncoil the cables.

After you make the coil, you wrap the large tail around all of the cables to secure the bundle.

Ah. Thanks.

I've totally switched from the velcro type cable ties to the rubber twist type.

With the rubber twist type, there's no self loosening that happens with the velcros.
