Permanent Denture

Costs really vary widely. I paid 33k for 4 implants to hold in a permanent denture for the bottom in NV. for the tops I went to KS and got 6 implants that will hold in a removable denture for 11k. I also incurred flight costs although 2 of my 3 sons live there so I have a free place to stay. I would still go visit the kids but not as much as I have been going lately.

Yes, the costs can be higher or lower... my DW had jaw issues and had to have bone grafting done on all of hers.... we went to a specialist that teaches how to do it... so we do pay extra for ours... however, my BIL had some done and they were not done right... had to go to someone else to get them removed and new ones put in.... not something I would suggest...

I figured it was time for an update. Went to KS 2 weeks ago for a 2 hour surgery to have the gums cut open and the hooks installed in the implants. Then they alter your denture by cutting off the part covering the roof of your mouth and put o rings on to snap the denture in and out. I did not feel well for about 3 days afterwards. Well today my gum was raw in a spot that was rubbing so went in to have it filed down and my gums were all swollen and one implant was bleeding. When she took an x-ray she said it looks like that implant is failing. In KS when the dentist opened my 6 implants 2 had failed. Now my dentist said if I am able to keep 2 I should be fine. She prescribed a mouth wash that is an antibiotic. The first time I went to KS he prescribed an antibiotic after the surgery but did not the 2nd time and I am wondering if this is the problem. Anyways I am bummed but hopeful that it will still work out. Needless to say that if they all fail I will just go back to wearing a denture. Oddly enough once he put the implants in the first time and sewed over them my denture fit perfect without paste. I guess my gums had more substance. I considered never going back for the final part because it fit so well but then decided that was stupid and that it would be nice to have a denture with no palate and that would snap in. It has been sturdy which is nice. I am not sorry I tried for the price. My insurance paid 3k (split over 2 insurance years) and I paid 8k. I don't count the flights as I saw my boys although I would not have went 4 times in 8 months.

Ouch! It seems like there is no end to this. I hope whatever you end up with works out. I'm at $35 K OOP and have two implants to go and one partial plate. I've had over 20 crowns, two root canals, one new post and all that went well (nothing has failed). Boy, I am going to have one heck of a medical deduction this coming tax return.:D

DW had open heart surgery this last week to replace a leaking Mitral valve. The dog is the only one who is not having some procedure around here.

I so hope that your wife is fine. Mine definitely minor compared to that. When I had my teeth I was doing expensive work every year but luckily did not keep track or I would be crying:))

Wife is recovering, thanks! But has a long way to go.

My dental work is a collection of military work and some private work when my face met a windshield many years ago. All the work is coming apart so it's like rebuilding a crumbling house. LOL

I had a crown sheer off at the gum and an oral surgeon removed the rest and did a bone graft in preparation for a single implant--$850 To insert the implant will be $2250. I go back 6 months later to have the abutment screwed in--$850. Then my regular dentist does a crown--$850. Total price for one implant is $4800.

Budapest has a huge medical tourism business where I could save substantially even after paying for 2 round trip flights over there. I can get the work done in Mexico for $1200 and flights out there are only $200 round trip times two.

Our local oral surgeons are all Vandy Med School graduates and they have huge overhead. Their full head CAT scan machine was about $400k according to my dentist. I am in a dilemma and self conscious about missing a tooth.

Well, I used to think I missed the boat being an engineer with an MBA and should have been a veterinarian, but now I think I really should have been a dental surgeon. However, it's too late for another career.

So I'll just stay being and invisible old slug with a mouthful of expensive dental work.:D

Permanent denture

It totally failed.

Specialist here said I did not have enough bone for the short implants they used. I needed a sinus lift to have longer implants. I did not have mini implants but regular but they come in different sizes. Thankfully my bottom ones are fine but they cost 3 times the cost of the upper.

I had a tooth shear off at the gum. Oral surgeon charged $895 to remove the tooth and prep it for an implant with a graft.
He charges $2250 for the implant and another $850 for the screw in abutment 4 months later. Then my regular dentist installs a crown for $850. It all adds up quickly for just one simple implant.

I ended up going to another state to a dentist for the implant. After getting numbed up, the implant was installed in six to seven minutes with absolutely no pain. It was easier than getting a filling.

The money my oral surgeon charges is absolutely ridiculous. And implants are simply a racket for the dentist's time spent. My implant was $900, and that enough.

For those getting more complicated implant orocedures, leaving the U.S. is an alternative. The problem with Mexico is you never know qualified the dentists are. But other cities like Budapest have a couple of hundred dentists with a big medical tourism business--mostly from the U.K. flying in on budget airlines.

A implant specialist here wants to remove the implants, do a complete upper bone graft and then a denture. No thanks to a ton more pain and money spent. When the last 2 abutments fall out the gum will just heal over the implants and I will get denture.

So sorry to hear this, Teacher Terry. Just curious - what happens when it fails? Does the implant become loose and unstable? Does the tooth break off? I received my first implant earlier this year so just wondering what to look out for. I wish you the best.

Yes, please explain the failure in detail, if you may (or can).

I am on the fence between getting a sinus lift for two missing upper teeth followed by implants. I'm not sure I want to go through two more surgeries followed by implants and new teeth for those two ($12,000?) or just get a partial and see how I like it ($2000).

Then again, I remember throwing away an old partial for those teeth 25 years ago. Maybe they make them better now??

The implants have more than one part. The implants are buried beneath the gums. After they heal for 4 months and attach to the bone they open the gums up underneath the implant and screw in a abutment. When I had teeth I had a partial and it worked well. My surgeries have been very painful but remember I had my whole top did in one and the bottom in another. I basically spent a week or 2 in bed after each one and my face swelled so bad I was unrecognizable. The day after the surgery the doctor wanted to see me and when the assistant saw me she stepped back , gasped and grasped her chest. She didn’t recognize me.

A X-ray showed they are failing. Only 2 of my abutments will stay in out of 6 because the implants failed. The post part doesn’t fall out.

My DW is going through her 3rd group of implants and is hoping to get the final stuff done in the next few months... this last one is about to go onto its 3rd year...

BUT, on her second set she had 4 teeth removed and insisted on having a partial made so nobody could see her missing teeth.... cost between $1,000 to $1,200... she wore it maybe 20 minutes total!!! She loves her implants but could not stand the partial... and it was designed for looks so she would have had to remove it to eat... BIG waste of money...

Somehow, I still have visions of throwing the old partial plate away 25 years ago. It was designed to be "useful", but over the years I wore it, the thing got loose, etc and adjustments were not helpful. Maybe long ago the techniques were not that good?

I don't look forward to the sinus lift and adding bone material process of surgery and waiting 6 months to see if it was good. Then the implant process of drilling and threading in a sleeve to hold the post. Another costly surgery.

I have two implants on the lower jaw that did not require the bone graft material and they are fine. After hearing about failures (TT above), I am less inclined to go for implants and may just go get the new partial plate.

I had a bridge and not sure what the differences are between the 2. It was permanent, felt like my own teeth and could eat just fine. For my bottom teeth I was so out of it slept for most of the surgery. For top teeth they just froze me and had terrible headache from all the drilling and pounding. Couldn’t pay me to repeat either experience.

My sister just had a bone graft and said it was very painful for about a week. Luckily she had pain pills left over from a surgery .

Friend of mine is having that done at the local medical/dental unoversity. It does not look like fun and being a school setting it’s taking forever. She has her upper dentures in at least.
However, total cost including dentures $1400! I think that is worth the inconvenience if you can find a school like that

thanks! I would never recommend this unless you are totally out of options like I was. However, it sure beats having to wear dentures for life which is horrible.

i had debentures put in ( originally they were going to save 4 teeth so i Coca-Colaed them ) when i was 21 .

sure dentures have some downsides ( like remembering to remove them before you are about to be sick )

but am on my third set ( broken denture teeth don't hurt half as much on impact )

all in all it might have been the only sensible ( carefully considered ) decision i made in my 20s .

i WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE only the very brave to have it done by dental students in training ( nervousness is contagious )... but but , it all worked out in the end

You Aussies sure do some strange things with the Queen's English.

LOL , sorry the meds are causing complications today

and trying to focus on some share trading isn't helping ( while researching the complications )

cheers !!

Has anyone tried the Clear Choice route that is advertised all over TV ?
