Free download of Turbotax Basic

You have to give your email address to do the download. Never mind.

Is this tax program tailered only for U.S. residence?

EDIT:

REWahoo, I tried to send you an email and was surprised the link sent me to a porn site. Is that you on the left? What the heck!!!!!!!!!

I just gave them REW's e-mail address...

But I don't know REW's email address. :(

Here ya go: REWahoo@Yahoo.mom
If I'm unwilling to give them my own email address I wouldn't give them yours. That would be so mean of me! They would probably spam you forever and a day. Oh well, I guess I will just keep doing my taxes with a pencil and paper and a calculator like I always have.

I got a notice from the IRS a little while ago. They are no longer going to mail out the 1040 forms automatically in January. I will have to get them at the library or the post office or download them from irs.gov. I guess this computerized tax filing is really catching on.

I've used them for the past few years and I don't get a "lot" of spam e-mails. As I recall, they send out two or three notices around tax time; that's about it. I haven't visited the link the OP provided. Is it a free download, but you pay to e-file?

I was on the yearly subscription plan, having Turbotax Deluxe mailed to me each year around the Holidays. But I cancelled last year (going to get mine through Vanguard this year).

I'm in no rush though as my rule of thumb is to not start doing my taxes until after the superbowl.

Feel free to give my "dot mom" email address to whomever you like.

Looks like both are free.

FYI, the link takes you to the default TurboTax website. There you are offered a number of options, including a free download. You 'purchase' TT basic, the charge is $0.00, no CC info is asked for, only your name, address, email and phone #. Whether or not you choose to give accurate information is entirely optional. :)

Thanks for the heads-up REW. I have downloaded my copy.

I find having the program in December is handy for determining a number of end-of year tax issues.

Good point. My reason for waiting until after to Superbowl is I used to file in January to get it out of the way. But one year, I did that and forgot a couple of 1099's so had to do an amended return

Looks like a good deal. Has anyone out there used TurboTax Basic who owns rental property?

No, but if you click on the "compare products" button on the linked TT site, it indicates you need the 'Premier' or 'Home & Business' versions if you have rental property - neither of which are free of course.

That's why I downloaded it-- to play with this weekend while we're staying hunkered down from Black Friday.

*Groan* Oboy, another Roth IRA conversion estimate!

i used it last year for the 1st time, do i have to download it this year? perhaps tax tables are in it? i kinda thought i could just go to the website and start w/o any need to do anything.

You need the latest version every year if you are going to download and install it on your PC. As well as tax law changes and tax table updates the user interface often changes.

Last year they had free e-file with this version of TurboTax...

It is a chance for them to up-sell and steal market share from Taxcut.

edit: (just installed.. this year's version has free e-file as well)

Never used it for rentals but typically the more advanced versions of Turbo Tax will walk you through the topic, ask questions, and 'hold your hand' as you fill in the necessary forms. The basic version will likely only do that for the most standard topics so you may have to do it manually. TurboTax does recommend using their Premier version for rental property.

You can also get TurboTax Basic from Vanguard for free if you have enough assets wtih them. I've done it several years lately, including free efile.

I'll qualify for this freebie next tax year. :)

Same here otherwise need to play with spreadsheet, I need to convert to roth and need accurate estimate to avoid recharacterization. Need to take advantage of 0-10% tax bracket.

I guess one can also get taxact for free, looks like now for 2010.
