Not me! I never once "sat outside on the front porch". We have a name for people that do that, here, and I'll leave it at that.

In my case, when going without AC, I like to be discreetly inside in the shade, dressed in nearly nothing, and sipping a cool beverage with a couple of electric fans providing all the breeze and air exchange that I want. It's really not uncomfortable at all.

she lived with her son who was a raging alcoholic - I'm not sure they had fans inside the house. He died about a year after she did around 1993. Poor lady.

Oh, OK, I see - - here they give fans away free to the poor and elderly who can't otherwise afford them, but that is probably just a local thing. Poor lady! Living with an alcoholic can be dreadful, heat or not. And no wonder you think AC is a necessity.

W2R - you ARE a tough cookie. I've been spoiled, growing up in San Diego where the temps are moderate and the humidity is relatively low. Only about 5 houses on my street (of about 40 houses) have AC. We do have a whole house attic fan, though... which helps.

When I lived in Philadelphia I got to learn about heat/humidity combination. My circa 1910 twin home had no central air. I had a small window unit for the bedroom, and ceiling fans. If it got too hot, I'd move the small tv down to the basement - which stayed sub 70 year round. I suspect that's what folks did in the old days, pre AC, also. DH grew up in Philly with no AC. You can do it... lots of folks do...
