The cheapest thing you have ever done.... come on now, admit it.

I am glad I am all done with that business!

About 20-25 years ago our local Woolworths went out of business and had a huge sale. I worked only a couple of buildings down so I would periodically go in to see what the markdowns were. They finally marked down the feminine hygiene products by about 75%. I bought an entire cart full of tampons, all that remained in the store. The low price outweighed the feeling of embarrassment.

Pun intended? :p

Aren't threads supposed to drift towards politics and sex instead of casinos and menstruation?

Here, politics and casinos are inextricably linked. You mean they aren't elsewhere? :2funny:

As for sex and menstruation, this is a good time to use this handy little emoticon. :-X

Also, this IS the "cheapest thing you've ever done" thread. Being cheap isn't usually associated with either politics or sex.

In fact, many could argue there's a hugely inverse relationship. :)

But just think - - the average young lady doesn't have to pay a single cent for the privilege of menstruating. All that fun for free!

I considered the Bellagio to be more upscale (just purely from the feel I get from looking at the place...not to mention that virtually every website I look at indicates substantially higher prices for rooms there, as well). That, and the strawberry daquiri seemed to be the real thing....the version at the Luxor - while respectable for being free - wasn't anything near the version from the Bellagio.

But, don't take my word for it. In the pursuit of fairness, one would surely need a wide sampling pool from a variety of drinks to figure out which casino is truly better. :D (where's the drunk emoticon when you need it? :)
i agree. the sample size (# of casinos visited) must be large enough to get good statistical representation. Urp! :D

$2 Reading Glasses

I don't know whether to post this here or in the discussion on correcting near vision. I wear a single contact lens currently and use one eye for distance vision and one for close vision, but in the last few years I have had trouble reading smaller font - like directions on a bottle.

I have found the dollar store reading glasses to be helpful with my contact lens, but of course both eyeglass lenses are the same prescription. Today at the dollar store I bought two pair of reading glasses with the right correction for each eye and popped out the lenses to make a single pair that is just right.

Astute readers will note that the second pair has exactly the wrong prescription in each eye. This pair can be worn upside down. :D

hmm .. TWO pairs of glasses sounds like a splurge to me!

I noticed something I started doing unconsciously: used to be when it was time for dinner and I planned to use some froz. veg. I had, I'd just boil the water, take out the froz. veg., and drop it in. NOW I have started to instinctively take the froz. veg. out earlier in the day and put on the counter or in the fridge, depending on how early I take it out. Why, I've probably saved thirty-four cents in LPG this year already!!

To save money on entertainment, I read this forum. Can anyone here beat that? That is an ultimate frugality for you. >:D>:D>:D

I did the same thing with replacement razor blades when the local k-mart store closed about 10 yrs ago. They had been marked down 75% as well so a 4 pack cost less than a dollar. They lasted about 8 years...

Good thing you didn't have early menopause!

YEARS ago (6? 8?) there was an early version of a dollar store in town, now long out of business (10?). Anyway, they had a bin full of Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars - many in my size - for $6/pair. I bought a dozen pair - hi-tops, low-tops, solid colors, lime green, orange, plaids, mostly weird unsaleable colors and designs, including, i kid you not, red patent leather (early adopter of Pope-peds here). Ok, I've only worn the red leather ones a couple Halloweens, but the others have made it many a year - currently wearing reddish plaid hi-tops and have loden green lowtops sitting next to my Keens for slightly more formal wear.

Guess we'll have to call you by your new user name:

I try to take them out of the freezer, and put them in the fridge a day before. The frozen stuff gives up its 'coldness' to the fridge, which theoretically will be running a little less.

Yeah, I can't imagine it saves more than a few pennies, but there 's no harm done, and it does make me feel better.

I hope you're accounting for the fact that if you're in the heating season, that your furnace had to warm the air and counter to compensate for the defrosting!

Oh, man - I wish I had done this when Easy Spirit stopped making their run/walk shoes in my size.

And even if I wanted to get the next size down, they have lowered the CQ (cushiony quotient) and they are just not good anymore.

Hey, I helped put that company on the map - and they abandoned me and my feet!

My MIL never bought wax paper; she just reused the wax paper in cereal boxes.

Needed to pick-up a couple fishing poles for the kids fishing derby tomorrow (good ones are at the lake). So DW is volunteering at the school (where the kids are) 1/4 mile away. Rather than drive the gas guzzeling SUV, I walk 1/4 mile, grab DW car (with the spare keys) and run the errand and repark the car. Walk home.

I see potential for a new product.

"This year's must-have gift for the cost-conscious traveller, the Ronco In-Tube-ator. Now you can quickly refill those convenient travel-size tubes with toothpaste purchased in the economical large sizes. Simply screw the male ends of both tubes into the In-Tube-ater and transfere the valuable paste. Order now and you'll also get our Blade-Alive disposable razor blade sharpener. Don't throw those blades away!"

(discussion of "screwing," and anotomical inuendo concerning "male," and "female" components might make this ad most appropriate for late-night cable)

So this got me thinking ....
If I save one cap from each of two old tubes (yes, I will have to buy one more minitube to make this work), I can cut off the "top" of each cap, leaving just the threaded portion. Then, I can glue them together with a little plastic cement (or, wrap with some cut-down duct tape to maintain the appropriate "look" for this project) thereby making my own In-Tube-ater.

wow ... that's [-]tight[/-] good.

Yeah, the wax paper is definitely in the top ten.

CFB, yeah in winter it is a trade-off. I always wondered why they didn't build refrigerators into the sides of buildings to take advantage of the cold outside air for 1/2 the year. Either you'd have a summer fridge and a winter fridge, or there'd be some way of insulating it from the heat in summer. Or, better yet, there could be a system of cold-air exchange pipes with the outside that you'd close off in summer. Why spend energy to make stuff cold in your 68° house when the outside is freezing?
