Class of 2013

I am on call this week for the last time ever  I know I will have to work this weekend, but I do hope the on call Gods take pity on me during the wee hours of the night.

Five more weeks to go.

Wishing you peaceful slumbers. My last call is next Wednesday. Last office day the following Friday. Good luck!

Well I was signed up for ER Class of 2014, but recent events will have me putting in my last work day on 04 Oct 13 and taking leave all the way up until I officially separate from my employer on 10 Feb 14. Does that count as ER Class of 2013? If so, sign me up, age 45.

I'd say you qualify. Congrats!

Absolutely. Retirement means not working. If you can still manage to get paid, that's just gravy.

That's what DH says too. He stopped working in Dec 2012, but they keep sending him paychecks. Ask him if he retired in 2012 and he will assure you he did. :D

Also, I see lots of more retirees in Mar and April. Congrats everyone - feels great, doesn't it?!

I have been out about 3 weeks now. We are on the road (in our new fifth wheel) and it is wonderful - everything I hoped it would be. Not having the Sunday night blues (in fact not really ever knowing or caring what day of the week it is) is possibly the best feeling in the world.

+1 on the Sunday blues. In my 2nd week of ER and have loved it although I wish my DW would stop filling up my new schedule

DW Class of 2012

I am now 75% certain I will retire 12/30/13 instead of June 2014 for several reasons. I won't be appreciatively richer by June and my bs bucket is starting to tip and drip. I'll have a decent pension with 2% COLA and paid medical and an emergency fund. I've been home I'll for two weeks and I saw how much I dread going back to w*rk tomorrow. By the end of 2013 I'll take home 70% of my salary forever. I won't be rich but I won't be poor and I'll enjoy my own free time.

Sunday blues are the worst! I love Fridays and Saturdays because I can stay up late reading. The thought of reading every night to whatever time sounds like heaven!

Almost 3 months past the date when I reached retirement eligibility. I'm gettin' closer every day.... Now, it's not when I CAN, it's when I WANT to.

Congrats!!!!

Count me in for the class of 2013. I am currently on an extended leave to "try out" ER before returning to w*rk next month for another few months to help out on a project, but I've already told my company that as soon as my assignment is done, I'm outta there.

The other day I went to the doctor's office for a routine examination, and a nurse asked me, "Are you taking the day off from work?" I told her that I am trying out early retirement, and soon will be taking the rest of my life off :D

I have received the "All Systems are Go" words from all significant others, and most importantly my DW :). The only thing between me and ER is picking the date, which is mostly dependent on several loose ends to take care of, like signing the papers, roll-over decisions, etc. I added my name to Class of 2013!! Great feeling....thanks for all here that contributed their advice, knowledge, and encouragement!!

One of the somewhat nerve-wracking things early on in retirement is watching your income and outgo and trying to keep the latter from regularly exceeding the former by more than your retirement budgeting allows. I suspect it will take us a few months to see how we are doing in that regard on a regular basis. There is some adjustment to be made, as the slack in our budget for "impulse buys" is pretty much entirely gone. That's not to say there's no discretionary budget for us, but we (a) try to stay within it (about $200 a month for each of us in the current plan) and (b) have to avoid spending just because we "can afford it" (i.e. have already contributed as much to savings/investing as our plan called for).

FIRECalc tells us we have 100% success if we stay the course, but that depends on my wife still having a job in her new ministry career at least until I reach age 62. (She thinks she wants to do it for about 15-20 years.) I'm **trying** not to tap the IRA through SEPP if I can avoid it. At some point I may have to or else earn a little supplemental income myself until 2025, the year I will turn 59 1/2.

Here's our scorecard:

Ages: Me 47, DW 44 (will be 45 in June)

Expected income need: $45K per year

DW's ministry income: $32K per year (also includes housing and paid utilities above and beyond salary)

Income shortfall: $13K per year (my goal, though, is to keep "negative cash flow" under $800 per month)

401K and Traditional IRA balance: $630K
Roth IRA balances: $155K
HSA balance: $26K
Taxable investment balances: $28K
Savings and liquid cash equivalents: $145K

This does not include the value of the house we own outright and plan to put on the market soon; conservatively I think we'll clear at least $60K from it. I plan to put that away and invest it with a moderate level of risk toward our housing needs once DW retires, in which case we either need to buy a new home or pay rent.

At some point I may go back to earning a little bit of income if I choose to do it, but in reality I have no desire to ever consider anything full-time or too stressful. And we're fortunate enough that our situation doesn't require me to take anything out of desperation. I'll "never say never" about earning a wage again, but it will only be if it's right. That probably means it will never happen, because there are few jobs that would give me the working conditions I'd require to go back.

As for health insurance, Megacorp paid it through the end of April 2013, and we have a short term policy with Blue Cross for $320/mo until January 2014, at which time we'll likely be participating in the exchange without concern over developing a medical condition that disqualifies us from coverage. At our income level starting in 2014, health insurance won't look like a budget-buster (we hope).

I will have a "First Megacorp" pension of about $7500 per year starting in 2030, not adjusted for inflation.

FIRECalc likes our chances a lot. We shall see. I leave it up to investment returns and inflation. :)

Hang tight Ziggy. I'm sure it will work out. If you're going to go broke you'll have plenty of notice to make the necessary adjustments. I use $300 / month / person for spending cash but mine includes gasoline.
